Sampled in CST, 12/8/2011. It pours a nice brown with ruby red highlights. The head is fluffy and large, retention and lacing are very pleasing.
The aroma is bursting with citrus hop flavor, well ahead of the roasted dark malts. Pineapple and mandarin oranges really make a statement for Colorado hops. The malt backing is there, but none too bold and somewhat funky. The hop bill is excellent, but the demeanor of the malt and lack of overall intensity, for a 9.5% beer, drag things down - albeit the alcohol is hidden very well.
That juicy citrus character from the nose holds true in the taste. Tropical fruits offer sweetness, balancing out the contrasting resiny grapefruit flavors. Now the malt begins to take on positive qualities, especially in the finish. Bitter coffee, a dash of chocolate, and some astringency keep the finish roasty and dry. I still think the malt profile is lacking a bit of spunk and identity.
The body is on the medium side, with a pretty fluffy texture. Carbonation is quite mild, adding just a slight tang, not to interrupt the pristine smoothness.
For the style, I don't think it stands up to it's counterparts on the West Coast. Yet, it's a style that lacks concrete ground rules, so difference of opinion should be vast. For me, I just don't think the flavor is as perfected as it could be from a quality brewery like Odell. A bit too messy IMO.
