12 ounce bottle purchased from Odell back in April for under two dollars, figured this was going to be the only way I would be able tro try this beer but ended up seeing it all over the place afterwards, reviewed from notes while drinking it the last night in hotel room, golden orange with some yellow highlights, over an inch of white foamy head, aroma consists of piney hops, toasted grains, earthiness, and lemon, flavor starts off quite dry with an earthy feel, finishes with a hint of toasty bread but the pine comes out full force and provides nice bitterness, medium bodied, nice crisp carbonation, could drink a few more bottles with ease, dry but very smooth, crisp and light overall, very good IPA and is reminiscent of west coast interpretations of the style, wish this stuff was available here, this would be a great bargain for the nine or ten dollars I saw six packs going for around town, will drink again, recommended (934 characters)

Poured into a 4oz sampling glass at a promo event.

A: Orange/amber color, with a thin white head that didn't last or lace well.

S: There was a floral bouquet of citrus (pineapple, pink grapefruit, etc), but it was way overpowering by sweet orange, as if someone had mixed it with O.J. concentrate. Was a little nervous to take a sip.

T: No evidence of hop bitterness whatsoever, except for a dryness on the aftertaste, that I can only attribute to a hop presence. The flavor, like the nose, was WAY overpowered by orange/tangerine sickly-sweet flavor. Given all of the positive reviews I read, I was WAY disappointed.

M: Medium-bodied and decently carbonated.

D: I just couldn't get past the orange flavor dominance. If I wanted orange juice, I would've asked for Tropicana.

I really hope that this was just a bad batch, because I intend on giving it a second shot. (872 characters)

Poured from a chilled 355ml bottle.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy, deep yellow, almost orange colour. Pours with a large fluffy head, which shows good retention. Carbonation seems light.

Aroma: Heavily floral on the nose, with powerful aromatic citric hops.

Taste: Big hoppiness in the flavour, imposing a perfumy bitterness right from the start. There are mild biscuity malts hiding under the hops, providing a little sweetness to balance the hops. Grapefruit also comes through along with hints of lemon. It all ends with a resurgence of the hops, providing a clingy bitter onslaught.

Mouthfeel: Light and crisp on the palete, with a mild carbonic feel, and a kinda greasiness.

Drinkability: This is a superbly crisp and refreshing beer, served chilled it is great for the summer. The balance of flavours is almost perfect, providing a fantastic taste. The hops are potent to say the least, delivering a strong bitterness that is incredibly addictive. I want more! (974 characters)

I've got to say, this was the best beer of the weekend. $12 a six-pack, but worth it. Poured clear copper-orange with a squatty whtie head. Okay retention, but thick lacing. Ripe, pink grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, and peach. Very perfumey, but fresh. Velvety mouthfeel with good carbonation. Crisp, yet lingering finish. The taste was exceptional. Clean, fresh hop character, even though this is not a "fresh hop" IPA. Lots of grapefruit and tangerine, with mango and even a little strawberry/kiwi. Small doses of pepper and resin. Pleasant malt backbone gives it a little biscuit to balance it out without making it sticky sweet. As for drinkability, having one just made you want more. An outstanding IPA. (708 characters)

Got this as an extra from a trade with beerdavis (thanks, Jason)
Poured from the 12 oz bottle into a pint.

A: Slightly hazy orange, and a little lighter than I'm used to seeing. Frothy white head with very nice retention time, but didn't stick to the glass much at all. Pretty much stayed floating right on the surface.

S: Sweet and citrusy with heavy hop notes. Typical pine overtones but they all combine into something really special that actually clings to the nostrils.

T: Not very complex, lots of bitterness but not overly so. On the finish there's a sweetness that hangs around for only a short time, but it contrasts with the bitter perfectly. I found that breathing in deep through the nose while taking a sip makes it a completely different way of experiencing it.

M: Very smooth and balanced, medium bodied. Has the expected IPA stickiness.

D: Very well balanced and easy to drink. Would gladly have it again. (926 characters)

Color is on the lighter side for the style, with a deep gold hue. Perfect white foam head, holds decently. Spiced pine nose with a grapefruit/ citrus backbone. Seems like my kind of IPA as the malt sweetness smells not very strong.

Very orange-like citrus flavor. Not sweet. The mouthfeel is not syrupy and is quite light, setting up for a refreshing taste. The piney spice carries through nicely also, and I realize this is probably the closest thing to a Blind Pig I have tasted. The finish is remarkable in that I finally get a touch of toasty malt with some light dryness, well done.

This beer topped my expectations. It actually tastes like it was made in California, and that doesn't happen too often. Very similar to Pure Hoppiness or Blind Pig. If you like your IPA's more hopped and less sweet, this will do you right... (833 characters)

355ml bottle bought online from Beersofeurope...

Poured a light yellow amber colour. White head poured big and frothy then faded slowly to light coating with thicker edging... lightl carbonation... quite a lot of sticky lacing...

Aroma - Lots of juicy grapefruit, apricot and apple fruitiness... floral honey, some orange peel, light sweet biscuit maltiness, traces of mint, sea salt, metallic notes, talcum powder traces, some wheatiness, grassy and earthy notes...

Taste... Good sweet biscuit / light caramel malts followed by grapefruit and pear fruitiness then lots of bitter citrus and pine hops, grassy notes, light apricot, faint breadiness, floral honey, clove traces...

Feel - Sharp initially then smooths out... light / medium bodied... A supremely drinkable brew even at 7.0% as the alcohol is very well hidden...

Overall - Yet another excellent US IPA. Extremely well balanced and drinkable... definitely recommended.. (935 characters)

November 2009 bottle date; Sampled August 2009
A solid pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a fat two-finger thick, light tan colored head. The beer is a pretty red tinged, copper color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright copper color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of pungeant hops; a mix of fruity, citrusy components and slightly dank, herbal hop notes that mix together quite well. Up front there are abundant notes of lychee, grapefruit skin oil, concentrated apricot and bright bergamot notes while the middle and finish of the aroma is more dominated by dirty hemp oil notes, herbal pine needle aromatics and really just a nice, dank hop character.

Lightly sweet malt up front almost gets stripped away by the aggressive hops in the middle, but peaks out towards the finish again just before a linger, biting, herbal bitterness cleanses the palate of all malt character. There is enough malt here to carry the hops, and in fact you can actually taste some of the malt notes underneath the hop onslaught; a touch of biscuit malt character, some light caramel as well as a touch of toasted grain cracker flavors join the fleeting, clean malt sweetness. This is actually quite light bodied; in fact it almost doesn't have enough texture to carry the hop flavors as it can seem a bit on the thin side at times. A lot of the juicy hop fruit notes of the aroma are muted here in the flavor (not enough residual malt character to accentuate these notes); these notes are still here, and they are quite noticeable though with flavors of lychee, herbal grapefruit zest notes and tangerine zest flavors. The harder hop flavors are quite evident with ample notes of pine sap, hemp oil as well as just a solid dank herbal hop component.

The aroma of this beer is just sticky with hop lupulin, unfortunately there is not quite enough body and structure to this beer so that the flavor is just a bit too unbalanced. In fact this is one of those beers that would have actually carried the hop character better if it had just a touch more residual malt character left to it. Don't get me wrong, this beer is pretty tasty, but it is quite easy to see how I would like to improve it. (2,204 characters)

Got this as an extra in a trade with Bennetj17. Cheers to ya!

My Tonto Sam Adams glass was dirty and had a crusty yogurt spoon in it, and I was lazy, so this went directly in a big Tripel Karmeliet goblet. Sue me!

I want to get back to drinking this so I'll be brief: I really like Odell IPA. Looks great, big poofy head on a clear eyed brew, smells fun and well done, with loads of hop character balanced out to smooth, fruity apricot perfection, tastes wonderful, cool, hoppy-minty, spicy, sweet, generously malted, harmonious, fully delightful from a bold start to semi-bitter sticky end, wet and dare I say gulpable... this is the real deal, folks! Should be in the BA top ten in my righteous opinion.

I want more. More I say! (733 characters)

A - Bright medium-golden hue; clear; cumulus off-white head leaves sticky, thick lacing

S - Absolutely wonderful nose; like a sea breeze of refreshing, light, fruity, juicy, citrus hop scent; the smell erupts from the head and zings the nostrils

T - Gorgeous smell continues onto the palate: fresh, juicy rush of citrus/fruity hops and bright bitterness; delicious hop bouquet on the lighter, brighter and robust citrus side; super fresh and borderline hop bomb taste; slightly sweet undercurrent provides great balance; beautiful, though muted, malt tones; alcohol is never present

M - Slightly cloying hop bitterness last on the tongue, though dry; carbonation is noticeable and aids the hops' mission on the tongue; nice medium body that is filtered just right

D - The big, compelling, inviting hop flavor never gets too bitter or off-putting, making this one of the more drinkable IPAs I've ever tasted -- fresh from the brewery to the growler down my gullet. YUM ;) (974 characters)

Great beer here from Odell Brewing.
I bought this as a single while in Denver for vacation, but I wish I had picked up a sixer.
Lighter colored IPA, yellowish amber with decent head and lacing.
Very citric and floral bouquet in the nose, with the perfect hop flavor shining through the bitter foundation.
Very good IPA. (321 characters)

Got as an extra from bonsreeb85. Thanks dude!

A- Pours a deep golden color with a huge foamy white head. Nice sticky lacing rings all the way down.

S- Huge whiff of grapefruit and orange peel. Big citrusy hop aroma. A bit of pine and some spice. This beer smells like its going to be a great IPA.

T- Nice rush of citrus grapefruit and piney hop bitterness. A nice light caramel malt sweetness is present in the finish for balance.

M- Medium body with lots of carbonation.

D- This is one fine IPA. I must say that I have had the pleasure of trying a few fine hoppy beers from Colorado and none of them have disappointed. (626 characters)

Slightly hazed copper body capped with a thin bubbly dirty white head. Lacing is actually pretty full for the amount of froth on top. Aroma is chalk full of tropical hop sensations: pineapple, grapefruit, mango, tangerine... The list goes on. Orange marmalade. It's also smoky and resinous as well. Probably the best smelling IPA I've come across. Beer enters the mouth with a solid caramel malt base, but that sensation doesn't last long before it's pummeled with the aforementioned tropical sensations. Great hop flavor. Bitterness is very clean and enjoyable during and after the drink. Body is medium to medium-full. Moderately carbonated and extremely enjoyable.

I recently did a blind tasting of 13 IPAs which included some big hitters like 2 Hearted Ale, Masala Mama and Bitter Woman. This not only came out on top of my ratings, but also of my brother's. To me, this beer tastes like an IPA version of Hopslam. Awesome. (929 characters)

A: Light pale copperish color with diamond clear color (as brilliantly clear as you can find) with light but good head

N: Nose has lots of piney hops centennial, horizon or simcoe

T: Taste also starts with piney hops and some strange malts, starts very soft and light but spreads over the tongue, its got a nice crystal malt

M: It coats the tongue with a dry but frothy mouth feel

F: Finish is bitter and has that plasticy simcoe taste, its pretty dry and evaporates off the tongue easily, some spicey hops also dazzle the tongue on the finish

Final thoughts: This is a really great IPA and quickly became one of my favorite IPAs, just wish I could get it easily around here. (680 characters)

This beer was poured into a pint glass. As it was poured it created a fair amount of head but the retention was a little lacing. The aroma is of a sweater hops smell giving a note of a good balance of hops and malts. The taste of the beer is of a medium dryer amount of hops. The coriander and malt is slight but barly there. The aftertaste is a decent one but not something that makes you crave them. (401 characters)

A) Pours with a nice active head then settles just a bit. Has sticky, big bubble lacing. Copper in color. Visible carbonation. Transparent.
S) Citrus - sweet orange. Just a bit of caramel notes.
T) Malt and hops are balanced well. Starts with a sweet nose, just a bit of caramel. Then transitions to the hops - citrus notes. Orange. Grapefruit. A bit of apricot. Ends with a hop bite and lingering earthiness in the aftertaste.
M) Medium body. Smooth. Some CO2 fizz, but not too much. Some tannin feel.
D) A delicious IPA. Well balanced. True to form. Pour me another! (568 characters)

Personal favorite local brew of mine, and I am just now getting around to reviewing it. I have been so carried away w/ trading lately, that this beer gave me a wake up call saying "hey stupid, look what you can get in your own back yard!"

A - clear topaz color w/ well retaining foam top and some sexy lacing

S - huge piney and citrus nose, wow! I look like an idiot because I cannot stop picking up my glass -only to sniff not drink! (they should make air-fresheners that smell like this)

T - hop bitterness is the king of the castle, plenty of it to feed the whole family of taste buds. BUT they are kept in check by a delectable fruity, backround. Not just bready malt like so many other IPAs i've had, this fruity sweetness has character, almost tropical in a way. bitter but not overly so finish leaves me begging for more! I don't beleive a better balance can be achieved in this style.

MF - not too oily or carbonated, just right. and a medium full body.

D- too high, i can and will drink this till the cows come home. (1,030 characters)

Just out of the fridge, poured from a 12oz bottle with date 092909 and raised leaves around the neck and a guy riding a bucking elephant redeo style on the label. Thanks to bonsreeb85 for this goody.

Pours a bright clear goldenrod/orange. Nice bubbly head leaving spotty lacing as it dissipates.

Aroma is strong! I'm smelling peach and pineapple, pine, grapefruit, orange, so much juicy fruit and hops. I already know its gonna be so delicious.

Taste is so well balance. Hop blast up front with a great citrus flavor. Immediately balanced with malty sweetness for a great drinking experience. It has a sweet bread like flavor and feel to it.

Very oily hop texture. Medium body with just the right amount of carbonation. So good. Drinkability is great for this 7% beast and the IPA lover. Cheers! (800 characters)

thanks to rsquared618 for the extra!

12oz bottle, with date of 080709. tasted in early/mid may 2009.

classic pale golden amber, with honey orange tones. clear. 2-finger off-white head, fades slowly to very thin but constant layer. great lacing, almost curtain-like later down the glass.

aroma: fresh pine, citrus and grapefruit (rind and zest), touch of apple esters and apple skin, into caramel maltiness. hint of peach. faintest trace of diacetyl. a nice yet complex balance.

taste: great balance of fresh citrusy hops and light piney resins, with caramel maltiness and fruity esters. bitterness is moderate, with crispness and very light resins.

medium body, smooth with mild resins again in finish. tingly, moderate carbonation can be fluffy.

simple but good. thanks again! (783 characters)

Poured into my Dead Guy Ale glass.

A- Super clear pale gold color. Halfway down the glass the head dies down to a quarter inch thick. Some lacing on the glass.

S- Citrus, big hop aroma, piney, grapefruit.

T- Not to biter at all. Pretty smooth actually. Very clean taste, bell balanced. Some honey and grapefruit. Alcohol is well hidden. Pretty tasty, mellow, IPA. Kind of pricey though, 6 pack=$11. Probably won't buy again till I see it for at least $9.

Light orange color with a big big white fluffy head. Smells of hops and pine. Tastes just like an IPA should: citrus, mainly grapefruit rind, strong bitterness. Mouthfeel was right on the money--good carbonation tingle with a smooth velvety finish. Drinkable as hell. First rate. (279 characters)

Received a 12 oz. bottle via trade with Teke0611. Thank you for the brew.

Pours a slightly cloudy orange color with one finger of foamy white head. Has a very strong grapefruit hop aroma. Couldn't get much more out of the nose than that. Taste is in line with the smell, but with a nice malty backbone that comes in to play that balances it out. Overall a very solid IPA. I wish I was able to get these in Massachusetts. I may have to get a trade going for a few of these. (473 characters)

This is my kind of IPA....top notch juicy hop flavors that blend with a perfect malt backing...

A-Gold colored...not much more to say...a little whisp of a head..

S-Big time citrus...pink grapefruit, tangerines, mango, papaya, maybe a little squeeze of pineapple...beyond that there is an herbal/white tea type aroma as well...pretty complex

T-The big juicy citrus and tropical fruits are all there again but the light bready maltiness now emerges...this is a juicy flavorfull IPA...very little raw abrasive bitterness is detected.

M-Finishes almost sweet..fruity sweet..body is medium to full...if anything a little sticky..

D-Top notch IPA..would match up with anyone out there....actually reminds me a little of a smaller Hopslam.. (739 characters)

Pours a clear amber color with two-fingers of white head that had good retention before eventually settling to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass.

The aroma was not as strong as I would expect from an American IPA. I picked up citrus hops with hints of grapefruit. A nice caramel malt aroma as well and overall has a slightly sweet aroma.

Very balanced IPA. Sweet caramel malt, citrus/grapefruit hop flavor, also some resiny pine hops as well. On the higher side of bitterness as well as some alcohol warming.

Nice body and texture. Medium to light body and nice carbonation. Nicely matched.

A nice balanced IPA. Good flavor with out being overly bitter. Refreshing. (702 characters)
