Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Todd on 03-09-2005

The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma.

Appearance: Slightly hazy copper color with a one finger off-white soapy head.

Aroma: Lots of bready malt in the nose. Just a touch of some sweet hops.

Taste: The breadyness from the aroma is present in the taste but balanced nicely by a bittersweet hop flavor. Mild sweetness on the palate with a little bitterness on the finish. A little juicy but not as much as their IPA. There's enough flavor here to make is sessionable at 5.2% abv.

Mouthfeel: There's good carbonation but it feels so smooth that it almost goes unnoticed. On the lighter side of medium bodied. Actually feels thicker than it is but has high drinkability.

Final Thoughts: Odell Brewing does it again; their 5 Barrel Pale Ale rings true to the style while offering a taste and feel that makes it unique. This is one of the smoothest APAs I've had and definitely worth seeking out. I could see this beer being enjoyed by curious macro-drinkers and it even pleases a hop head like myself.
