Bottle says best by 2/16/12, which suggests it was bottled around 16 October 2011.
Pours dark coffee brown, nearly black in the glass, with a big frothy grayish tan head. Great retention and lacing. A good-looking beer.
For some reason I have a hard time detecting nuance in black IPAs. I get fruity hops - oranges, mostly. And dark roasted malts with a bit of char. They blend together quite well, making for a nice balance of smooth and sharp.
Taste is less to my liking. This is the side of this style of beer that just doesn't do it for me - totally dominated by what I see as the negative sides of both pieces. From the hops, I get bitterness. From the malts, I get charred or burnt grain. These don't totally overshadow the pleasant flavors, but they're way more prominent than I'd like them to be.
On the heavier and thicker side. Feels like a porter in the mouth, actually. Smooth and fluffy, with carbonation present mostly as a light froth in the mouth. I like it. Finish is quicker than I'd expect, mostly bitter but pulling out at just the right time.
I really like everything about this beer, except for the taste. It's just too much bitter and char and too little anything else. But the look, the feel, the smell are all so good! Is this really 9.5%? Yikes. Better stop at one. Not sure whether I want another one, anyway.
