Golden-orange, sunset sort of coloring.

Head is orange-tinted, small-bubbled, tight, and tall.

Lacing is firm and sticky, and there's quite a lot.

Aroma is very fruity, not just citric but tropical. There's a resinous edge, but more grapefruit than pine. Apricot and mango.

Smooth and easy up front, quite herbal and a little sweet. And then the hops really hit hard - sort of the middle-back of the flavor. Two tons of grapefruit come crashing down, along with orange and lemon zest. Shit-ton of hops. Great.

Malts are pale and caramel; sort of a sports bra to keep the hops from bouncing out of control.

Alcohol is present with a little prick at the finish, but nothing damning about that. Just a fact.

Finish is otherwise quite bitter, a bit dry, but very tasty.

Moderately full in the mouth - not overly chewy, but not as thin as a brew with this much in the hops department could be. Nicely carbonated.

Heavy handed hops are quite delicious but not for everyone. Unbalanced for sure. (1,005 characters)

Orange-honeyed color, lightly veiled. Quite good white foam.
In the smell a very fresh hop, with tangerine, and some piney. Sweet, fresh, good.
In the taste, after a honeyed and relatively sweet start, a quick following fresh hop, tangerine and pine. A perfect balance.
Same notes in the aftertaste, with sweet notes, honey and tangerine, and a plesant bitter grapefruit and resin finish.
Quite good body, long aftertaste.
One more, please! (440 characters)

Hooo Nelly.

Pours a beautiful pale crystal clear gold with a foamy, frothy, gooey sticky head that clings all the way down.

A very spicy, pine-tinged tangerine bomb. Hints of grapefruit and other citrus fruits.

Taste brings an explosion of juicy fruit to the citrus party. Rolls out with a clean background of... oh who am I kidding. There's no "malt" here. Awesome firm bitterness with just a hint of ragged edge that finishes clean and dry.

Medium bodied with little bits of alcohol warmth (particularly as the beer nears room temp.... if, uh, it sits out that long).

A member of my personal pantheon of IPAs as of now. Thanks, Odell. If you guys make no other good beers you've earned my eternal respect with this one. (727 characters)

I can't find this in Minnesota and pick some up every time I'm back in South Dakota.

A: This beer pours a light orange to yellow color. A soft, rocky white head sits on top. A beautiful lace follows down the sides as I enjoy.

S: The aromas in this beer are fabulous. Hops, hops, and more hops. First I get a nice piney aroma. This is followed by a bevy of citrus fruits. It finishes with a faint malt sweetness.

T: Homerun! The hops in this beer are perfectly showcased. First I get the subtle sweetness of the malts. This is followed by a rush of citrus fruits. Tangerines and grapefruits are obvious. This leads you into a solid bitterness that rounds out the drink and leaves you wanting more. Based on its appearance you would think the malts were going to be too few, but they really balance this beer out nicely.

M: The beer is a little bit lighter in mouthfeel on the spectrum of IPAs. It goes in crisp and has a dry finish. The carbonation is pretty adequate for this style. It would be perfect if the mouthfeel was a little heavier.

D: One of the best IPAs I've had. A perfect example of balancing malts and hops. The solid hop aromas make this beer that much more appetizing. I wish I could have at least 6 in my fridge all the time. A definite must try for any hop lover. (1,289 characters)

A - Slight hazy, amber to gold color. Good size, lacy, ivory colored head with good retention.

S - love the smell - very citrusy.

T - Citrusy hop character as well, not too malty sweet. Hops dominate. Nice bitterness that endures after drinking.

M - smooth with moderate viscosity.

D - This beer goes down smooth, but after a couple of them you know you've drank some beer, both from the "fullness factor" and the 7% ABV will sneak up on you.

Overall this is one of my go to's for American IPA. (499 characters)

Review from notes. Forgot to record the best by date, but it was a few months before the expiration.

Fair golden color, plenty of visible carbonation, chunky sheets of lacing, medium clarity - slightly hazy. Malty almost peanut butter smell, grassy and nondescript. Dry malty notes, mild grapefruit hop bitterness, nothing shocking. Even, creamy carbonation. This was more on the malty side, leading me to believe the hops had faded some. Pretty standard IPA. I'd try it again if I had a fresher bottle. Single from Lukas in Overland Park, KS. (545 characters)

Wow...the hop aroma practically leaps out of the glass when pouring, and theres a big juicy surprise on the first sip.. the Odell IPA explodes with sweet, fresh fruit. Mango, tangerine, orange; its all there. Amarillo anyone?

A nice white head that really holds its shape persists through most of the glass. The brew is a pretty golden yellow.

I could sniff this one all day. It reminds me of mandarin oranges in the can. The best smelling IPA I've encountered in my short beer drinking history.

The bitterness is what I would call moderate, and its in perfect sync with this beautifully balanced IPA. Alcohol isn't perceived, and theres just enough sweetness to really showcase the citrus flavors. Some nice, gentle caramelly accents are present. Mouthfeel is on the light side, but again, its exactly where it should be.

I love this beer. I've always been an Odell fan, but man...what a surprise. I'm going to get more tomorrow. Distinctive, memorable, and one helluva value at under two bucks a bottle. Its hard to imagine a better IPA aroma.

___

Since writing this I've tried dozens of highly hyped IPAs (Furious, Pliny, Stone, etc..), and none of them can touch Odell. I enjoy this beer more every time I drink one, and I wouldn't change a thing. Interesting, complex, balanced, and delicious; perhaps the most underrated brew in all of beerdom. (1,356 characters)

A - Pours a translucent golden straw color with a moderate off white head that leaves some moderate lacing.

S - Mild citrus hops with a equally present malt sweetness.

T - I like my IPAs a little more bitter. This is very well balanced between the hops and the malt. Mildly citurs and sweet. A good brew, just not really my style.

M - Sticky sweetness and moderate viscosity.

D - At 7%, not strong enough to be a sipper but not light enough to be easily sessionable. The building sweetness surely limits me. (512 characters)

A- Copper color, very clear. About an inch of head that goes away rather quickly. Poured into a pint glass. Left tremendous lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Very fruity/citrus hoppy like smell. Smells tremendous.

T- Delicious. An initial citrus hop burst and a tad bit of a malty background. Very complete IPA.

M- Leaves a nice bitterness in the mouth. A tad oily too.

D- Very drinkable. May not be a session beer due to the 7% ABV, but can easily drink many of these in a sitting. (491 characters)

12oz single, shipped by the black knight himself

appearance: poured into a sweetwater pint glass, light golden-orange body with a fluffy white cap...rather light and a fairly clear appearance

smell: nicely hopped IPA, pulpy citrus - tangerine, grapefruit, orange, tea-like aromas

taste: This is a nice little IPA - sweet mango citrus, green tea, tangerine and other citrus, strong nutty notes...nice moderate west coast hop profile

mouthfeel: medium-light

drinkability: high, give 7% (488 characters)

Thanks to the one fine BA, jtrockschalk, for allowing this brew to cross state lines during a recent, most excellent, trade.

This IPA suffers from something of an identity crisis. I grabbed it by the front, tossed it into a glass, & started sniffing around for clues. IPA, it said, distinctly but softly. Looks like an IPA, smells like an IPA, must be an IPA. My deductive reasoning skills are finely honed.

Tastes like...an IPA that's looking to be a bit to finely balanced. Too much malt, I growled. While the hops were there, so, too, was the malt, & an underlying (with an emphasis on the "lying") bit of mustiness that I didn't dig, but marked it a bit suspect. This beer hasn't been hanging with a high-brow crowd, if you know what I mean.

I'll let it off with some decent marks for now. Not as innocent, nor as clean, as I'd been led to believe. I'll keep my eye on him. (883 characters)

Pours a very clear pale amber/dark golden color with a large inch and a half slightly yellowed head. Excellent retention and some nice lacing.

The aroma is really nice. A big hoppy nose with big citrus notes, and slightly piney as well. A bit of sweet caramel manages to peak it's head through as well.

The taste is pretty nice. A decent hop profile with a nice bit of citrus taking the lead. It's fairly balanced with little bitterness and a big malt profile. Some sweet caramel and a bit of grain round this one out.

Mouthfeel is somewhat watery, thin to medium bodied and very lightly carbonated. Feels almost still in the mouth.

Drinkability is fairly high. Alcohol is certainly manageable, and the flavor is decent. It's a solid offering from Odell and it would certainly be easy to drink a few of these in a sitting. (826 characters)

Outstanding IPA.
Big flowery resinous nose.
Supreme balance, with a large malt backbone that supports the hop build nicely.
Grapefruit rinds, orange peel, fragrant and spicy florals, and sappy pine.
Very tasty and quite an easy drinker, this beer is awesome from the bottle as well as on tap.
My first beer I tried on my trip to Colorado, and it was definitely a great start.

GABF Weekend '08

I'm very impressed with this beer, as I was their porter. Balance being the key, this beer strikes a major mark with a very well attenuated malty character with low lying sweetness (caramel and breadiness), which allows the hops to shine. An agressive hop blend of grapefruit, orange rind, pine, and a boquet of flowery, perfumy hops particularly in the nose. No apparent harshness or agression in the mouthfeel despite such boldness in the taste (Two Hearted Ale does this as well), allowing the beer to be supremely drinkable. Finishes with a crisp, cracker-like dryness and a riding orange rind note. I'm not sure if IPA's get any better. (659 characters)

Pours a light, copper color into glass producing a frothy head. Clear as day. Cascade hops bombard the nose, producing an aroma of citrus--particularly grapefruit. Grapefruit is first on the palate. As the beer warms i detect a bit of woodsiness/oakiness to it. Also, a smidgeon of white pepper. The finish is very smooth as opposed to say Bridgeport IPA, which closes with a very bitter finish. Well-balanced by the malts. Medium-bodied mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability. Great offering by Odell. (497 characters)

I feel like a little school boy getting all psyched up for recess every time I head out to Odell's in anticipation for this incredible IPA on nitro. Pours an unmistakable light copper color. A regular non-nitro head of about one finger that doesn't hang around too long. Cascade hops are the first thing you recognize right away. But it doesn't end there. You get all the obvious citrus, floral, grapefruit, juniper notes but also about three or four other hop scents. I wish my IPA t-shirt was scratch and sniff. The taste experience can best be described as transitional. It starts out very citrusy and sweet but slowly progresses into that great hoppy delight that you would expect from a great IPA. It hangs out on the back of your tongue just long enough to head back up to the bar and order yourself another. This beer is in my top five IPAs. (848 characters)

Pours hazy gold in color with 2 finger head that lingers awhile leaving quite a bit of lacing as it subsides. Aroma is that of grapefruit, smells promising. First taste is bitter grapefruit and a bit astringent in the finish. The malt character really comes through as you get further down the glass. Adequate carbonation holds the body up well, leaving a nice tingling sensation on the tongue. Not overly complex, but certainly tasty and very drinkable. This is a very solid offering from Odell and one I'd buy fairly often if it were available here. (551 characters)

Usually I can say, this is a East or West coast IPA. Not with this one. To start, the pour is a clear amber color with a light golden hue throughout. A nice off white head with good retention and ok lacing.

The nose is unique as the hops are pleasant and not over the top, but still assertive. A great mix of floral, earthy, citrus and a hint of pine. Some grapefruit and orange and a hint of pineapple on the backend. There is a subtle but good malt backing. Some hints of maltiness and a touch of caramel and a feint hint of honey as well.

The taste is very well balanced. The malt is blended nicely with the hops. The malt starts with a malty sweet taste up front but is quickly balanced with a light bitterness that is a bit subtle but still detectable. Finishing hops really come out with a nice citrus & floral mix. A mix of grapefruit, orange and herbal/floral hop is assertive but not over the top. Very clean yeast with no off flavors.

The body is moderate and easy drinking. Carbonation is light but ok. Overall this is a great example of an IPA and one that has won multiple awards. Great balance, with an assertive hop characteristic that isn't a punch in the face. (1,180 characters)

I loved Odell's Pale Ale so I had to give the IPA a try.

A- Honey colored with a 1/2 inch off-white head that reduces to a film. Lacing is decent.

S- Great smelling beer. Grapefruit, orange, tangerine, pine, and a tiny bit of pinapple.

T- In my top 5 IPA's. Sweet and very citrusy in the beginning. The sweetness slowly transforms in to bitter hoppy greatness while the pine sneaks in.

M- Pretty respectable mouthfeel. Somewhat light and a little oily.

D- Very drinkable. Not to heavy but with great complex flavors, what more could you ask for.

Odell continues to impress me, I haven't found a beer of theirs that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. (651 characters)

nice label design, and I really like the unfinished feel and unbleached look of the paper used

a: pours a one finger head that shows excellent retention and good lacing, the beer is a clear golden color

s: starts with very fresh C hops upfront, sticky resinous and tropical, very heavy on the passionfruit, pale malts provide a nice backbone but don't interfere with the star, that's about it...very simple but wonderfully aromatic

m: carbonation just under medium, body on the lighter side but not thin

t: fresh PacNW hops dominate start to finish, pulpy flavors of tropical fruits and new pine over a light pale malt body linger into the finish while giving way to a pleasantly high bitterness

d: clean mouthfeel conducive to constant sipping, highly drinkable for a semi-high abv

overall: around the level of Stone IPA, not quite a Two Hearted, but these three share many similarities...very happy to have found this

great find in the desolate but gorgeously scenic town of Green River, WY...a couple Deschutes (way old) and a range of Odell (fresh) found in a not-so-promising-in-appearance beer/liquor/tackle/tack/gift shop about a half mile walk from my hotel...cost me all of 6 dollars

Gorgeous orangy-yellow in my SA beer drinking glass. Two fingers of luscious white foamy head.
Aroma of sweet hoppy bubble gum. Touch of bitterness, then a nice semi-sweet hoppy flavor. Ripe fruit...honeydew melon. Very clean, crisp and light bodied. Super refreshing taste. Dry on the finish (292 characters)

Poured from 12 oz bottle to a pint glass the liquid is a rich orange with light but thick carbonation. The head is medium, off white, and leaves ok lace.

The smell is lots of citrus, and some grassy notes.

The taste is good citrus hops along with a bit of earth grass, really a well rounded IPA. The brew is really pretty nice. Good malt and well balanced.

The mouthfeel is also quite good, big body very thick and creamy with nice carbonation.

The drinkability is very good this is a must try brew for the serious IPA lover. Prosit, MK (540 characters)

Bottle courtesy of mmtmatrix poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clearish golden amber with a small bubbly white head that showed good retention and left some sporadic lacing. The aroma is like walking into a pine forest, big on the floral hops, with a little bit of lemony citrus hops on top. The sweet bready malt is present if you look below the hop explosion. Lemons are the first thing I notice in the taste, before the sweet malts make a brief appearance. The hops come back in the finish with a nice pine hop aftertaste. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a hint of hop stickiness. This is a great IPA and would be a staple for me if it was local. Highly recommended! (683 characters)
