I have been drinking this one from a six pack and it is only barely ok, maybe skunked a little or not as fresh as it should be.
Anyway on tap in Fort Collins saved this day.
this ipa is a nice light amber with light lacing and a sheet of barely off-white head that stays the whole way down.
the smell tells very well of the taste with citrusy to pin hops, like if clementines could grow on a baby pine tree. all around the sides of this dainty tree is light caramel malt to keep the tree standing and on balance. there is just a hint of alcohol in the smell, which is not a bad thing with 7%abv

similar the taste is big rather full with these hops caramel malt. the carbonation is just right to make it crisp clean and with a bit of silk.

way too drinkable for the quality of taste and abv. MUCH better on tap, all afternoon drinkable. (837 characters)

A: Beautiful golden pour completely translusent
with lazy but visible carbonation. There is a
scant head with little to no lacing.

S: Nice citrus nose

T: Fruit juicy but also fruit juicy slick.
There is a bitterness at the swallow but
not so strong and unfortunately lingering.

M: This IPA is slick on the pallet going down, a
little too sticky.

D: Not sturdy enough for me, just better than
your average IPA. A beautiful beer. (441 characters)

Received in a trade with Tolann - thank you so much!
I could sit and write about this beer for some time, but I gotta keep it brief tonight. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Big seafoam creme head, topping at almost 2 fingers and loitering for an eternity. Whence finally gone, left in its path is the dankest web of sticky lacing this side of Ft. Collins. Slight haze in the body, bright honey orange. The archetypal IPA.

Dreamy nose, so well done. Brilliant notes of mango and grapefruit. Alive, ripe and in your face. Picking up only a touch of grass and grain. One of the better IPA's I've had the pleasure of smelling. Taste is quite a feat as well, lemony and citric, a bounty of fruity hop qualities cover the tongue. Light to medium in body, but obtaining a fair amount of resiny oily slickness that pools and makes my mouth water. In the midst of this, there is a full, creamy yeastiness, and just enough pale malt to be detectable. Finishes full and sweet, which at times is overwhelming, but usually very enjoyable.

A very well crafted IPA, a very fine example of the modern style. (1,095 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear bright orange, just barely tinted red. Two and a half fingers of dense, rocky, creamy, sticky white head, with plenty of big, thick bubbles. Beautiful. Great sticky lacing, with chunks of creamy, rocky head floating on the surface.

Nose is freshly zested grapefruit alongside grapefruit juice. Juicy and mouth-watering. As I revisit the nose after a few sips, the citrus comes across more as orange than grapefruit; sweet more than bitter.

Bitter grapefruity citrus flavor, yielding quickly to mere hop bitterness. Second sip brings out a more fresh-squeezed orange juice flavor, with accompanying bitterness from pulp. As I get more into the glass, pine hops show up to the party, and after a few more sips some faint floral qualities push through. Really seems to run the gamut. Another sweet upturn toward the bottom of the glass. Short, quick finish.

Medium to light body, and a little thin. Drinkability is helped in part by the thinness of the body; goes down easily, despite bitterness. Overall a fantastic IPA, and now sits at the top of my favorites list. (1,123 characters)

Reviewed 5/27/09

Poured into a tulip. Rocky, 1.5 finger white head that provided good lacing. Golden, semi-hazy body.

Smell was citrusy, floral and piney. Good amount of grapefruit as well. Subtle malt profile. A fantastic smelling IPA.

Taste had lots of tart grapefruit bitterness. Slightly piney and resinous. Good citrusy flavors, mild malt sweetness to provide enough backbone to make this one not overly bitter.

Mouthfeel had a light/medium body with good carbonation.

Drinkability was good as well. Good bitterness with a subtle sweetness hides the 7% very well. Doesnt leave any harsh lingering bitterness.

Overall this is a very good IPA. Good, mild, bitterness and great hop flavor and aroma while still being sweet enough to enjoy these back to back. (766 characters)

12oz. Poured a pale copper color with impeccable clarity and a thick, frothy white head that left some decent lacing on the glass. Clarity was just amazing to look at. Juicy, fruity aroma fills the nose with scents of orange and grapefruit rind along with some floral aspects. Smells fresh and sweet. Mouth-feel is also juicy but is light to medium bodied with balanced carbonation. Tastes are fresh grapefruit and orange with notes of pineapple and lemon. Nice biscuity malt backbone keeps everything in balance with a not too bitter hop finish. Very sound American IPA - wouldn't change a thing with this ale that represents the style well; it also does well at keeping its uniqueness. (687 characters)

A - Clear golden with a slight orange hue. Pours with a nice creamy, white one finger head. Nice lacing and a tons of carbonation rising within the glass.

S - Very floral with nice tones of tropical fruit and some citrus coming through. A little bit of pineyness detected in the background as well.

T - Nice, hoppy floral flavor with some of the pine and citrus fruitiness followed by the lightly sweet maltiness with tones of caramel and a kind of earthy flavor. Fairly bitter on the aftertaste, but balances perfectly with the floral notes that stick around as well.

M - Doesn't feel at all as overly carbonated as it looks. Great medium to light body that is very refreshing.

D - Extremely drinkable for a 7% abv brew. Very well balanced and extremely refreshing. Up there with the best IPAs I've tried. (812 characters)

A - Golden orange and very clear. Big foamy head with excellent retention and good lacing. Rather active carbonation bubbles quickly rising to the top.

S - Big fruity nose with lots of grapefruit, orange and even some tropical aromas mixed in. A little pineapple and mango perhaps?

T - Light sweetness with lots of citrusy bitterness up front. Big tastes of graprefruit. A light matly backbone emerges as the drink warms and provides a little hint of biscuity sweetness.

M/D - Medium bodied with a crisp finish. Hop resins linger in the mouth long after the drink is gone. Alcohol is there, but not strong. (609 characters)

thanks to cosmohophead for this extra

pours a clear gold with a 2 finger head that coats the glass with lacing

smells of tangy grapefruit and tropical hops

taste just like the smell but i pick up some pine hops first along with citris grapefruit and tropical hops. this beer reminds me alot of founders double trouble meets a lighter avery maharaja.

mouthfeel - not as crisp and light as double trouble - this beer coats your mouth and the aftertaste of fruit hops linger

drinkabilty is very good but watch yourself it is 7%abv

overall another great beer from odell and an IPA do be tried by all - better then sculpin imo. (628 characters)

Well, I was very pleased to be able to enjoy several Odell Ipa's last night. The beer was better than my team's performance. Celts, Bruins & Sox all lose.

Excellent IPA.

Came with a finger plus of pillowy egg shell white head. This lasted a short time and faded back into the beer. The color was a bright orange/amber color with excellent clarity. Nice color for this beer, really bright. Excellent rings of lacing cling to the inside of the glass.

Aroma was wonderful, bright, fresh, fruity and big citrus. Lots of grapefruit notes. Very floral..

Wow, this is just a wonderful IPA. Despite the aggressive hop nature there is a great deal of balance here. The grapefruit notes continue, along with some other fruit notes. Nice malt tones that are just slightly sweet and a touch of light caramel. More of the flavor is bread like and specifically a crispy crusted bread. The lingering hop bitterness is just awesome and so damn fresh & perfume like.

Bright and refreshing mouth feel, medium bodied with an assertive carbonation level. Really makes the aroma and hop notes pop.

Wonderfully drinkable.

This is an excellent IPA and shoots to near the top of my IPA list.

I'll be back to have more of these the next time I'm in Colorado. (1,241 characters)

taste was a refreshing hop with pine and citrus character. a hint of malt brings the balance together well. also detect a slight creaminess in the flavor.

mouthfeel is creamy and refreshing. definetly a drinkable beer. (402 characters)

A: Three finger head on initial pour. Light amber / golden-orange coloring. Very little cloudiness; clean and clear. Slight retention with just a bit of lacing. A very thin layer of froth persisted throughout the 12oz's.

S: Crisp, clean floral smell with traces of pine. Caramel sweetness comes through slightly with hints of fresh-baked bread.

T: Amazing. The best IPA I've found. A nicely complex flavor. The floral flavor hits you right away, bringing a good kick of hoppy-bitterness (with just a touch of pine). This is quickly masked by a bready, slightly sweet, caramel flavoring that is most evident upon swallowing. This overtakes the bitterness that lingers on through the complex aftertaste. This aftertaste consists of mostly pine and floral notes.

M: I could claim that this beer is overly carbonated, but I do that all the time. I think, for most, this beer has the perfect MF.

D: I drink these beers like they're 5%ABV. Good Lord, if there is a beer at 7%ABV that's more palatable than this, let me know . . . Like I said, amazing.

I love this IPA so much because of it's complexity. Unlike most IPA's that give you a taste of caramel malt followed by a crazy amount of bitterness, this beer initially hits you with a floral bitterness (preparing you for the ride), and only then follows suit with its sweet and then bitter profile. This beer is a roller-coaster ride, but one that is controlled and well maintained. Drink this! (1,448 characters)

Appearance - Golden with a thin head.

Smell - Big citrus (grapefruit) notes with sweetness lingering in the background.

Taste - Amazing balance of bitter citrus with sweet malt.

Mouthfeel - perfect

Drinkability - This is a great APA! Having never heard of the brewery before, I was extremely pleased with the purchase of a 6'er of Odell's IPA. If you enjoy mucho amounts of hops in your Pale Ales, Odell's is a must try. Great example of the style. (453 characters)

Opened 12 fl. oz. bottle, poured into Nonic pint glass.

Forms a ¼-½" head that holds for a bit atop a light amberish brew with nice bubbles.

Nice pine and citrus smell fill the nose; almost a Forrest floor smell. Taste follows through with slight hoppyness and refreshing pine & citrus notes.

Bubbles complement the experience and help provide a nice finish without that "oily" experience that many IPAs seem to provide.

Great brew. I'm enjoying this one with a nice Putanesca sauce. Complements it quite well. (517 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

A: A medium amber orange with a one finger off white head. Not a lot of lacing.

S: Earthy hops with a fairly faint malt sweet smell.

T: Hops bitterness at first with flavors of pine, earth and some slight citrus. The mid flavors are where the malt seems to come gushing out with flavors of sweet fruits, caramel and butterscotch. Finish is bitter with the hops lingering. Nicely balanced IPA, far from a west coast syle IMO. Nothing near Pliny the Elder as I read in another review, this carries way more malt.

M: Medium to full. Chunky and course, prickly and lingering bitterness. Slight alcohol warmth.

D: Fairly good, it was easy to drink and I could have had another.

Overall a solid IPA but not a superstar in my book. Glad I tried it. (796 characters)

Pours very nicely and with a good, sustained head with sticky lacing. Pure orangeish gold in color. Smells amazing, one of the best hop smells of any beer out there. Very Piney and fresh smelling with plenty of floral notes. Not exactly sure which hops they used, but you can tell Odell has good control over their hops. Taste is somewhat biscuity, with a sweet hop freshness. Again, more floral taste here. A little citrus, and it finishes only slightly bitter with a lingering hop aftertaste. Definately know you are drinking an IPA, but it isn't overwhelming. Mouthfeel and drinkability are good, and it goes down smooth without excessive bite. I'm not a huge hophead, but this is one of my favorate IPAs, and one that everyone should try. Definately Odell's best brew in my opinion. (786 characters)

Coming out of the bottle this looks like a clear egg yolk color, when held up to the light in my glass though it has a copper looking color with a one inch creamy looking head that stays on the edges of the beer. Lots of big bubbles stay a top of the beer with nice soapy lacing clinging to the glass.

Smells like ripe fruit. I always get that strong grapefruit smell, some honey, lemon, Pine, musky earth like smells(fresh dirt), wet hay. I always like the smell of IPAS.

Taste is a little less flavor full then the smell. I get mainly an upfront slightly bitter taste with some pine, honey, this evolves into some bread like malts and a semi-sweet finish.

Mouthfeel is a little on the bitter side(not extreme)with good amounts of carbonation. Like someone else said, leaves a crisp clean aftertase.

Reasonably price and good flavor makes this have good drink ability. (874 characters)

Hazy golden with a tinge of orange. Minimal white head.

Probably the best IPA I've ever smelled. Intense Floral hops, citrus and pine needles.

Well balanced. Hops are prevelant but not bitter. Really remarkable in its smoothness.

Great mouthfeel too. Chunky and full. To nitpick, I'd like to a see a little more carbonation.

Great beer. Probably my new favorite IPA. (370 characters)

I've had this before, but never in the capacity to rate it. Thanks to SupeWhite92 for reintroducing us, as well as saying hello to a bunch of beers I have yet to be formally acquainted with. :D

A big inch & a half of yellowed off-white froth develops over a clear, wheaty gold body. Lace is akin to a sticky DIPA: a.k.a., ugly & all over the place.

Aroma is so damn green with leaves & imaginary chunks of hop pellets grinding in between your fingers. (I actually drank Odell's new red a few days ago, & got the same intense hop aroma. Another bottle is in the queue for a review :o) Nothing else can make it through though. Not absurdly overpowering or sharp, but deep & rich in the perfume of pine & tangerine rind. Malt is apparently nonexistent. Not sure if I like that.

Feel is quite under-carbonated; slightly wheaty. Taste is much bitter-sweet tangerine rind, leafy greans, & lemon grass. Minoring slightly in sheet metal, the flavor thankfully has some notion in the back end of grainy malt & earth. It remains relatively juicy & sweet if you ignore everything else. It washes away pretty clean.

Too green to my liking, but it's what the people want, right? I remember this being a little more "dank" the last time I had it(a year+ ago). It's gotten better. Still not a hophead, but I can enjoy this. :) (1,315 characters)

A: 12 oz. brown bottle with a fantastic label. Deep golden body; slightly red in the center and pretty hazy. 3/4" cream colored head that leaves light lace stickage.

S: Infectious grapefruit and pine throughout, especially pine! Dare I say, Pliny the Elder-esque?!

T: Great Hop Flavor... Pine Resin! Pronounced orange peel character. A hop head's wet dream.

M: Medium-Full. The sappy hops reach every corner of the mouth.

D: Wonderful IPA... gone in a flash.

Notes: Like I said before, a lot of qualities that remind me of Pliny the Elder. I know my experience w/both is minimal, but I have to say I much prefer Odell to the more famous New Belgium as far as Ft. Collins breweries are concerned. (700 characters)

Poured into New Belgium Globe Glass

Pours a 1 finger pillow top head, slightly off white. Good retention and lacing. Color is a golden orange sunset.

Aroma is of honey and earthy, musky hops, and bready malts.

Taste is pretty good. Very hoppy. The hops are very earthy. Honey flavors and citrus notes are also present. Very zesty taste.

Mouthfeel is very bitter. It seems to be very cold on the mouth, but it was a good thing. It is as if you are drinking ice water on a 100 degree weather day. It leaves a very clean aftertaste for an IPA.

Overall, this is a solid IPA and I wish I would have gotten more of this. It has a great hop flavor and a very clean aftertaste. I definitely think it rates up to two-hearted. (723 characters)

Got a bottle as a "extra" in a trade with JMBSH, thanks!

A: Pours a cloudy orange with a decent head, nice lacing through the drink.

S: Smells great! Like hops and grapefruit, I thought of Blind Pig or PTE when I smelled this beer.

T: Taste is awesome, grapefruit hops and some malt are predominant with me and I love it.

M&D: This is almost a perfect IPA in my opinion, not overboard and not too weak. I went to throe the bottle in the recycle bin today and smell it and it still smelled of grapefruit. This was like a West Coast IPA but it's wasn't...I loved this beer. If I could get it here it would be my #1 go to beer!

A-Pours a hazy golden peach with a very small amount of head and lacing.

S-Wow! Lots of grapefruit hops with strong peach notes underneath. Awesome!

T-Not as good as the nose but still quite nice. Some malt sweetness in the front, grapefruit hoppy bitterness taking over in the middle and finishing a bit sweet with the hops.

M-Excellent. Medium bodied with excellent moderate carbonation, slightly resinous but still light.

D-Damn but I wish I had easy access to this beer, instead of the one beer that I got in trade. One of the most drinkable IPAs I have had. Ever.

Odell is always solid and this is a great IPA. Having it bottled is good but there is something a little extra on tap. Great hoppiness and a full body without a lingering after taste make this a top 10 beer, especially on the IPA list. A light fruity flavor adds to the complexity. (281 characters)
