I really like marzen beers in general, but this one was just a touch less than what I was hoping to get. Maybe the oak barrel isn't the right one to use for this beer? Something was just not quite there, as I expected a heavier and sweeter marzen taste, but it almost was a bit diluted by the oak flavor. Still really good, but their base Oktoberfest beer is better.

Opened 9 year old Woodcut No. 4.
Poured with some froth that disappeared quickly. Sediment near the end of pour like many old beers.
Oak is the most noticeable smell.
Tastes like an oaky barley wine at this age. The Marzen character is still here, very sweet and thick. The finish is bitter, something that seems to happen to older beers like this.
There is still the feel of carbonation on the tongue. The beer is somewhat flat due to age, but not disappointing like other old beers I've opened.
Overall, it has aged well, but not my favorite of the woodcuts at this age.

Bottle courtesy of mulder1010. Shared at tasting. Transcribed from scrappy notes.
Bright blood orange with minimal saffron head.
Oaked strawberry, tart orange and grapefruit pith with very smart and perky woody edges.
Toffee apple, strawberry jam, tart citrus and spearmint in a sea of complex, cedary oak.
Medium with benign carbonation. Feels closer to 8 than 11%
Lovely stuff. Would never have guessed at the style, but arbitrarily adopting the nearest comparison of an oak-aged wild ale, it stands up very commendably. Only wish I'd had more than 4oz to enjoy.
