Odell has a solid pale ale in their "5-Barrel" recipe, though perhaps it's a bit confused between the English and American styles. The flavor is bright, citrusy, and interesting in its interplay of hops and malt. While tasty, it's perhaps too hoppy for an English Pale Ale, and could actually use more balance or different hop properties (though for an American Pale Ale, it's right on target). Either way, if this were available near me, I'd probably have it with some regularity.
Pours a 2cm tall head of off-white foam, which has excellent retention and leaves substantial washes of lacing along the sides of the glass. Head eventually fades to a thin cap of foam atop the body of the beer. The body itself is an orange-brown color with hints of red and yellow. Light brings out yellow and orange hues to the overall presentation. Carbonation is visible, though not particularly active.
Aroma is noticeably hoppy, with bright floral and light grapefruit overtones; undertones of light honey and toasted malt.
Opens with toasted and slightly caramel-like malt flavors that quickly fade into a grapefruit-meets-orange flavor combination. Mid-palate finds mildly floral and citrusy (grapefruit, orange) hops together with a modest bitterness and modest toasted malt sweetness. Back of palate picks up increased bitterness, some herb-like greenness from the hops, and only slight sweetness from the malt. Aftertaste of lingering grapefruit and orange rind-like hops with modest bitterness and malt sweetness.
Beer is medium bodied, with medium levels of carbonation that foam the beer slightly across the palate. The result is a generally smooth, easy-drinking pale ale that finishes quite dry and astringent.
