Review from notes:

12oz served in a SN IPA glass

A - Reddish copper body, 2 fingers of dense head that takes it's time. Thick lacing left behind.

S - Bread/biscuit malts, slightly fruity, English yeast, leafy green hops, pine, fruit bread.

T - Citrus hops up front, good malty backbone, some bready caramel, slightly toasted, pine comes through along with a blast of grapefruit citrus bitterness on the finish.

M - Creamy carbonation, medium full body, smooth feel.

Very well rounded red here. Great execution all around. The malts blend very well with the hops and yeast providing a tasty drink from front to finish.

Re-review from 12oz bottle (still not sure this is the same brew as their Red Ale but whatever) -

A: Clear amber with a huge creamy off-white head that leaves decent lace.

S: Pine, grapefruit, bready malt, blood orange, floral hops, tangerine, faint herbal notes.

T: Herbal bite, suggestions of pine and resin, citrus, smooth, bready, crystal/caramel?, grapefruit, floral, orange.

MF: Medium smooth body, creamy and low bitterness.

O: More malt presence disguises the hop presence here and smooths this beer out. Good stuff, nice hop flavors from an amber ale. I'm keeping both reviews here, since these were obviously released as two separate beers. Scores and notes were very similar, so its more that possible this is the same recipe I guess.

Old review:

Had on-tap @ the Twisted Timber, Boise ID. Served in a Rogue pint shaker.

A: Dark golden copper, nearly opaque, excellent off-white head lacing.

S: Muted...hops, floral, kiss of citrus, malt, faint toasted caramel, light tropical fruit, orange.

T: Light resin, orange, spices, faint cinnamon, toffee, citrus, grain, toasted bread.

MF: Medium body, clean, light bitterness, some creaminess, low-to-medium carbonation.

O: Aroma improves and hops emerge as it warms. Not the best hoppy red I've had, still not a bad beer.

Served into a tulip glass. Odell always does a nice job with their seasonal beers, the Extra Special Red was one of my favorite reds, but now the "Red" has turned into a nice spring classic.

A= Good looking beer, copper-red, with off-white head, short retention.

S= The smell is not quite as intense as I would prefer, but it makes for a nice search that reveals smokiness and carmel.

T= The is a great red. the spicy, hop and bold, malt balance is warmly welcome.

M= Short, not that of some of my favorite barley wines, but a nice after taste and smooth mouthfeel.

D= The drinkablity is not that of a beer that you play drinking games with (thank god) but it is superb in that you go back for more quickly.

Overall= This beer is a great spring classic, not a light spring beer, but not that of many spring barley wines, a blend of what we all love of winter and must say good bye, with a touch of summer, showing its temptation for a nice beer to be enjoyed in the warm sun.

Drank both on tap and from my growler immediatly after the tapping party this evening at Odell.

Color is spot on to what a red should be- it's red. Really red. Smell is mostly forgettable, it's just too basic to be interesting. Mostly hops, some malt fighting through. Taste is better. A predominant caramel maltiness (you know, like a red) that ends in a citrusy and floral hop finish- very reminiscent of an IPA.

Crystal clear copper color with a thick off white head. Good lacing.

Grapefruit, pine, and bready aroma.

It's heavily hopped but has a strong toasted cracker malt backing. Grapefruit and resinous hops.

Clean mouthfeel, medium-light body.

A very nice hopped up red that's approachable and easy drinking.

A: A beautiful, opaque, medium red color with a large 1 inch head that retained well throughout out. Nice lacing.

S: Smells of mainly citrusy hops but is well balanced.

T: More on the bitter side but has a nice malty taste.

M: Smooth. Very tasty!

O: Overall its a very nice Red Ale. I haven't found one that I don't like yet! Odells take on this style is very good. I would purchase this one again.

Bottle care of drumrboy22 as an extra in a recent trade, thanks man! 12oz uniquely shapped/scribed brown bottle poured into a pub glass. Best by date on the label is 5/11/11.

This brew appears a clear amber to copper red color with a finger of yellowish stained creamy head. When held to the light, some very faint particulate is stuck in suspension but you really need to look close to see it. A stream of bubbles rises to the surface and supports the cap. An interesting webbing of lacing is left on the glass after each sip. A light swirl revives the creamy froth to less than a finger which remains throughout the duration.

The aroma of this brew is fresh with hops. It smells of hoppy sweetness that is floral with a scent of citrus and pine included as well. Some grassy notes and a spiced indication is evident. As it warms, it picks up a faint green yeasty indication and a bit of mineral aspect comes into play. A light scent of caramel malty sweetness is evident but it pales in comparison to the characteristics of the hops. Overall, the smell of this brew is solid. It is reminiscent of a mini version of Nugget nectar.

The taste of this brew includes a toasty grain flavor that is somewhat caramel-like with a faint touch of must. It is clingy with oily resinous hops that taste of pine, grass and herbs. It is slightly medicinal coupled with some minerals and a green yeasty flavor comes through the backend. The 6+% alcohol is not hidden, it is evident with a warming factor and flavor which accents the herbal/medicinal aspect of the brew and really warms the back of the throat.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Quite easy drinking and enjoyable. This is quite the hoppy rendition of a red ale. In so many ways this reminds me of a scaled down version of Nugget Nectar. This really is a good representation of the style. With the best by date being still 2 months out, I am curious how one of these would have tasted when it was super fresh. This is only my second experience with Odell and I am liking what these guys are doing.

Glowing ruby with dense viscous taupe head that fades to a creamy rim that webs. Luscious strawberry-orange jam nose. Toast, some chocolate malts and lean red currant up front, vegetal middle, with rhubarb, cedar and blood orange hops. Caramel end and sap linger. Medium and sticky.

Like Red Rocket without the hops. I could see it as a spring seasonal - it's both March and May. Unusual, but up to Odell's high standards.

On tap at Odell's took a growler home. The pour is a crystal clear ruby red color with a light fluffy head. Good retention and lacing but did not last through the tasting.

The nose is mostly hoppy with similar notes to their IPA. Some citrus, earthy and floral hop notes. Some other fruity notes, mango pineapples and a light herbal backing. The malt is present but is light compared to the hops. Some lighter roast notes with a hint of kettle caramel notes.

The taste is similar. The malt comes out a bit more than the nose and balances well against the hop notes. More of a generic malt note with a light roast flavor. Some barley malt notes as well with a sight caramel note. Very clean overall. The hops come out with more of a citrus taste with supporting grapefruit and earthy notes. Some minor floral hops in the finish. Very clean yeast notes.

The body is between light and moderate. A bit light for style, would have like to see more depth. The carbonation is light but balances well. Overall this is very similar to the IPA only darker and some caramel/roast notes backing it up. The body is lacking but still a good beer.

12-oz bottle into Samuel Smith "Tulip" pint glass

A - 3 fingers of thick khaki head over an attractive cloudy, semi-transparent, dark red-orange body; great lace on the glass

S - delightfully hoppy; grapefruit, grass, bubblegum

T - same grassy, citrus hops from the nose dominate the flavor; a decent amount of sweetness and toasty malt is also present for an excellent balance

M - medium body with medium carbonation

O - This brew is very drinkable and is an excellent ale for any hop lover.

Glass: Standard US pint glass

Odell's Red is a well-balanced blend of hoppy and amber malts.

Porus a 2cm head of beige to light-tan foam, made up of small to medium-size bubbles. Excellent lacing, cascading strata adorning the inside of the glass. Head has above average retention, eventually receding to a thin cap atop the body of the beer. Body is a dark amber-garnet color, with light bringing out red, orange, and brown hues.

Aroma is malty, hoppy, and fruity (esters) with good balance that plays a modest toffee and brown sugar maltiness off a very citrusy, grapefruit rind-like hop component, with the hint of toasted nuts making this even more interesting.

Front of the palate finds toffee-like malts with flowery and citrusy hops. Mid-palate is hop-forward with grapefruit flavors and bitterness, well-matched, but still overplaying toffee-like malts. The back of the palate finds increased bitterness from hops and toffee-like malt sweetness. Aftertaste features lingering moderate bitterness and grapefruit flavor with a sweet, toffee-like nuance in the back.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with carbonation levels of medium intensity, resulting in a smooth, slighty foamy mouthfeel. Closes dry, with little residual stickiness lingering on palate.
