On tap at the Red Cow, into an English pint glass

A: reddish amber with a tight 2 finger off-white head that lasts for several minutes
S: faint earthy/piney, woody notes and a little caramel and breadiness
T: more bready heaviness, some earthy herbal hop notes that give a little lift in the second half. As with most of Odell's beers, this seems well made but the flavors don't completely harmonize for me.
M: this is the best part of this beer. Medium carbonation, but in terms of flavors -- full, creamy, smooth.

overall: easy drinking but substantial...tastes like a hoppy red should. Doesn't do anything that really grabs your attention...in fact one might think it a little muted, I go back and forth on the balance but there is some nice subtlety that over the course of one or two, really pleases.

Look: Deep hazy ruby amber with generous light tan head that settles to a film with lacing around the edges.

Smell: pine and sweet citrus

Taste: Malt has a complex character, mildly sweet but a dry almost a lager-like character, hops is fresh piney and sweet citrus but maybe slightly more restrained than with the standard IPA - the finish is less bitter than the regular Odell IPA if memory serves.

Body: Medium body with fine carbonation. Smooth.

Overall: A very pleasant IPA all around, more balanced than is typical without too much sweetness. The hops is nicely presented without too much bitterness. Would definitely buy again.

Dank tropical fruit with a zesty, piney green underpinning. Very interesting hop profile that leaves a lively lemon/citrus prickliness on the palate, but is also balanced by earthy flavors. Berries also come into play, both on the nose and the palate.

Looks gorgeous - a truly red ale with frothy off-white head and sticky lacing.

Not as dank and resinous as some Red IPAs I've had, but this is more fresh and lively instead. Well balanced - another winner from Odell!

Pours a nice dark copper color with a tan head. It's a pretty clean, clear beer in the glass, medium body. At first smell it's mostly citrus and hops that hit you. A nice, easy drinking beer. Caramel, grapefruit, and blood orange hints here. Finish is incredibly smooth, not too bitter. Very good seasonal release from Odell, a nice standout. Hopefully it taste the same next year!

Poured from a bottle with a "best by" date of 4/26/14; into a pub glass. This is formerly named Red; Odell has renamed this to Runoff Red IPA.
Appearance - a red, sunset orange hue with a huge fluffy beige head. Swirling carbonation bubbles. Lacing is laddered on the back of the glass.
Smell - lots of citrus hops in the nose, this certainly starts off as an IPA!
Taste - follows the nose in its hop forward nature! Reminds me of Stone's Levitation!
Feel - not as complex as I was expecting; well balanced, but still a bit one sided.
Overall - there is no doubt that this is a red IPA and not an amber ale. Recommended for all hop heads!

Pours a khaki white head. Color is a ruby hued copper. Lots of lace.

Flavor profile: This beer has a nice juicy flavor to it. Orange with some grapefruit citrus. Fairly tropical. Nice and hoppy as well. A bit floral. A nice malt base to round things out so it's not in your face bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and clean. Medium bodied. Good carbonation.

Overall, I really enjoy this offering from odell. I love how tropical it with just the right amount of hops to not be very bitter. Very drinkable.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into nonic glass
Appearance: pours a thick, sudsy off white head. Head recedes slowly with moderate lacing. Color is amber with a slight reddish hue. Mild streaming carbonation.
Aroma: citrus hops dominate the nose with bread dough some toffee in the background. Mouthfeel: light and frothy mouthfeel, slightly sticky, with a dry finish.
Flavor: initial sweet flavors of bread dough and caramel give way to citrus and pine hops and hop oil through the middle and finish.
Overall: another fine offering from Odell’s.

12oz bottle with a date. it's a couple of months before the best by date

look is ruby-orange with a small foamy head. smell lights up the room; lots of candy and dank fruity hops. rich sweet-bread malt, some of that dry leaf stuff, pine and earth, tart and sweet.

not a great IPA, but a great red ale.

A- Pours a clear dark red-orange. Head is a long lasting off white. Some lacing on the glass.
S- Smell is honey sweetness and some fruityness. A little underwhelming on the nose.
T- Good flavors here. Starts with honey and tropical fruit. Finish is more bitterness with some citrus fruits in there as well.
M- Fairly full body. Medium-low carbonation. Somewhat dry finish.
O- A pretty stellar beer. I could enjoy this one regularly.

Crystal clear copper color with a thick off white head. Good lacing.

Grapefruit, pine, and bready aroma.

It's heavily hopped but has a strong toasted cracker malt backing. Grapefruit and resinous hops.

Clean mouthfeel, medium-light body.

A very nice hopped up red that's approachable and easy drinking.

Clear ruby red body with a thick off white/lightest khaki head.

Caramel malt lends some nice sweetness to the aroma that is balanced out with orange and pine hops.

Pine, orange, grapefruit, bread, and caramel on the flavor.

Medium body, carbonation and bitterness makes for an easy drinker.

Super solid hoppy red.

Pours a rich mahogany, slight haze but still pretty clear, finger and a half of off white head, nice lacing

Smell is earthy resiness hops, citrusy undertones, some melon like sweetness, caramel and bready malts come through nicely

Taste is dank with resinous hop, sweet caramel malt, bready biscuit, there are some fruity hop flavors but they land in the darker fruits, apple, melons. Sweet malt on the finish, maybe a touch of a metallic flavor

Mouthfeel is medium full, average carbonation, slight dryness but not much.

Interesting take on a "Red IPA", I do not know that this is really a ipa, more of a hoppy amber but either way it is tasty. Glad to have tried it but I will stick to there regular IPA in the future.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. Runoff's liquid portion comes out a nice hearty dusk sunset red with excellent clarity. Sort of an orange/vanilla creamcicle colored head with various sized bubbles, with crazy good lacing to it. The suds cling to the glass like a virus taking over (I guess that's a weird example).

Smell is good. Citrus (clementine, tangerine, and not quite ripe blood orange with no pith)and tropical melon fruit salad are not aggressive, but they are the first aromas to greet your nose right out of the gate. Nice malty aromatics complement the hops as well, sweet buscuity aromas.

Good tasting beer. It's well balanced, but hop forward and most likely designed to be. Nice same above mentioned citrus/melon profile, and again, it's not very potent, but the one of the things that really stands out right away. The only difference is you can get a little more bitter citrus peel. The bready characteristics are there again too, like browned biscuit crumbs, and I don't think it's there, but I have this rye(ish) taste in the back. Overall it's a great tasting any time of the year beer.

Mouthfeel is good. Heavy medium body, like a nice hearty amber ale. Like most everything I've had from ODell, this has a very clean fresh and close to crisp feel. Soft but strong enough carbonation level with excellent balance. Fresh feel that's got a natural sweetness leading to a nice clean bitter finish that's just the right amount of dry. Really drinkable, a great flavorful beer that's very easy drinking. Another nice brew from ODell. Huge props to Geoff for sending me this one, thanks buddy!

Re-review from 12oz bottle (still not sure this is the same brew as their Red Ale but whatever) -

A: Clear amber with a huge creamy off-white head that leaves decent lace.

S: Pine, grapefruit, bready malt, blood orange, floral hops, tangerine, faint herbal notes.

T: Herbal bite, suggestions of pine and resin, citrus, smooth, bready, crystal/caramel?, grapefruit, floral, orange.

MF: Medium smooth body, creamy and low bitterness.

O: More malt presence disguises the hop presence here and smooths this beer out. Good stuff, nice hop flavors from an amber ale. I'm keeping both reviews here, since these were obviously released as two separate beers. Scores and notes were very similar, so its more that possible this is the same recipe I guess.

Old review:

Had on-tap @ the Twisted Timber, Boise ID. Served in a Rogue pint shaker.

A: Dark golden copper, nearly opaque, excellent off-white head lacing.

S: Muted...hops, floral, kiss of citrus, malt, faint toasted caramel, light tropical fruit, orange.

T: Light resin, orange, spices, faint cinnamon, toffee, citrus, grain, toasted bread.

MF: Medium body, clean, light bitterness, some creaminess, low-to-medium carbonation.

O: Aroma improves and hops emerge as it warms. Not the best hoppy red I've had, still not a bad beer.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass.

The pour produced a lot more head than I was expecting, almost too much, but it was still a good-looking, frothy head that formed into a plateaued peak. The head was persistent and chewy in appearance. A copper red liquid with billowing carbonation and a clean, filtered look beneath the head looked delicious. Add to this the semi-opaque appearance and orange hues that add some intrigue.

This beer's smell will take you to paradise. Very tropical and fruity. I get citrusy and piney hops, sweet tropical fruit and bread. The beer is very pungent and aromatic and these notes carry on to the flavor. The palate gets sweet, citrus and bread initially, some pineapple, orange and grapefruit then follow. The beer then finishes sharp, piney and bitter.

This beer is very spring-like, even if it was released while we're still in the clutches of winter. It's light, effervescent and easy-drinking. Starting sweet the beer becomes dry and then finishes bitter. It's distinct from most reds and IPAs in that it's not as creamy and malty and much easier to throw back.

It's a pleasant drink and one I could drink far into the summer. I could easily finish a six pack on my own.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass. Best by date of 5/2/14.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber red with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three fingers of off white head that slowly settle into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A toasty and fairly earthy red aroma with a solid balance of sweet caramel malt and juicy hops. Toasted malts with hints of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, yeast, nut, and cracker. Solid hop balance with a good presence of earthy, floral, and citrus hops. Scent of wet grassy hops and pine resin spice. Citrus hop hints of orange peel, lemons, grapefruit, tangerine, and pineapple. A very solid balanced aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma implies, a toasty and juicy red taste with a good balance of juicy hops and caramel malt. Toasted malt with bready notes of biscuit, sweet caramel, toffee, grains, yeast, cracker, and nuts. Big mix of floral, earthy, and citrus hops. Earthy notes of grass and some spicy pine resin. Citrus hop notes of orange, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, and pineapple. Hops are nicely bitter and chewy. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, chewy, and spicy with a drying finish.

Overall: A very solid take on a red ale. Bold with both the juicy hops and caramel malt. Its what you expect for the style.

2014 release six pack picked up, must be pretty fresh, date on bottle says 5/2/14, guessing this means drink it by then.. served around 35-40 degrees in the Dogfish/Sierra Nevada IPA glass.

A: Perfect, what an excellent red ale color this has, some decent carbonation, perfect red hint to it. poured with a finger of head that dissipates to a thin layer of head that completely covers the entire surface, which is awesome. lacing isn't huge but there are some long lacing legs up the glass.

S: Smell isn't what you want to judge this beer by, idk if it is just me but it smells almost like a rye IPA, it has a bread/red/rye smell that isn't the best smelling beer ever but either way it's not terrible.

T: Awesome, very fresh, has a big amber ale/red ale taste but you also get the punch of the fruity hops that Odell seems to have mastered. Very refreshing beer, and at 6.5% this is very session-able. I seem to be picking up a bit of bready taste as well as some rye. I don't even know if this beer is made with rye but there is a small bit of the rye characteristics with it.

M: Decently carbonated, feels light yet filling, I could drink a 6 pack in the summer on a hot day even though this is a Winter Seasonal. Very refreshing, great beer, would love to have on draft.

O: Pick this up if you see it, if you are lucky enough pick up their Winter'Spring Montage 12 pack that has this along with their latest Roots Release which for 2014 is a Pale Ale named "Wolf Picker" I believe.. if you can catch this beer on draft than of course give it a shot.

Summary: Best red IPA I have ever had, only one I can compare it to is the Elysian Valhalla Red, Odell is an excellent brewery and they seem to have mastered the fruity, juicy, fresh hops, their IPA is in my top 5 and their DIPA as well. What a great refreshing seasonal. Keep it up Odell!

Update: This beer gets better with every sip, find it and try it, it is amazing.

Pours a clear amber color with a tight, white head that leaves big chunks of lacing.

Smells of citrus and caramel.

Tastes of a nice balance of hops and full malts. Caramel and toffee malt leads off with a nice sweetness to it. Hops come in with grapefruit and pine notes. A light bitterness, but well-balanced overall.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a good red.

Runoff Red – Red IPA (6.5%) - O'Dell Brewing Co. (Colorado)

App: Deep raspberry pulp red with a slight inclination towards brown. Nice one and a half finger head that retains very well and leaves ample sticky lacing. Slightly hazy, but overall a good looking beer.

Smell: Nose is pretty much all hops with a sort of odd, petroleum like smell lurking in the background. Honestly a little weak on the nose.

Taste: Pretty straightforwardly hoppy and slightly bitter. Hops are earthy, slightly solvent, and a little bit piney. Small hints of biscuit and roasted malts in the background, but they never harmonize with the bitterness of the hops like a world-class IPA. Pleasant, lingering hops bitterness. Doesn't totally wreck your palate with acidity like some IPAs. Could possibly benefit from a little more Caramel malts. Flavors open a little with warming, but don't really evolve. Very sessionable, but not remarkable.

Mouth: Overall a little thin on the body side, carbonation is good and smooth.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Snifter. 1/4/14.

355ml bottle from Blackfriars, Glasgow (£4.50):
Copper with red tinges and a tiny lacing come head on top that is slightly patchy too.

Hoppy with some caramel and sweet malts. There is some sugar and a generally fruity aroma on top of some tropical fruit notes.

Sweet with caramel and toffee malts and a topical fruit backing that mirrors the nose. There is a touch of alcohol along with the hops but nothing in your face.

This one has a good balance and nice sweet touches that go down well. The beer is fruity and bitter with a medium body and similar carbonation.

A really nice beer from Odell and one that I would have again. There is enough going between the sweet malts and the tropical fruits to keep you interested and the balance between the two is excellent.

Far better than your average red ale, this beer seems to have the hopping that I wanted but didn't find in their ipa.

Pours out a good hearty ruby red color with ample clarity and professionalism in its appearance. 1/2" off white head on it, good retention, stickly lace down one side of the glass.

Taste was hoppy, it led, the red malt flavor that I'm not necessarily a big fan of played second fiddle, I liked that it was carbonated and hoppy enough to prevent any soggy wood mouthfeel that is typical of marginal red ales to creep on me. This is a better than average red ale, in fact, its probably a top 20%er.

Nice dark amber color, thick one finger head that left some nice lacing. Aroma was piney with a hint of grassy hops and a nice sweet malty smell. The taste had a bit of citrus flavor with a good sweet malty backbone. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, and somewhat creamy. Pretty dang tasty beer overall, I look forward to this beer every year when it's released.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Hotel glass (half pint, half snifter)
From: Wilbur’s Total Beverage in Fort Collins, Colo.
Price: Part of a variety 6-pack for $9.99
Purchased: May 2, 2013
Consumed: May 3, 2013
Misc.: Best by June 26, 2013

Poured a dark red clear color with one finger of khaki tan head that dissipated quickly. Average sporadic lacing on the sides of the glass. Average retention, surprising considering how fast the head disappeared.

Smelled a surprising whiff of floral hops to start. Also got some nutty malts, buttery malts and some light caramel malts.

Tasted floral hops, buttery malts and nutty malts for the most part. Hops are the best part here.

Medium-to-light body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, slightly bitter finish.

This beer had its moments but I think something was just a bit off. That being said, I’d probably give it another try.

Pours a amber to copper color, with more than a one finger off white head, with nice retention and lacing. The aroma has grapefruit, citrus zest, toffee, and caramel malt.

Tastes just like it smells with grapefruit, citrus zest, toffee, and caramel malt. Has a nice combination of hop bitterness and caramel malt to make a nicely balanced beer.

Light to medium bodied with modest carbonation. Another nice ber from Odell. I am very glad they distribute to Minnesota.

Poured from a bottle dated 5.29.13 into a pint glass

Pours a very pretty ruby red with about a half inch foam head that stays throughout the duration of enjoying this one. Smells fantastic with a heavy dose of piny hops and some malty sweetness at the end. Tastes quite different than it smells, with the malty sweetness blending quite nicely with the hop presence.

Overall, this beer is one of my favorite offerings from Odell. As I sip on it, I am instantly transported back to my glorious days in Fort Collins as a CSU grad student... This was a beer that I always looked forward to every year, and I always had plenty on hand to share with guests at outdoor events and BBQs. Brings back memories of some of the best times of my life, and for that, I have to give this an obligatory two thumbs up.
