Dark amber in the Orval chalice with swirls of foam and very light lacing. In the mouth, however, this stuff is alive with carbonation. Smell of leather and spoiled citrus.

The initial sourish taste is rather off-putting. I worked hard at savoring the confusion of flavors. The rather severe bitter finish doesn't seem like much reward. Any malt flavors have passed over to the great beyond. Sweet and sour with a harsh woody edge. Sweet pickled crab apples with a dose of fingernail polish sums it up.

I have enjoyed quite a few Brett-brewed beers, but this isn't one of them. I think there are some bacteria that went to work on this and the aged result is less pleasant.

From the corked and caged 750 ml bottle bought at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

Poured from the bomber into a sifter glass

Appearance - dark rich crimson color. Lots and lots of carbonation give this a great head with a great lacing.

Smell - quite tart up from followed by a rich malty vanilla smell. I also get woody earth tones

Taste - tart right out of the gates, but then really an off taste to follow it up. Tastes like burnt wood at the very end.

Feel - Very very carbonated and that off taste does not leave your mouth.

Overall - I had this beer right when it first came out, before I was on BA, and remember it quite different. The yeasts in this guy sure did a number to the beer and it wasn't something I enjoyed.

Nice brew, a bretty sweet amber, unusual an a tad repetitive but it does what it promises in a stimulating way.

Presentation: 750 ml dark brown corked and caged bottle. Simple label with a soft retro vertical pattern in cream notes with some orange typographic notes. Small side note with intent, and main description. Notes 5462-2011 vintage, and 9.1% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Lightly hazy deep amber pour, nice frothy head, good retention with a fair surface ring and good touches of lacing.

S - Nice balanced nose, slight sweet funk with some fruity notes… Malty with a touch of funk…

T - And there is something not pleasing my companion across the table about a perfect amber ale broken by brett. But the sweet malty range, slight hoppy touch, broken by the funk, while unusual is working for me. Light tart fruity notes, malty sweetness with some caramel.

M - Medium body with medium/high carbonation, nice flow with a gentle lingering feel in the finish. Complex enough to entice the repeat...

O - Nice flow, well worth the try...

Notes: Long complex happy accident, not entirely sure when my mood would go after an an amber ale with brett but this was rather likable.
