A - A clear marigold brew supports a two finger bone white head that looks frothy and rich. Lots of crisp lace is left on the glass. Looks like a German pils.

S - Mandarin oranges with a trace of the tin they came packaged in. Dank "herbal" notes, and you know what I mean by "herbal." Smells a bit fruity on top of the jungle of hop buds. Tangelo and mango too. This smells really nice! It's been a while since I've had a good hop fix and I can't wait to dive into this one.

T - Much like the nose, this is full of really fruity citrus and summer fruit hoppiness. Mango and passion fruit are there along with the expected grapefruit. The really tight and malty background is firm like hard tack biscuits, but provides a really nice template for the herbal fruity hop flavors.

M - Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, firm, slightly attenuated, and EXTREMELY dry. The finish on this "herbal" brew is all cottonmouth and I like it!

D - A great IPA! I like the summer fruit and the marijuana like aromas, and the dry finish is killer. This is good beer.

Thanks to MilwaukeeCrusher for bringing this beer north on his visit to Vancouver.

A: Pours a slightly hazy apricot colour with big pillowy bone white head with plenty of lacing. Small amounts of champagne like carbonation trickle to the surface.

S: Floral scents of orange flower water together with tropical fruits of lychee, mango and pineapple with a grapefruit rind backbone and hints of fresh pine. Solid notes of sweet malts balance out the forward hops.

T: Big front notes of tropical fruit along with citrus peel, pine and orange flower water. Middle notes are surprisingly very malty with a lingering bitter finish of citrus peel.

M: Coating and syrupy feel that coats the mouth. Very smooth.

O: This is an excellent ipa that manages to put forward big hops and yet create a very balanced beer that is smooth and refined. This is definitely up there with the best ips' s I've had the pleasure of sampling to date.

Poured into a standard unchilled beer glass.
A- Honestly I wasnt expecting much after pouring this beer. It did not have the darker amber tint nor did it have any hint of yeast sediment that I am accustomed to for IPAs.
S-Faint Hop smell. Not overpowering but present and promising.
T-Absolutely deliciously bitter. Definitely not a taste that hits you right away and lingers strong as something delicious.
M-Perfectly carbonated and not overly watery.
D-Could definitely drink multiples and it is almost recommended to truly appreciate the taste of this beer. It struck me initially as something not that special, but after enjoying a full beer it is definitely something I will not reconsider spending money on.
Overall-This was a peculiar IPA for me. It initially struck me as a crap beer masquerading in a pretty bottle. As I continued to drink it, the complex flavors and aftertaste delivered a truly pleasurable experience.

Appearance: pours a nice golden orangish color. Solid 2 finger head with aggressive pour. Nice head retention with good lacing.
Smell: I smell a nice sticky sweet malt presence. Hops are present in the form of a pleasant orange tangerine smell. Slightly malt forward smell.
Taste: Taste follows the nose. I get more of that sticky brown sugar malt. The hops are balancing the strong malt presence nicely. Orange, tangerine. Little bit of alcohol, booze there as well.
Overall: very good example of an American Ipa. Would like to have seen a little more hop in this brew. Balance in this brew is very good.

Pours golden yellow color with a large bone white head that left some nice rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma is straight up grapefruit. I can't believe how much grapefruit is in this beer. Rivals Two Hearted! Also picking up pale sweet malts in the background, but not much. This thing is hop-centric. Flavor follows the nose endlessly. Lots of grapefruit, plenty of pine, juicy, tropical, and herbal, an almost minty-like finish, dry, crisp. Again, this one is all about the hops, but I'm not finding it ridiculously over-bitter. Just a nice hop flavor that doesn't really need to be balanced by any more malt. I hate to say it, but I'm actually glad the caramel malts have been restrained in this brew. Medium body, carbonation is light but tight. Good stuff here. I could drink several of these in one sitting, which I can't do much with IPAs these days. So I've now had 4 different beers from Odell (didn't review the St Lupulin) and all were very solid. Looking forward to trying more from this brewery!

Review from notes on 11/21/09. Thanks to BigDank (Mitch) for opening my eyes to another great brewery!

A - Poured golden honey, crystal clear, with a very nice bubbly 1" white head. Large continents of lace in my tulip. Retains as a thin cap. 4.5

S - Grapefruit and passionfruit dominate the nose, with small hints of pineapple coming through. Malt character is muted but the hops themselves lend a lovely bouquet. 4.0

T - Honey malt, very little bread character, followed by a huge amount of hops. Hop flavor tends to be leaning to the grapefruit/citrus type but a bit of juicy pineapple comes through as well. Finishes mildly bitter and dry. 4.0

M - Light, crisp and refreshing. Well carbonated and smooth. 4.0

D - Highly drinkable. An excellent IPA. 4.5

A- Golden cider color. Lighter hue for an IPA. Low medium head. No legs. Bright IPA.

S- Malt, very little lemony citrus and low hop profile (pine).

T- Very great light IPA that doesn't have overbearing hop qualities of some IPAs. I am really enjoying this. Light malt, almost has some pilsner qualities.

M- Medium build with just the right amount of carbonation.

O- I have Myrcenary a few weeks ago and I didn't like it. It was too malty. This is top 5 IPA's that I have had. I do not claim by any means to be an aficionado of IPA.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Nice label and designs in the glass. Pours a orange-golden color and retains a thin white head with good lacing.

Sweet and crisp hoppy smell. Detected what almost smelled like sweet tarts at first sniff, but that has faded.

Sweet hoppy taste as well. Has a crisp hop bite which is nice.

Light in the mouth and the hops make a good feeling on the roof of my mouth.

I would drink several of these and want to try it on tap.

On tap from brewery.

A- Cloudy orange with thin tan head and nice spiderweb lacing.

S- Citrus, honey suckles, and earthy hops. A bit of booze.

T- Grapefruit and oranges, pine, floral hops, earthy tones with sweet, warm booze underbelly.

M- Creamy with a warmness from booze. Crisp with a hops bite and dry finish.

D- Good beer for this style. Dry finish is nice and the hops is well balanced. Booze gives warm burn.

Extra thanks to buffs9. Reviewed from old notes. Split into tulips.

A: Golden orange hue. Small beige head. Soapy lace left behind.

S: Nice citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon hop profile. Just a tiny bit of malt lets you know it's in there. however the hops are the star of this show.

T: The hops in the flavor are a solid mix of citrus and pine. You kinda get the best of both worlds. I almost pick out a hint of belgian influence in the finish.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation.

O: A very nice IPA. I would drink this a lot if I had access to it.

Pours a red bronze with a clingy tight white head. Big fresh pomegranate and ruby red grapefruit nose with hints of lemon barley - wafts from across the room. Caramel malts with underlying juiciness, an aspirin hit of bitterness, then lemongrass and big grapefruit (Centennial?) hops with some oil. Spearmint leaf finish, resiny linger. Medium, some chew, little burn.

Amazing nose that the taste doesn't live up to. The hops flavors come through without the IBUs, but the malts are not much besides sweet, which makes me wonder if it's somehow out of balance. Still solid IPA with not the usual Cali lemon-pine hopping - Simcoe, if I had to guess, and plenty of others.

My 250th review.

Poured this bottle into a pint glass. no bottled on date but best but 4/16/2011.

A- Pours a nice and beautiful hazy straw brown with a bit of amber color. A small maybe half in of head appears with has a few fish eye bubbles. Opaque, and difficult to see through. Showing little to no carbonation.

S- A nice hoppy aroma right up front. Extremely floral. Sweet and candy like,. Fruity, apples, lemons, and grapes. A great overall aroma.

T- A bitter kind of metallic finish. Dry. Great hoppiness right up front. A bright citrus flavor that really pops. Grain and bread like flavor are prominent. A light malt character.

M&D- Overall amazing texture on the pallet. Floral hops stick to the sides of the mouth and throat. A low carbonation seems to make the brew a bit thicker than most.

This is one of the finest brews from O'Dells. I really like the beer and like the floral aroma that incorporates the complexity.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a cervoise glass. Stamped 9/22/10, but I'm not sure if that's the brew date or the best before date.

A: Thick, creamy head. Copper body with copious bubbles. Quite clear.

S: Pink lemonade. Strong grapefruit. Subdued (vegetal) hops. Superb.

T: Hrm. It is delicious? Yes. Is it sublime? No. The vegetal nature of the hops carries over and dominates the taste, although the aftertaste is perfectly bitter. The main body also has doses of strong grapefruit and clever hops. Still, I can't get over the strange vegetable taste (kind of like turnip greens).

M: No complaints on this end. A pleasure.

D: Very drinkable for 7% and sure to find wide appeal. A fine American IPA, and recommended for any IPA fiend. I will be trying another in the future, hoping for a less odd flavour.

Pours a light honey-like golden with an exuberant head that falls to nice lacing, The smell is an explosion of citrusy hops. The flavor is in-your-face grapefruit, with peaches and even a bit of white grape juice on the finish. The bitterness is mild and highlights the citrus character of the aroma hops. The mouthfeel is decent, but strangely lacking in carbonation bite. Overall a good IPA, though perhaps a little too delicate for the current standard of West Coast type IPAs.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle (best before 8/20/10) into a Duvel tulip glass. Pours a clear light copper with a soapy white head that fades to a thin sheet but sticky enough to leave some lacing. In the nose I get a good assertive mix of grapefruit, mango, and light caramel. The hop flavor hits right away with the citrus fruits but is nicely balanced with the sweetness of the malted barley. Meduim bodied mouthfeel with a mellow hop bitterness that coats my tongue. I am such a sucker for these citrusy IPA's, more please!

Ride 'em, Pachederm!

Hazy orange appearance, fulsome, fresh white head.

Fresh, vibrant, floral aroma...lively...orange, tangerine, mango....abso-lovely.

Tastin'...more of the same. Fresh, delicious, fruit aplenty. There's some mango in there, with the orange and grapefruit,
just gorgeous.

Very even-keeled, despite it's 7% abv,...no, wait, maybe not....but it's still smooth, and tasty, and memorable.
An ideal IPA. I could grab this in a pinch with nary a quarrel.

From 6/5/10 notes. Had at SAVOR in DC.

a - Pours a golden color with an inch of white head.

s - Smells of citrus hops, fruit, and pine hops.

t - Tastes of citrus hops, pine hops, and some bready malts late in the taste. A decent amount of bitterness.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A decent IPA. Would try again.
Original score: 4/4/3.5/4/4

EDIT: Had this one again fresh on 06/10/14. Have to imagine they brought it fresh to SAVOR several years ago so not sure if the recipe or this batch is just better, but the taste was MUCH better, with no real bitterness. New notes:

a - Pours a hazy orange amber color with two inches of off white head and mod carbonation evident.

Smells of citrus hops, oranges, fruity malts, honey, tropical fruits, and light resin. Nice nose, lots if citrus.

Tastes of citrus hops, pine hops, pineapples, lemon, oranges, tropical fruits, fruity malts, More pine here.

Medium body and low to moderate carbonation.

Poured from a 12 oz. brown bottle (with beautiful labeling) into a standard clear pint glass.

Appearance: Clear deep golden color, nice fluffy foamy tan head that lasted a while and left nice lacing as it receded.

Smell: Citrus and Pine hops and a slight sweetness. very aromatic, but not overpowering like some IPA's.

Taste: Like the smell, nice clean citrus and pine hops flavors, but balanced by a slightly sweet malt balance. Finishes dry and hoppy, but not bitter. A very good example of the IPA style.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and good carbonation adds to the IPA style. Nothing unusual here, just well done.

Drinkability: Very drinkable due to the smooth finish and a moderate ABV. Easily a session beer. Would love to try this on tap, or from a cask. Great example of an American IPA style.

A - Pours a beautiful orange-yellow color into my New Belgium 470 ml globe glass. One-half finger of white foam. Curtain-like lacing adorns the glass as the beer is drank down.

S - The aroma of in-your-face hops is front-and-center. Grapefruit, lemon, orange, and banana come to mind. Smells like a can of freshly-opened citrus fruit cocktail!

T - Tastes similar to the aroma. Hops dominate, but with some sweet malt in the background to balance things out. Citrus fruits and banana, along with white pepper. In the aftertaste, a bitter-sweet apricot nectar flavor follows through.

M - Medium body with just the right amount of carbonation. Pleasantly sudsy. A smooth-drinking IPA that goes down effortlessly.

O - Fantastic aroma and taste combination that makes this IPA what is is - truly outstanding. Highly recommended.

Pours a clear golden color with a tight white head. Plenty of lacing left on the glass.

Smells of a big citrus hops aroma with some underlying malty bread.

Tastes of the citrus hops upfront followed by a distinctive pale malt note. The hops are nice and assertive but are still kept in check by the malts. Very well balanced even though this is an IPA.

Mouthfeel is a medium with a slightly smooth quality to it.

Poured this 12 oz. into a DFH shaped pint. Embossed date of: 9/19/07. The body was pale apricot and clear. A large barely off-white head left tendrils of lace and a cap of foam through the entire drink. I really like Odell's packaging/labels. The labels look like retro art posters and each style of beer has a label that is similar to the other Odell products. The bottles are embossed dark brown and have low shoulders. Nice.

Smell was citrus and resin. Earthy, pleasantly pungent. Very aromatic.

Taste was of juicy oranges. Refreshing bitterness with enough malts to counter, but not overwhelm the hops. Finished with a robust bittering end.

Mouthfeel was medium in body with fine carbonation. Solid all around.

On tap at a place called 415 in Ft. Collins.

A creamy one-finger white head over a slightly hazy amber orange.

Smells like orange and orange zest and... not a whole lot else. Not complex, but a good scent.

Tastes even more like that juicy citrus, with a bready, malty finish.

Medium to light bodied.

It's not the best IPA I've had by any means, but it's definitely solid.

Odell is always solid and this is a great IPA. Having it bottled is good but there is something a little extra on tap. Great hoppiness and a full body without a lingering after taste make this a top 10 beer, especially on the IPA list. A light fruity flavor adds to the complexity.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip.

Pours a dark golden with a 1" off-white head. Small blotches and bubbles on the glass.

Honey, biscuit, onion, spice, some lemon and oranges, pine

Honey, caramel, some citrus, spicy pine bitterness.

Very nice ipa. Has enough citrus to overcome this spiciest. Also nice sweetness.
