July 6th, 2015 - O'Dell's Bourbon Barrel stout has all the strength and intensity of a bourbon barrel aged brew but without the overarching oak notes. It's heavy on the smell, with Kikkoman soy sauce, dark brown sugar and a nice, deep dark molasses note. The flavor *is* boozy with a long burn and medium body, but it's lighter than most intense stouts. It even has a slight tang, which is where that bourbon might be coming. And in the aftertaste there' a long sweet and roasted carrot note, too. I do appreciate they've wrung the excessive oakiness out of it.

2011 edition on tap at falling rock, i just dont know how they do it with some of these rarities. this is outstanding too, and even though thats a lot of time elapsed since its release, and even longer since its brew date, the beer is amazing, and time has served it extremely well. definitely a hint of oxidation creeping in, and carbonation hasnt been particularly well conserved, but this is what you dream of when you make a beer like this, really and truly. silky smooth to look at, eggshell luster on it, some lazy mocha colored bubbles. it smells great too, molasses and burnt sugar right away, there is a great fusion between the sweet and the black, like making a pot of barbecue sauce and having some bits burn on the bottom, get all charred and black but retain their sweetness. so good. lots of coffee character too, cocoa nib quality as well, and frankly a lot less whiskey barrel to it than i expected it to have, maybe its faded, maybe it was never that intense, but its just not as intense as it often can be. vanilla and wood there for sure, and the feel is certainly mellow and mature. very very smooth feel, a touch thin for what it is, but this ends being really dry, and hiding its alcohol very well at the end, another surprising twist, especially given the sticky sweet aroma it has. plenty of dark malt bitterness later on too. in the end, odell has made a brilliant base stout, traditional but also unique, and the time in the cellar has been instrumental. id love to try it fresh to compare, but get down to falling rock asap and get a pour of this beer while its around!

Bottle shared by Mike, thanks for the opportunity!
Rich roasty chocolate and caramel offset by earthy woody bourbon notes that compliment quite nicely. Great stout!

This is a good representation of the style, but that style isn't really up my alley. It's very high alcohol, as you would expect, so be prepared. I don't drink bourbon, so it's not something I'd seek out, but I tried it at a food and beer pairing event and it went well with the dessert we had.

750 mL bottle from 2011.
Pours viscous and pitch black, with a 1/4 finger thick, pale cream head that dissipates into a layer of lace atop the beer. Not as heady or lacy as I'd hope, but the dark body is enticing.
Just what I'd expect from a BBA beer, oaken, vanilla, and spicy bourbon. Slight hints of dark and sweet malts, and some chocolate, are also present. It's tasty smelling.
I continue to get lots of oak and bourbony spice, but I suspect it's mellowed considerably as I'm not overwhelmed by these tastes. In fact, I notice the sweet vanilla and malt and some tasty dark chocolate.
Smoothness is heavy here. This beer has mellowed out excellently. No boozy burn. Silky, creamy and thick-bodied, there's only a slight bite to this and it's more from a rye spiciness than booze.
This beer is right there. The flavor offers many tastes and it's still smooth and silky. I would say this aged very well.
