A: Pours a light brown - I would not say Auburn, but possibly when it was brewed it was lighter and or the color has darkened over time. Large white head that stuck around for a while and laced the glass pretty heavily.

S: Smell of caramelized sugars, dark fruit / plums, light butterscotch, and sweet malt. Not a whole lot of hop presence if any that I can tell.

T: Taste of nice roasted malt, caramelized sugars, oak, dark fruits especially plum in flavors, some peach, and some cotton candy flavored sugar / tropical fruit. Butterscotch flavors also mix nicely with the Caramel malts. Slightly boozy, with peach flavors. Think peach vodka...

M: Relatively thick, I would not say chewy, but for an 11% still relatively thick.

D: Overall pretty enjoyable. I have seen a few people grumbled about the price tag which I can agree with - this one got built up on a trade, so it is a blind price tag, but I wish I had all the beers I traded for it because I know they were not worth this one.

Bottle # 0970

The beer pours a murky brown color with a huge three inch light tan head. There is great head retention, but no lacing.

the aroma is nice. It's lightly tart with a bit of a citrus note. There's a touch of oak and it's lightly phenolic as well.

The taste is ok. It's got a slightly medicinal quality that is backed by a variety of malt. It's lightly floral as well, and then that oak comes through as well. It finishes off boozey and lightly fruity.

The mouthfeel is pushing full bodied, and rather dull. It's odd because it has a decent carbonation presence with a very fine and natural bubble.

Drinkability is moderate. The flavor profile is interesting, but a bit much to try and consume the 750 by yourself. The ABV is high, but it works in the beer. I guess I'm not terribly impressed overall, and I would definitely say Woodcut #1 was the best of the first 3.

Poured from the bottle into a Tulip.

There are such a few amount of reviews out there for this beer. I don't know if it's from the price tag alone or from people who buy it refusing to put how disappointing this beer is into words. Time to add one more negative deviation to my review count....

The pour of this beer, aside from the fantastic 2+ fingers worth of head, was foreboding. More so than Hitchcock's opening to Rebbecca. The appearance, in a word, was septic. I feared for my life and grabbed for a knife thinking that the creature from the Black Lagoon was going to pop out at any time and strike. Okay, the lacing was nice. But the creature from the black Lagoon could rip through nice curtains.

The smell was just okay at best. There was caramel, raisins and a decent touch of hops in the mix. The oak barrel aging was noticeable in the smell, but not truly welcome.

The taste. Meh. I've had plenty better in this style, that didn't cost so fucking much too. The mild hop profile blended well with the oak aging and fruit flavors, the raisins, maybe other dark fruits and the caramel again. My buddy noted it's like Bigfoot Ale, we both agreed that that's better though. There's an earthyness to this beer though that probably comes from the oak aging and in this case, I don't think adding it to the barrels truly in the end added a damn thing to the beer. It was more of an unwelcome house guest, one you can't say no to, you wish he was gone, but to keep up appearances you had to grin and bare his presence.

The mouthfeel was okay, it was thick but not overbearing, something you can easily drink and enjoy.

This beer has a Twenty-six dollar price tag on it. That's a lot of freaking money! And I definitly say that it simply is not worth the money. I've had MUCH better beer in this style for a lot less money. This beer is rather pretentious. There's limited quantities, it was aged in oak (for no apparent reason) and comes with a laughable price tag. If a beer was to ever sit in a proverbial ivory tower, this would be it. I wonder if the reviews are so high because people spent so much money on a beer, they want to believe it's good. Who wants to spend this much money and be disappointed? If this beer was say, $8, how much lower would the score be? How much does scarcity and steep prices affect the psyche of the reviewer? How much does it add to the disdain? I can answer that, at least sixteen dollars worth.

750mL bottle - #5793 - into a tulip glass

Pours a murky, completely opaque shade of poop-ass brown. The body looks really, really ugly. Septic. The head, however? Fantastic. Two and a half fingers of tight, compact foam the color of a pair of Dockers pants. The lacing is textbook. If only the body of the beer were anything other than ass.

This smells a lot like a barleywine. Tons of caramel, tons of bittering hops. Appleskin. Banana. Honeysuckle. Sweet booze. This isn't complex as much as it is rote.

Toasted malt flavors meet caramel malt flavors meet bread crusts meet walnuts. TONS of maltiness. Hops are strongly felt; moreso in bitterness than anything else. A bit of banana, a bit of dried orange. A nice oaky finish. This is pretty nice, if uninspired. Unfortunately, it is a flavor profile that plenty of other beers do better.

The mouthfeel works for me. It has a nice thickness to it with a fairly substantial amount of felt carbonation. The drinkability is awful for me. I mean, it is pretty average for the style but when you consider that this beer is TWENTY SIX DOLLARS a bottle, for a bottle that Sierra Nevada Bigfoot completely outclasses - at $10 a sixpack - in a similar flavor profile.

Is this beer worth the money? Hell no. It is tasty enough; you won't hate it. But you probably won't love it, either.

This is a nice deep shade of auburn, with some crimson tinting. Two-plus fingers worth of creamy, medium tan colored head. The retention is very good and the lacing is in thick strands and spots and is quite sticky.

A nice, rich, maltiness comes from this glass. It is accompanied by a very nice bourbon presence. Lots of toasted coconut, vanilla and buttery oak notes. Light traces of dark fruit sweetness and hints of rich caramels. Light presence of earthy hops.

A good amount of cherries and dark fruit sweetness seems to come forward, first. These are followed by a short hint of earthy hops, then drizzled with some butterey caramel notes. This gives way to light hints of vanilla and toasted oak, which then open-wide to let in the toasted coconut presence. The finish has another short burst of earthiness, which helps maintain the wonderful balance that this beer has.

This has a full body, yet not quite thick. The carbonation level is mild, almost medium. This provides a wonderful smoothness, almost slick, with just a tiny hint of creaminess.

The 11.00%abv of this beer is only hinted at, with a slight warming sensation as it goes down. Other than that, I'd never guess that it was this high in abv content. It is very flavorful and quite nicely balanced.
Very drinkable, indeed. I wish that I could afford to buy more of these.

Purchased at Odell Brewing. Bottle number 4434, Nov 2009.

A nice pop upon opening, the beer started rising towards the opening but isn't a threat to gush.

It pours a hazy deep red colour with about a 1 finger head of foam. Lacing is the typical Odell impressive. A great looking beer by my reckoning.

The smell is way nice. Balanced aromas of caramel malt, wood from the oak aging, and a nice fruitiness of plums and raisins. Oh, and a light but right mini zing of hop bitterness. I'm serving this near room temp and the nose of the beer really shines.

The taste has notes of oak, caramel, plums, raisins, a toasted bread flavour, and some minor but efficiently used hop bitterness. The overall flavour comes across as a tempered sweetness and my palate is enjoying it. Good stuff.

Medium bodied, medium carbonation, towards the back end it comes across as on the spritzy side but that's ok.

Drinkability? Plenty of flavour, a bit too carbonated for my tastes at the back end, a growing presence of alcohol, hell this IS an 11%abv offering, I'd say it is still a fairly good drinker. I wish I had some at my beck and call this past Winter. ;^)

All in all, a very enjoyable brew.

750ml corked and caged bottle courtesy of hoppymcgee. Thanks again Greg for this favorite from the EBF. Shared among 6 BA's and friends. My sister is extremely grateful for this one! Poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.

A - Cloudy amber brown color with a thin cream colored skim coat of foam that never really goes away. Some nice lacing as the beer level drops.

S - Beautiful woody aroma...tons of oak in here. Nice rich malt smells too, with some caramel, dark fruits, raisins, some alcohol and some malty sweetness. Complex and very enjoyable.

T - Rich malty backbone...some sweetness, breadiness and caramelly notes. This blends really well with the strong woody, oaky flavors here. Alcohol flavor mixes in nicely and only adds the smallest amount of heat. This is really smooth.

M - Medium bodied with a rich and creamy carbonation that seems just shy of medium in intensity. Malty and woody flavors fill the mouth and linger well into the aftertaste. The wood is dominant but well integrated.

D - Pretty intense in flavor. Malt and wood are the key elements. Splitting a bottle 6 ways yields less than I would like to have...probably splitting a bottle 2-3 ways would be perfect, but very happy to share this among a group of people that really appreciate it. The look on people's faces as this was brought out was really worth it. Thanks again Greg!

Pours an ever-so-slightly hazy reddish brown with an enormous, thick cream-colored head that recedes slowly to a thick cap with sheets of lacing on the way down.

The aroma is really nice with some caramel malts and oaky tannins creating a perfume-like aroma, very fragrant. Also some sugar-coated apples and pears.

The taste is more of the same with the sweet light fruits teaming with caramelized sugar and sweet malts to form the base beer. The finish is spicy with the oak and slightly dry with a hint of alcohol burn.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very smooth with the oak coming out aggressively in the finish.

I really enjoyed this beer and thought the oak was a perfect foil to the seriously sweet underlying beer. Excellent.

Picked up a bottle in Goebels (Wichita)

Bottle 6018 opens with a resounding pop & pours with an effervescent orange/caramel with 3 fingers of tan head. Outstanding lacing & head retention

S: Apple peels, oakyness & plums

T: Oaky dryness, pears, leafy hops & faint toffee notes, dryness & a touch apple peels up front. Hints of fogs, raisins & general jammyness, along with a pronounced dryness, port notes as well once this warms up. Finishes fruitty, a bit of almond, with much oakyness & just a touch of herbal hops providing a good counter balance to the sweetness

MF: Fairly bubbly, sticky

Drinks easy enough for the ABV, this reminds me of Chardonnay, which I'm not a huge fan of, this could probably stand at least another year's aging. Given the price I can't see buying another bottle to satisfy my curiosity. My least favorite of the the 3 woodcuts...

Pours a cloudy darker orange amber with a HUGE loose foamy light tan head that fades slowly, leaving a nice amount of Belgian lacing behind (4.25). The smell is aggressive sweet yet well balanced with a hoppy background; nice complexity. Visibly effervescent, the surface is adorned with tiny pools of bubbles that are keeping the surface collar alive. Full flavored, the taste matches up well with the nose, sweet vanilla, cherry, grassy hop and amaretto. The mouth feel is excellent (4.75) and inviting; creamy smooth texture adding nicely to the overall drinkability. The 11.0% ABV is all there in the end and lends a little heat but it's not distracting. I really enjoyed sipping this one from my new Chivas glass.

Poured out of a 750 cork and cage. A very nice crimson color .

The nose is fantastic. Caramel, oak, with touches of coffee and chocolate.

This beer was hard on my palate. Too intense, heavy on the oak, and a little hot.

The heavy flavors make this beer seem a bit thicker than it really is. I had a tough time finishing half of a pint. It was the probably one of the top 5 best smelling beers I've had.

A steady pour into my 25cl tulip glass is a bit more frothy / carbonated than I expected; I end up with four-fingers of lightly amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a murky, concentrated amber color that shows a lightly hazed, deep red color when held up to the light. The head sticks around for ever, barely subsiding at all over the past five minutes. The aroma is nice, somehow it makes me think of a mix of oak juice with white wine grapes. I find myself noticing layered aromatics of subtle kiwi, goose-berries, currants, a woody tropical fruit and definitely some aromatics that smell like a slightly green coconut. The oak somehow manages, despite being the dominant note, to not be overwhelming here in the nose. This just smells really juicy, ripe and fresh but also having a zesty oak-derived spiciness. I really like how the oak brings out such an exotic fruit character in this beer.

Lightly sweet, and definitely over-carbonated as the beer fizzes quite a bit as it rolls across my tongue; luckily some vigorous swirling helps resolve the textural issues. The finish sees a spicy, lightly astringent ample woody oak character linger on in the palate along with rich caramelized and toasted malt notes. Fruit flavors of currents, Chardonnay grapes, orange marmalade (but without that piquant orange zest note). The spiciness can be peppery at times, almost even pine like along with the spiciness of freshly cut wood that is almost green in some ways. Once the excess carbonation is gone this sits viscously on the tongue with a texture that lingers on the palate; this is definitely a sipping brew. As the beer warms up a note of vanilla soaked, sweetened coconut becomes more noticeable.

This is a nice beer, it doesn't quite live up to the standard set by No. 2, but this is still quite the enjoyable brew that I will be happy to work my way through slowly this evening. I do like that the oak manages to play a defining, dominant role here without overwhelming the total experience and without being overly sharp and aggressive. I really wish the flavor could have lived up to the promise of the aroma, this would have then been a stellar beer.

A: Pours a nice shade of amber with a nice tan head. Light retention and some spotty lace.

S: Aromas of light summer fruit, apples and pears. Hints of caramel and brown sugar as well. Mild oak and light vanilla round things out.

T: Very much like the aroma. Apples and pears. Nice sweet malt backing, more toffee than brown sugar. The vanilla is there along with the oak.

M: On the fuller side of medium good carbonation. Good.

D: Good I like them in order as they appeared. One is the best followed by two and three. All are solid beers though. I hope they keep the series going.

The beer pours a nice amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. It has a tremendous wood barrel aroma; very nice. It's well accepted by the warm alcohol of the Strong ale. It's made up of mostly pale malts with a bit of light crystal malts for color and balance. The taste is much the same. Yumm. Warm alcohol meets fresh oak barrels. It's smooth as hell with a nice bit of complexity. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a damn fine beer. I love the wood character. It's very aggressive, yet mellowing and easy drinking.

Deep ruby red pour with a thick, tan head that retains itself nicely. Very good looking brew.

Layers of toasted oak, nuts, vanilla, alcohol, and peanut brittle fill out the aroma.

A lot going on here. Caramel, fruit (cherry,cranberry), raisin, nuts, vanilla in the fade, and it has a root-like note going on as well. You definately feel the alcohol more than you taste it.

Full bodied with active carbonation. So I think it's got some breathing room to lose a little of both during ageing. Classy stuff. This is a great series from Odell.

Bottle# 2170..

Lite tan head.. slightly hazed reddish/amber brew.. lacing and retention..

Nose is lite floral hoppiness .. tannic wood.. something that I can only describe as Perfumy.. caramel malts are there, but are blown out a bit by the wood..

Flavor has a descent bitter hoppy backbone that moves into caramel and lite toffee.. huge woody overtones are pretty aggressive .. lite herby hoppiness seems out of place .. toasty malts and woody tannins seem to mesh well.. some lite cherry fruitiness... some mild vanilla .. medium body with a bit bigger than expected carbonation .. I liked this.. but the wood was wayyy too heavy.. I don't know if it would calm down with age, but I bet I will try and figure it out with a trade or two.

Poured into a tulip. Murky, dark brown body. Thick, 2 finger off-white head.

Smell was caramely, and hints of dark fruit. Nice burnt maltiness and good amount of oak aroma.

Taste had the dark fruit flavors as well along with some nice flavors of raisins. Good amount of caramel and dark malts. Fairly strong presence of oak. Mildly bitter in finish helps keep the sweetness from upfront being overbearing.

Mouthfeel was medium/thick. Good carbonation and slightly slick.

Drinkaibility on the medium side. While the beer goes down fairly easy, it's definitely a one nd done for me. 11% was well hidden, but the thickness and sweetness limits the drinkability.

Overall the beer had a very enjoyable flavor while being fairly complex. I could see this being very good with some age.

A- Dark orange/red/brown colored beer dark tan head about an inch tall food retention, and great lacing. Very pretty beer.

S- Huge malty aroma, roasted nuts, spicy alcohol, mildly earthy, cherries, vanilla some citrus tartness in there as well. Very complex and pleasant aroma.

T- Lots of cherries, light oak, earthy woody notes, roasted nuts, vanilla and malty sweetness.

M- Nice smooth beer good hop balance perfect carbonation.

Bottle 2114, dated November 2009. Pours an aggressive 4 finger tan head over a cloudy brown liquid. Smells smooth alcohol tamed by sweet almond, layer vanilla, berry, and well placed barrel. Peppery and mint. Quite a nice sniffer. Lotsa fruits, mostly tropical (pineapple and mango). Berry bubblegum.

Tastes vanilla barrel with mild caramel. Some caramel malts and lotsa esters. Berry and tropical with a sweet white wine. The alcohol is clean and well in balance with the other flavors in regards to both taste and intensity. Finish is wet with oak and mild pepper trying to dry it out. Aftertaste is dominated by the oak. The bottle says the flavor should have almond. I definitely get nut, but I'm not sure it's almond. Not quite hazelnut either.

Md body and some creaminess to the mouthfeel. Strong carbonation and decent drinkablility. Not worth $25 per bottle (I can get a 6er of St Bernardus Abt 12 for that price). Something like 7000 bottles in this batch...I suspect it will be available on shelves for a long time.

Poured into Town Hall chalice.

Pours a nice finger of beige head. Great head retention, but not a lot of lace left. Color is a ruby hued hazed copper.

Aroma: Raisins, grassy hops, cherries, caramel, and a very light amount of alcohol shows.

Taste: Almonds, grassy/weedy hops, raisins, cherries, some oak. It has a roasted feel to it. I am not a big fan of this one.

Mouthfeel: A little heat shows here. It is creamy. but kind of bland. Medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry, but fairly clean.

Overall, this beer is not good right now. I was let down and I would never want to pay this price for the quality of beer that is presented. Maybe some age will do it well, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Over-oaked. Not sure how else to say it. Aroma has plenty of oak and a cinnamon-like quality that reminds me of that Anchor Xmas beer. On the palate there is a light brownbread like sweetness but then you're hit over the head with a 2X4 of wood, and then some of the cinnamon-like flavors towards the finish. Aftertaste is woody. Body is somewhat creamy and smooth, but it's hard to appreciate much beyond the wood prominence.

750ml bottle, dated 11/2009 bottle number 6380. Pours a murky brown with ruby highlights. It has a huge rocky off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet caramel malts and cola with a little resiny piney hops and a touch of cinnamon. As it warms some green apples and alcohol come out.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and some fruit, wood and molasses leading toward a lightly resiny, slightly plastic, hop finish that has a good amount of bitterness. The alcohol is a bit hot. The mouthfeel is full bodied with smooth velvety carbonation.

Overall, this is probably my least favorite woodcut so far. It's still interesting and worth a try though.

Pours a rich glowing brown with shades of amber. Creamy tan head has nice retention and lace.

Nose has sweet caramel malts, rie pitted fruit, oak, vanilla, nuts, toffee, floral hops and spicy alcohol.

Taste has sweet fruity malts, vanilla, wood, cherries, plums, floral hops, carmelized candies and almonds.

Full body silks over the palate. Well carbonated, nice sweet finish.
