Bottle best by 06/08/2011

Pours a little hazy amber with ruby highlights a thin one finger head, nougat colored with soapy and tight bubbles with sticky lacing that trails down beautifully.

Sweet hop aroma, fresh and floral pine with citrus coming in second. Malty backing with some spices and a medicinal raw hoppiness on the back.

Taste is a bold aggressive hoppiness throughout the beer resin and pine with a sweet crystal and caramel malt spine that helps balance it. Comparable somewhat to a junior barleywine just lacking the alcohol and transition from sweet to bitter. A little raw grassy hops on the back end with some yeast character. Sticky mouthcoating that doesn't strike me as very bitter but still very refreshing.

Mouthfeel gets a little rough with biting carbonation and the slightly soapy mouth coating that is typical of some of the hoppy Odell offerings. Great body though.

This is a bold aggressive wake up for spring kind of beer. Very drinkable and will appeal both to malt and hop fans. One that I just wish were available all year.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass. Best by date of 5/2/14.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber red with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three fingers of off white head that slowly settle into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A toasty and fairly earthy red aroma with a solid balance of sweet caramel malt and juicy hops. Toasted malts with hints of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, yeast, nut, and cracker. Solid hop balance with a good presence of earthy, floral, and citrus hops. Scent of wet grassy hops and pine resin spice. Citrus hop hints of orange peel, lemons, grapefruit, tangerine, and pineapple. A very solid balanced aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma implies, a toasty and juicy red taste with a good balance of juicy hops and caramel malt. Toasted malt with bready notes of biscuit, sweet caramel, toffee, grains, yeast, cracker, and nuts. Big mix of floral, earthy, and citrus hops. Earthy notes of grass and some spicy pine resin. Citrus hop notes of orange, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, and pineapple. Hops are nicely bitter and chewy. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, chewy, and spicy with a drying finish.

Overall: A very solid take on a red ale. Bold with both the juicy hops and caramel malt. Its what you expect for the style.

Crisp clear dark amber. Large head that laces the glass.

floral hops with a nice mellow hoppy sweetness

Very balanced beer. Starts out with a nice hoppy floral bite that fades into your caramel smooth amber malt flavors. Complex and very tasty.

nice amount of carbonation in a smooth yet bitter beer. They really have a nice balance between IPA and Amber ale here. I really like it.

A - Deep reddish-brown with a creamy off white head with great lacing.

S - Hoppy nose with a muted / piney background. Spice and citrus notes jump out at you. Aroma builds as it warms up.

T - This is a tasty red. The flavor of the hops kick like that of the better known Odell IPA, but balanced out by the malts. Slightly sweet and toasty on the finish.

M - Medium-bodied, with the right amount of carbonation. Great balance. Would love to try on tap.

D - Easy drinking. Just enough hops to keep me happy. If you'd like to try a delicious malty IPA, try one of these. My new favorite amber/red. Another outstanding job by Odells.

A -- A hazy, rusty red brew pours to a two finger khaki head which settles to a filtered translucent liquid with a thin froth, leaving layered lacing.

S -- Floral hops, citrus rind, and pine sap in the nose, a slight whisper of malt sweetness.

T -- Follows suit with the nose, slightly grassy, really clean flavors of roasted malts, slight grain, and fruity / citric tones.

M -- Medium body with moderate carbonation which is complementary to the style.

D -- A textbook Red, worth a try and a repeat. Solid brew.

Finishing off my last one before Odell Brewing Company shows up to Minneapolis on Monday.

Poured into a tulip pint

A: Amber-orange. Medium carbonation. Silky white head sits on top, but dies down to a lace. Looks lovely as the light shines through it.

S: Floral hops at first, with a hint of citrus. Hop aroma is a bit muted however. I get a ton of malts however. Nice caramel tones with a hint of toffee and breadiness. Some deeper, richer aromas like prunes as well.

T: Beautiful flavors in this one. It trends on the maltier end for a red ale, however. The malts are quite flavorful with deep caramel flavors, a touch of toffee and some really nice prune/plum flavors in the end (almost dubbel-esqe). Some hints of chocolate and toastiness as well. The hops are mostly in the end with some citrus notes. Mostly grapefruit, but really not a ton of hop flavor. The bitterness is smooth and right on.

M: Light-medium bodied. Smooth, but finishes crisp. Medium carbonation.

D: A very nice amber ale. Definitely on the maltier end, but that is what I like about it. Lots of complex, malty flavors. Quite enjoyable and even more drinkable. I will buy this again.

Clear brilliant red amber color with a decent white head that hangs around and produces some nice lacing.

The aroma is roasted malt, caramel, citrus and pine.

The taste starts with a rich caramel malt followed immediately by a pine resin and grapefruit hops kick, at near IPA levels, that continues through the finish and lingers. Very nicely balanced, plenty for the hop fanatic and malt lover as well.

Medium/full bodied, smooth and very drinkable.

Odell Red Ale

Appearance: dark amber, medium head, and good lacing.

Smell: grapefruit citrus and hops.

Taste: rich malts, whole hops, and a hint of citrus.

Mouthfeel: medium and slightly malty.

Overall:
This is a nice brew. The balance is very good. I was surprised not to get a strong citrus flavor like the aroma suggested.
