Copper ale with an off white head that falls with a nice lace. The American amber ale has a great nose with lots of toffee, caramel and strong hop spice. Big malt shows up in the taste w/o some of the other flavors in the nose. Hop bite is light but pleasant. Overall, a nice amber ale that gives the senses a nice run for the money and is still very drinkable. Might not buy for home again, but would gladly get a pint in a bar for a refreshing change of pace or a great go to beer for a place with a limited selection.

From notes-
This beer pours a beautiful copper red with a white head.

Aroma is strong of citrus, grapefruit grass with a slight honey sweet maltiness in the background.

The taste starts out with a mouth coating citrusy and pine bitterness, then comes a brief interruption of a biscuity honey malt sweetness, then ends out with a dry grassy and citrusy finish.

Aside from the hop bitterness, this beer goes down real smooth.

Overall, not as good as Extra Special Red, but this is an excellent american red

A: A beautiful, opaque, medium red color with a large 1 inch head that retained well throughout out. Nice lacing.

S: Smells of mainly citrusy hops but is well balanced.

T: More on the bitter side but has a nice malty taste.

M: Smooth. Very tasty!

O: Overall its a very nice Red Ale. I haven't found one that I don't like yet! Odells take on this style is very good. I would purchase this one again.

A: A cloudy, dirty copper in color with a finger of off-white head..nice texture. Leaves a lot of soapy lacing on all edges of the glass with a faint cap, but lots of large bubbles around the edges.

S: A fair amount of hops, but pretty well balanced by caramel, bready malts. Hops seems to be mostly citrus, but I think there's a bit of pine in here also.

T: Mirrors the smell. Citrus and piney hops with sweet caramel and bready malts providing support.

M: Medium bodied, kind of oily.

O: Not the best red ale I've ever had, but to be fair, it's a little past its best by date of 6/15/11. I would really like to try this again fresh and rescore.

Bottle poured into imperial pint glass. Best by of 6/15/2011, but judging by the smell and recent reviews of this winter seasonal, it has held up well, so will review. Thanks to titosupertramp for this one in a little homemade Odell variety pack.

A- Deep amber, two fingers of slightly reddish head that lingers on the glass as it fades.

S- Big caramel malts up front, with a bit of underlying hop bitterness. Maybe the hops were more pronounced when fresher, but this beer still smells very enticing. A very slight roasted malt sweetness.

T- A very balanced blend of roasted malts, hop bitterness (slight pine), and a bready sweetness. This might have been hoppier when fresh, but I don't know if that would have made it better or not. I like it quite a bit as is.

M- Slightly light for a winter seasonal, but not bad bu any stretch. Like their IPA, this is extremely drinkable.

O- This is a very nice, balanced amber ale, with no real points to complain about from me.

A -- A hazy, rusty red brew pours to a two finger khaki head which settles to a filtered translucent liquid with a thin froth, leaving layered lacing.

S -- Floral hops, citrus rind, and pine sap in the nose, a slight whisper of malt sweetness.

T -- Follows suit with the nose, slightly grassy, really clean flavors of roasted malts, slight grain, and fruity / citric tones.

M -- Medium body with moderate carbonation which is complementary to the style.

D -- A textbook Red, worth a try and a repeat. Solid brew.

thought to myself that I wanted to drink a red ale tonight, so I reached in the fridge and grabbed this.

Best by 6/15/11, drank 7/25/2011

A-Good red color with great head retention

S-very hoppy. Just what i was hoping for. More on the lines of piney but some nice citrus there as well. Little bit leading to the malty side but I cannot complain as i heeded the bottle dates

T-Alot like it smells. Nice malt backbone with a little hint of hops on the way down

M-medium body and very smooth

O- one of my favorite reds. My glass was gone in no time

This just goes to show you the forgiveness i will give a beer if it is bottle dated. the hops started to fade but it is MY Fault that I drank past expiration, therefore I rated it on what its original qualities would have been

Bought a 12 FLUID OZ. bottle @ the Wine & Cheese Place in Ballwin, MO for $1.99. Poured from the Green/Blue bottle with a "Seasonal" cap on the top into my Gilligan's Island Bar Pint Glass and has a date of 6/15/11A on the back but doesn't say if its a Best By or Bottled on Date...

Aroma- Has a distinct CRACKER JACK'S aroma from the start and tons of caramel character. The hops are medium-high with a piney attribute. Good all around.

Appearance- Pours a 2 finger head that is off-white, bubbly, and has good retention. Has a deep amber color body and the lacing is thick.

Flavor- Very malty and has a strong earthy hop taste. Sweet caramels come into play in the middle of the drink, and then finishes with a light bitterness but smooth.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied, Medium Carbonation, Smooth, but then a bit watery on the finish.

Overall Impression- Huge maltiness and a caramel character like no other. I wish the hops were more dominant but this wasn't a bad characteristic. Drinkable and enjoyed before the U2 Concert @ Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO. Pumped!

Props to chugalug06 for sharing this with me as an extra. Thanks Geoff!

Pour is a reddish copper with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Lacing is almost non-existent. Nose has some deep malt/breadiness to it.

I'm not much for ambers/reds, and the first taste is a pleasant surprise. Nice and light, great carbonation across the tongue, some drying hop bitterness across an otherwise sweet finish. Didn't take long for me to finish this one, and wish I had a couple more on hand.

Glowing ruby with dense viscous taupe head that fades to a creamy rim that webs. Luscious strawberry-orange jam nose. Toast, some chocolate malts and lean red currant up front, vegetal middle, with rhubarb, cedar and blood orange hops. Caramel end and sap linger. Medium and sticky.

Like Red Rocket without the hops. I could see it as a spring seasonal - it's both March and May. Unusual, but up to Odell's high standards.

Amber-as-can-be body really lights up the glass, but the main attraction here is the dark beige head. The color's perfect, and the foam leaves good amount of lacing sticking to the edges. Smell's fairly weak, though. Some lightly toasted scents, mostly. Has a caramel character, but most of the time, a surprisingly bitter amount of hops are present that covers up any other scent. Also has a scent like jazz apples.

Bitter taste on the tongue on the first few swings. The fairly light body bubbles well and gets even better as the brew warms. The grassy hops slowly pull back to reveal a sweet, bready flavor that's all-too-welcome. Heck, even a bit of alcohol seeps on to the tongue, which is surprising for a beet of this style. Finish is clean as can be, but leaves the gut quite warm.

Overall/notes - A good slow-drinking beer, if you ask me. I haven't had many ambers that have been this bitter, and while it's a nice change of pace, I'd prefer that amount of bitterness to stay in American Pales, myself. Not too bad on the whole shot.

Poured into a snifter. "Best By" date clearly marked on bottle.

Pours deep crimson and clear (I left some sediment chunks and whatnot in the bottom of the bottle). The small head that formed from the conservative pour slowly fades and leaves nice lace on the glass.

My first whiff yields a highly pineapple-hop rich aroma. Some swirling brings up sweet pine-sap, grapefruit, and more pineapple.

Hops dominate the flavor of this ale, with some (but not as much as one would think) malts supporting the blossoming hop flavors. The flavors are closely tied to the nose, with the addition of some subtle malts.

The mouthfeel is good, with medium body and enough carbonation to keep things lively.

Conclusion: This is a fine ale, however if something is called "red" I expect to taste some fairly rich malts, which I don't really with this beer. The hops are juicy and flavorful. If there was more balance with this beer I would probably love it. I don't feel it is over hopped, but instead that the malts are not rich and complex enough. Alas, it seems that for the typical American palate, any style that is overrun with American hops becomes a new favorite. Just hop the junk out of it and it will earn an 'A' on BA, no matter how far from the original style it has drifted...

Big, hoppy colorful ale.

A wild red-orange color. Nice lacing and pleasant carbonation contribute to an good mouth feel. Peculiar smell of Band Aids. Seems fairly rich and malty but very sharp with a bit much of the grapefruit peel. Hops are the big story, which I guess is one option for this "anything goes" style. To me it's more of an IPA with the big resiny flavors and long, long bitter aftertaste. Hops are actually pretty good.

Candy-like flavors are balanced by the bitterness. Makes a bold statement if you want an assertive brew. Let a couple of fingers warm up and it's a good exercise in hop tasting, whatever their blend might be.
