Notes/Commercial Description:
The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma.

Clear copper pour with nice head and decent lacing. Perfumy, floral nose with hints of toffee malt. The taste is very subdued, even for a pale ale. Malt dominates with an odd squash aftertaste that slowly fades. Reminiscent of a British IPA. The aftertaste hurts the drinkability for me. An average at best pale ale.

Poured from a bottle into an adnams ghost ship pint glass.

Thick head with good lacing.

Smell: Big hop bang followed by a spicyness

Taste: hop bang just like the smell. Bitter and piney. The pinyness fades after a while and leads to citrus spicyness.

Mouthfeel: smooth and cold even when it's not, which is strange!

A beer for all year round. I feel it would go down great with a summer BBQ

A- Pours a rich golden in color with a creamy, slightly tan head. Head retention is very good and subsequently, so is the lacing. Really a beautiful looking pour.

S- Starts off with a fairly strong hop bang. The hops aren't to the level of an American IPA style, but still prominent and fairly bitter. Hop character is mostly spicy and a little floral. Small malt backbone is detectable underneath the hops bitterness.

T- Starts with a moderate to almost strong hops bitterness bang, just like the scent. Hops bitterness is surprisingly more piney than floral, but the spiciness is still there. Not much malt is detectable in the taste like it was in the scent. Moderately strong lingering bitterness sticks around on the tongue.

M- This one pretty much feels like a classic English pale, except a little more carbonated than usual. Moderately smooth and fairly easy drinking, yet still packs a bit of a hop punch.

Overall, this is just a solid flagship beer for a pretty awesome brewery. Nothing groundbreaking as far as an English pale goes, but still nothing wrong with this beer.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Nice dark golden color with nice clarity to it, glows a lithe lighter when held up to the light. Nice white cap with really good lacing to it. Good looking beer.

Slight citrus hop spiciness coming through in the initial aromas. Very bready, like warm buttered biscuits, probably some roasted pale malts.

Taste is on par with the smell. Very bready, liked buttered home made bread that's a little well done around the crust. Primarily spicy hops come through here, but it's all pretty mild hop profile.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, a light medium with a nice balance. Good sweetness with only a touch of bitterness blended in with medium carbonation level. Buttery/oily feel that has a spicy dry finish. Really nice drinkable anytime brew. Safe beer to have lying around for anyone. Thanks Geoff for sending it!
