A Golden Ale created by blending the final recipe with its own barrel aged pilot beers fermented with wild yeasts. Each individual barrel contributes a unique flavor from the wood chosen and the cultures resident to achieve subtle complexities that develop(ed) over time. A beer which starts sweet, filling the mouth with fruit-like esters and a mild spiciness, changing to a tart and lingering flavor reminiscent of grapefruit living amidst an earthy, citrusy hop aroma. 750mL brown glass cork & caged bottle. No date that I can find.

Pours a rather clear amber orange with some sudsy off-white. Good retention. Nose is CRAZY dense and complex. Lots of orange, then lime, then barnyard funk, then freshly milled boards, then cream, then smoke, hay, tangerine, and cereal grains.

Palate is a lot more crisp then I expected. Lots of tangerine, wood, and some gooseberries. All this fades into something like key lime pie or lemon meringue. A little raspberry glaze too. Drying yeast finish.

Notes: Peculiar but very very tasty.

A: Bubbly and golden with a solid, thick head that's small but consistent; lacing sticks loosely to the sides of the glass

S: Peppery and funky on top of a grainy malt presence; alcohol is prevalent and so is the apple and pear fruitiness--a bit tart

T: Warm spiciness and a slightly sour fruitiness from the apple and pear presence; all on top of a earthy, grainy funkiness

F: Creamy and frothy--it sits beautifully on the tongue

D: This is a great beer but the high alcohol presence does become a bit tiring

A= The cork pops without much enthusiasm but the pour is beautiful. A nice hazy yellow color that turns amber in the deeper parts of my glass. The head is a thin white thing with some large soapy bubbles on it. It falls fast to a skin yet still leaves a little lacing on the side of the glass.

S= The smell is a tart white wine character similar to an unblended lambic. While searching for some of the oak and bourbon that I read on the bottle I do pull them out but if I hadn't known they would have likely gone unnoticed. I get a little "horse blanket" funk from it but it's a little hidden by the tart wine character.

T= The taste is very interesting. The funkyness comes through in a much more prominate way lending a lot less credit to the tart sourness. While the sour is there it is much more subdued. There is for sure a lot of brett taste in this one. I there is a good sweetness to it as well that sort of covers the tartness up too. I read in another review that it wasn't sour at all and while it's not sour it is a little tart. The wood goes unoticed in the taste as well as the bourbon. The white wine character stays but it is also much subdued.

M= Sort of that heavy lingering brett mouth on it. Hard to explain.

D= Pretty decent. I would buy another one of these to toss in the ol cellar for a while to see what it turns into. Worth trying and worth aging. A unique beer.

A: Hazy orange/amber color. Poured a 3 finger frothy white head with excellent retention to a 2 finger rocky cap. Decanted continually. Laced teh glass in sheets.

S: Grapes, light fruit and caramel. Very complex. Notes of wet wood and caramel. A little funk.

T: Loaded with flavors. Wine/grapes up front. Middle cluttered with caramel, oak, vanilla and light colored fruits. A light yeast funk.

M: Medium body. Ample carbonation. Very dry and warming finish with a little sweetness lingering.

D: Interesting and complex. definitely a sipper due to abv but masks it fairly well.

Poured into a tulip. Clear, golden body. 1 finger white head that holds around 1/4 finger.

Smell was complex. Some great sweetness with caramel and spices. A good amount of fruitiness. Hints of oak with a strong musty, funky presence of Brett.

Taste was all over the place..in a good way. White wine presence upfront that goes to a medium, caramel presence with notes of oak, vanilla, and a spiceness. Mild, fruity hop character. Strong Brett flavor. Notes of dark fruit and good presence of cherry. Mild roast flavor mixed in there as well.

Mouthfeel had a medium body, medium/high carbonation and a dry finish that turns to a stickiness.

Drinkability is not something I would want multiple pints of, but otherwise, its very drinkable. No signs of abv other than stickiness in finish.

Poured into duvel glass.

Pours 1/2 finger of off-white head. Color is a pale bronze hued gold.

Aroma: Bree up front with a big funk aroma. Wine like flavors with grapes. A nice amount of fruits. Apricots and mangoes. Very sweet fruits. I also get a bit of oak.

Taste: A brett funk flavor up front. Very barnyard-like. Lemon and hay flavors. The sweet fruits from the nose are muted a bit. It has some spice notes. It is slightly oaky. The brett funk really takes this beer over for young it is. It does have some earthy hops showing.

Mouthfeel: Funky and crisp. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends very funky/soured.

Overall, a pretty nice offering from Odell. A little bit slow drinking from the brett, but it is a nice funky beer. I didn't detect any bourbon at all which disappointed me a bit.

Golden and ale-like in appearance. Hazy, but nicely carbonated; a large white cap retains well, slowly settling to a half-inch cap.

Not much aroma - soapy, spicy, peppery. Some pear-like esters as it warms.

Taste is better than the aroma; semi-sweet pale malts meet banana and pear-like esters, white pepper, tannic oak, a touch of bourbon sweetness. There's a bit of cardboard-y oxidation mid-palate, and it finishes peppery and dry with a touch of alcohol. This is decent but underwhelming, for a beer with so many components it doesn't have much depth.

Poured a nice golden yellow color, topped off with a nice, billowy white head. I initially get a little funk in the nose, along with subtle wood, juicy pineapple and tart lemon. After reading about this beer, I was expecting some sourness, but none was apparent. Interestingly, to me at least, was that although I got some oakiness on the palate, I could not discern from among the advertised woods. A really nice, enjoyable and drinkable beer (esp. at 10.5%), but one I'm likely to purchase again at the price.

Another new 750 mL from Odell. I'll admit that $15 is a lot for a beer, especially an unknown, but it's a hellova lot easier to swallow than their $25 woodcut series.

Served cool into a NB globe (I hope nobody minds), Decontruction is a pale golden yellow-orange color with a slight haze. The head is slow to develop at first but then becomes a towering pillow of white fluffy goodness. It's very slow to settle.

Aroma is sweet and sour but mostly the former. There is a nice fruity quality that seems to be a lemon/grapefruit collaboration. A little bit of oakey chard comes through too. It's fresh and zesty - very refreshing.

Flavor is intense and unusual. It has great citrus in the same way as the aroma (lemons take a back seat to grapefruit here, though) and a nice sour/funk finish. Breaking it down, it's a great strong golden ale to start. I would love to try the base beer. Second, the oak is well-judged but that's coming from someone who really likes the subtle vanilla quality that comes from oak-aging. The bourbon is there but I never would guess that 1/5 of the final recipe came from a bourbon barrel. And finally, the wine barrel. I'd like to know what kind of wine was previously occupying these barrels but I hazard to say that it's more noticible than the bourbon and I enjoy that.

Mouthfeel is medium-light in body, crisp, easy drinking, and amazing that it could ever be over 10%. The alcohol is almost hidden away under all of those flavors. This is a summer strong ale if there ever was one.

Overall a fantastic and deeply enjoyable beer. More like these, please!

750ml bottle $15. I split this with a couple friends and I was surprised a little bit by the quality. The color was a nice yellow, (goldenrod?) with a tenacious head. The smell was a little bretty and a little lemony. The flavor was pineapple (which I get from brett sometimes), lemon, a little grass, it worked well. I'd like to see more of this type of thing from Odell as opposed to their overpriced woodcut series. Oh and this is not sour at all...

750 ml bottle. Very lively and overflows when corked. Pours a hazy golden amber with a huge creamy bubbly white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet tarty fruits with some funky earthy musty yeast, and some brett and acidic sourness.

The flavor is sweet malts and some appley fruits with some brett and funk and a little tart acidic sourness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an interesting beer. It's a little on the sweet side for me and I would prefer more brett and/or sourness. I don't get much barrel notes. It's still very good though.

Pours translucent gold with a poofy white head that recedes to a thin layer of white bubbles in my Brooklyn snifter glass. Pretty complex aroma with all sorts of things going on that I'm unable to fully describe. But there's an unmistakable lemon tartness, pineapple, oak, and apple. Flavor profile is a very nice, well rounded sweet and sour with those lightly tart, bretty fruit qualities balanced by sweet malt, and bourbon. Body is medium with fairly high carbonation. Brad noted in his review that this beer has a chameleon-like quality and I'd agree. A lot going on here and this beer straddles multiple lines.

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by this beer and may have to stock up on a few more.

Looks: clear pale dandelion yellow that deepens to a more hazy light tangerine. A two-finger, puffy off-white head sticks around for quite a while. It never really leaves, actually, becoming a small yet silky layer of film. The bubbles grip the sides of the glass with all their might, leaving big, fat walls of webbed lace.

Smells: delightfully tart. A nice brett character, balanced with oak, pine, sweet pineapples, white grapes, red apples, pears, and strawberries. It's almost like a pink starbust. The aroma strikes a perfect balance between tartness, sweetness and barrel-aging. I'm in love.

Tastes: like a better, more complex Belgian pale ale. The sour brett character is far more subdued than the nose would suggest, acquiescing instead to fruitier, sweet flavors of pears and white wine. However, there is a nice green apple tartness that grows a bit as I drink. The oak is barely noticeable, acting as a nice backbone to the sweeter flavors and spicy cloves.. The finish is ephemeral and interchangeable; at some times sweet, at others tart, at others dry.

Feels: Soft. Hard to hide alcohol in a 20-proof beer, as a bit of warmth travels down and into the chest. Fizzy, with medium carbonation. The medium body expands a bit and becomes more supple as I roll it over the tongue.

Drinks: like beauty in mathematics. With the plethora of flavors dancing about my palate, it's easy to forget that DeConstruction is a nearly 11% ABV beast. Two glasses and I was feeling mighty fine, while the beer was tasting equally exquisite. I love what Odell is doing with beer, taking experimental styles and ideas and applying them to the alcoholic world.

This beer really reminded me of the Gouden Carolus Cuvee van der keizer red. Tons of spice with some subtle fruity notes. It pours a golden honey color with amber highlights. Right after you pour it the nose is overwhelmed by the bourbon barrels but as it settles you pick up vanilla and baking spice. The palate followed suit with your intital taste be dominated by bourbon and heat but as it mellows you you get some lovely citrus and red fruit flavors. This beer overall was extremely complex and I swear the flavors changed with every sip.

A: The pour is a nice golden orange color with a nice big white head on it.

S: An absolutely incredible amount of citrus notes come through on the nose. Lots of sweet, juicy oranges, unlike anything I've smelled in a beer before. Notes of grapefruit and pineapple come through as well. A subtle Brettanomyces aroma, not all that funky, but a bit of earth. Some light spices too, especially white pepper.

T: The intense citrus quality continues on the palate. Lots of wonderful juicy oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, and some lemons. A much more pronounced tartness than the nose would let on, and only a subtle spice note.

M: The body is medium with plenty of tiny carbonation bubbles.

D: I was not really expecting too much from this beer and it really blew me away. A fantastic beer from Odell, who keep impressing me.

The story behind this beer is complicated, i interviewed Joe Mohrfeld, a brewer with Odell, about this beer for our email newsletter. Here is an excerpt:

"Each pilot beer is a Strong Golden Ale and, aside from the first one brewed back in fall 2009, has a similar malt and hop bill. That first beer, De Oogst or "The Harvest," was the pilot beer that we used to develop the base recipes we wanted and each subsequent beer followed in that vein. De Oogst is a hoppy 7% ABV Belgian-inspired Pale Ale with three different yeast strains (two Belgian and our House). Malts include Belgian and Pilsner. Hops used in the kettle include Gold and Tettnanger while Saaz is used in the Hopback.

For the second pilot beer, dubbed "Golden," we substituted Canadian Base Malt for the Belgian Malt to achieve a richer malt base as opposed to the drier malt profile in De Oogst. We did, however, keep the hops the same so you will still be able to enjoy the spicy floral Saaz hop character contributed from the generous hopback addition. More importantly, in January, we added bacteria (Lactobacillus and Pediococcus) and wild yeast (Brettanomyces) to the beer as it ages in a French Oak Cabernet Barrel in our barrel room.

The third pilot beer was aged in old steamed-out Bourbon barrels and one Cabernet barrel. Pilot #4 went into second-use Woodcut barrels.

Each pilot beer and the base beer underwent primary fermentation with both our house ale strain and one to two (of four) different Belgian yeast strains. For Pilot Beers #2 and #3, we inoculated those barrels with a local culture of wild yeast we refer to as our "Fester" strain. Fester was cultured from a Berliner style mash we created in our lab with our silo malt. Since wild yeast is essentially everywhere, we were able to culture it from right outside the brewery. After isolating Fester from other yeasts living in the small culture, we propagated it until we reached desired pitching quantities for each inoculation. Fester has proven to give us a uniquely tart, grapefruit-esqe sourness we have never had from any other wild yeast with which we have worked. It is quite pleasant in a strong, complex Golden Ale such as this. As an additional note, the Drie Fonteinen Brettanomyces strain was also used in the process for certain Pilot #2 and #3 barrels."

On to my review:

Peach colored body.

Aromas of bread, pineapple, this one is tough, so many vague dimensions, so much subtlety.

Starts sweet, green apple, latent acidity, pear, pineapple, spice, some herbal flavors. This beer is a chameleon, the beer equivalent of an ink blot. You could name virtually any flavor and someone would say it tastes like that. One of the most complex, hardest to pin down beers I have ever had.

Bottom line: excellent bottle. Not sure what else to say, but you have got to try it. Its got a little brett character and some acid, but I wouldn't call it a sour. A coworker was in shock when I said it was over 10%. Be careful!

I had this beer at Odell's tap room, as part of their co-pilot taster series. Quite a deal for what you get, if you ask me.

Anyway, in the three ounce or so glass that this beer was poured, sat a beautiful golden beer with a ton of carbonation bubbles zipping up and a nice, creamy head. Lacing was ultra thick down the sides of the glass. This was a pretty beer to look at.

Smell consisted mostly of oaky goodness with an afterhint of sour and brett and funky goodness. I didn't smell any hoppyness to the beer, but I didn't expect to anyway.

Taste was more pronounced on the sour and less on the oak. The sour was a lot of lacto upfront, with a strong backing of brett funk. Oak also showed up, as well as a good rounding of bitterness. The taste was awesome. I overheard many people at the tap room agreeing with me.

The mouthfeel is a bit light, with a strong, crisp, carbonic bite on the back of the trough. Alcohol also contributes to the sharpness of the beer, as well as the acidic sour nature. As such, I do need to mark it down a bit on mouthfeel. That being said, it is still quite drinkable for a 10.5% wild, oak aged, golden ale. I suggest it to anyone who gets the chance to try it.
