Poured into a tulip. Fluffy, 3 finger beige colored head that held strong. Copper colored with ruby hues.

Smell had big notes of vanilla and oak. Some good malty sweetness, toastiness and mild raisin.

Taste, again, was strong on oak and vanilla. Some mild hotness from abv. Mildly spices finish that was low in bitterness. Mildly malty, notes of raisin, caramel and lightly toasted.

Medium body, medium carbonation and a fair amount of stickiness that coats the tongue and finish. Seems a bit overly sticky.

Drinkability was ok. To much oak, hotness and overall high abv limits it.

I have to start this off by saying, don't expect this to taste like any other Marzen you've had. This isn't your great granny's oktoberfest.

Deep rusty amber with a sustained dirty white head.

A wallop of clean toasty oak is introduced in the aroma. Followed by notes similar to burnt caramel, toasted coconut and vanilla. But again, it's oaky.

Enchanting soft, clean oak, burnt toffee, maple, butter, and vanilla roll across my tongue and down my undeserving gullet. Layer upon layer of complexity unfolds as this opens up. Rich body, pleasantly effervescent, yet very smooth in texture.

It's as if God grew an oak tree, cut it down, made some barrels from it, then asked Doug Odell to make a beer to put in it. He did that. Very well. This is what happened folks. The best Woodcut yet.

750 ml bottle. Bottled May 2010 - bottle number 1617. Pours a hazy tea brown with a monstrous creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is caramel malts, vanilla, wood, some spices and dark fruit and alcohol.

The flavor is caramel malts and vanilla, with some fruits and a spicy cinnamon alcohol finish with a little bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with lowish carbonation.

Overall, it's a little hot and a bit on the sweet side, but I liked it.

750ml brown magnum, corked and caged. Bottling date on the label.

Aggressive head but with careful pouring there is no overflow ... just a massive rocky head. Dark brassy color shows off its clarity. Fresh oak, bready malt, ripe freshly peel oranges, spicy alcohol and hops with a clean nutty yeast backing all fill the nostrils. Very deep smoothness with an extremely creamy body. Spicy, warming alcohol and a think wood character. Maltiness is layered underneath with unfolds with caramel and bready flavors. Hops ring in pretty hard with a firm bitterness and long linger of flavor. Hint of orange and raisin with more spicy alcohol in the semi-sweet finish that eventually gets pulled down buy the wood.

A sipper and a lovely one at that. Encore please!!

Best marzen I ever had. I hate to bring dwn the average rating, but to me its still, well, a marzen. Bold malting. Thank you for sending JMBSH. Was geat with supper, particular washing down the fish. Good drinkability but of course thsi quantity must and was shared. Good head, malty aroma. Vanilla.

Split a bottle with friends. Very interesting. It's deeply floral and herbal with a smooth whiskey-like vanilla taste. The aroma is similar, with a bit more focus on the vanilla. The flavor, by comparison is fruitier with light apple and citrus notes. Frankly I can't taste much Marzen, but it's a fine strong ale.

A -bal aged lager, huh? Let's see.

Pours hazy medium amber with a small but lasting whitish head.

Aroma is oak and vanilla, sweet malt, caramel, and toffee.

Flavor is mildly sweet, very oaky, and a little piney. Decent hop bitterness. Not as tasty as expected.

Nice dry palate. Medium-full bodied and a little syrupy.

A little underwhelming overall, but a nice experiment.

Bottle 5056 opens with a faint pop, caramel coloring with 4+ fingers of fluffy tan head. Insane lacing & head retention

S: Apple peels, honey, brown bready, some vanilla/oak

T: Follows the nose with a tad bit of booze bite as well, plus oaky/cidery notes up front, plus herbal & woody hops. Dryness, tannins, plums, molasses & tobacco as this warms. Finishes dry, oaky with some boozey presence intertwining with green apple that present tart; works for me, clearly an OTT hybrid Marzen, so a .5 deduction is in order for the style, many Chardonnay aspects to this one IMO

MF: Medium bodied with firm enough carbonation to keep this from getting bogged down in the malt. As well balanced as a beer this big really can be IMO

Drinks easy for the ABV, a nice effort, but would caution folks to only spend the $1.00 an ounce if not on a budget & having a passion for bottom fermented offerings. I think this would worked a few % ABV lower & been more nuanced, but fairly solid as it is offered

A: whopping two finger head that stubbornly refuses to die down; thick, frothy rings of lace--some of the best head retention and body I've seen. Deep and dark ruddy brown color.

S: strong smell of green apples and some malt with no suggestion of the oak notes

T: sweet (just short of sickly) malt, earth, dried leaves, smoke, I don't know how else to describe it other than that it's like tasting your way through autumn. Warming alcohol (shockingly subtle for the 11% ABV) and a dry finish round out the close, the alcohol serving to cleanse the palate so that your tongue is free to taste the next round of flavors: a nice lingering oak and vanilla, maybe even a hint of cedar and smokey barbecue, for an aftertaste

M: solid wall of carbonation, sharp and crisp, carries the body and alcohol in perfect balance with the ensuing flavors

D: Odell never disappoints. With every offering I become a bigger and bigger fan. Unlike some of the other extremer breweries currently ruling the airwaves, Odell always seems to take a more subtle approach, one that denotes refinement and an impeccable taste. And this beer is no different. Even with the 11% ABV, I could see myself ordering round after round. Crisp, clean, full-bodied and extremely well balanced, I think they nailed both the style and the season with this one (it literally tastes like Fall). Thank you Odell!

A nice whiskey color orange/copper with a short white head.

Nose is very floral, malty, oaky ("vanilla") and with lots of pleasant whiskey undertones.

Mouthfeel is medium full but rich and with very good good balance. The balance is really one of the strengths of this beer.

Flavors are rich and full malty cooked stone fruit with assertive whiskey/Bourbon character and tones. Undertones of carmel bitter milked coffee and some "whiskey smoke." This one has to warm a bit to get the full flavors and complexities but it's worth it.

From a bottle at Capone's during Philly Beer Week...

A - Two fingers worth of rich creamy slightly off white colored head... Never have I seen such unrelenting retention... A glowing orange amber color...

S - The oak is simply intoxicating... It dominates and does so in a good way... There are undertones of some toasted malts and mild tropical fruitiness...

T - Caramel... Subtle pineapple... Golden raisins... Coconut... Vanilla... Oak... Wonderful balance and complexity...

M - There's smooth and smoother, but this one may be the smoothest of them all... Ever so slightly sticky... This one goes down sip after sip after sip... Smooth, creamy, and exceptional... On the fuller side of medium bodied... Oh so good...

D - I could sip away at this each and every night and be a very happy camper... There's no hiding the 11% ABV, but this one is a winner all the way around... There aren't enough accolades to describe this one adequately... Sophisticated, smooth, and in a league of it's own about sums it up...

Chswimmer shared this one at a recent tasting. Thanks, Craig. I've always wanted to try a barrel aged double marzen-stle lager.

The beer is a murky, hazy amber in the glass, faintly marzen-like but rather turbid. It's topped by a small white cap that recedes to a thick collar.

It smells intensely herbal and medicinal with over the top oak. The more I sniff, the more it smells like rubber to me. There's a bit of pine and a strong spiciness, which is likely the byproduct of the oak as well.

On the palate it's sweet but astringent, herbal and rubbery, grainy, over-oaked and harshly tannic. Dark fruit flavors make a brief appearance in the way of figs and plums. Medium-light in body, the oak completely annihilates the base beer, making for a rubbery astringent trainwreck. Ugh, this is terrible, truly one of the worst beers I can recall having. It finishes with strong tannins and lingering rubber and herbal astringency. This is so incredibly bad, I couldn't choke down more than 2 ounces.

Bright blood orange with minimal saffron head.

Oaked strawberry, tart orange and grapefruit pith with very smart and perky woody edges.

Toffee apple, strawberry jam, tart citrus and spearmint in a sea of complex, cedary oak.

Medium with benign carbonation. Feels closer to 8 than 11%

Lovely stuff. Would never have guessed at the style, but arbitrarily adopting the nearest comparison of an oak-aged wild ale, it stands up very commendably. Only wish I'd had more than 4oz to enjoy.

Pours a slightly hazy deep copper color with a large fluffy white head and plenty of carbonation; leaves a nice bubbly lacing as well.

Aromas begin quite sweet with plenty of vanilla. There are plenty of sweet biscuity malt notes; some breadiness as well. As it warms you get a little of the doughy and bready lager yeast notes which were undetectable initially. In the way background you get a bit of alcohol, but not really even enough worth mentioning considering this is a 11% beast.

The tastes begin with layers of bready and biscuity malts. Then you are greeted with the nice subtle oaky and woody flavors. Both are balanced very nicely; by no means is this a wood-bomb. As you re-examine you detect the flavors from the barrel including good vanilla and some tannic flavors usually associated with wine (tobacco, leather and apple) but are all secondary to the vanilla and general "woody" flavors. There is a slight slight slight sour oak twang. Really very chewy and doughy like a slightly undercooked buttermilk biscuit. As it warms the iodine/sourness and alcohol emerge much more making this less drinkable. The "lager" malt bill and imperial level of alcohol leave the unbalanced ABV/style flaws more apparent as you reach the lower half of the bottle, this is best served at colder temperatures

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, which is something I was worried about due to the lager factor (I hate 95% of lagers I have tasted because they taste watery and stripped of flavor), but this one delivers. Plenty of carbonation as well which I also really enjoy and prefer compared to the flat, lifeless barrel-aged messes which are becoming far too common in today's craft beer industry.

Overall, I enjoyed this beer for the most part. I have not had a bad offering from Odell's barrel collection beers, but I greatly prefer the Woodcut No. 3 and the Deconstruction to this. From what I have read and experienced these Woodcut's need at least a year to settle/merge their flavors properly so I recommend this and any future offering only after aging to properly enjoy them at their peak. Another quality offering from Odell's barrel aging program although this is the first one I do not really "want/need" to revisit. Still quite good though.
