Appearance: Black glass denies light even at the edges. Holds a thin ropey tan foam head that sticks to the sides of the glass.

Smell: Black IPA profile, heavy west coast hops with a toasted to burnt full base malt. Both knobs turned to 11.

Taste: The two monsters of malt and hop crash into and mostly dampen the other, leaving a strange, powerful balance. The hops eventually burn through the sweet barleywine strength malt and start a long, slow, oily burn that encourages the next sweet, extinguishing sip.

Feel: Prickly carbonation in a heavy beer, there's enough depth that it doesn't go fizzy, and goes a bit creamy. There is alcoholic heat, but it's just a spice in the hop oil numbing. A bit of a lip smacking chew.

Overall: Moar Kudos for Odell. MOAR ODELL!
A beast of a beer, but so much good flavor, if there's a flaw it is drowned out by the intensity of what's going on. This is like getting two beers, a roasted barleywine, and a super fresh IPA. If you like the style, this is a much try.

On draft at Whole Foods, Chandler, AZ.

Near black opaque body with a filmy beige head. Aromas of pine, chocolate, roast. Lovely balance. I'm not typically a of fan of black IPAs, but this is certainly noteworthy. Bitter chocolates and resinous hops. Silky mid palate finishing with some bitter chocolate and hop notes. Well done.

Poured into a snifter from a 12 ounce bottle.

A- Massive frothy oatmeal-colored head with a pitch-black body. 4.5

S- Piney and resinous and citrusy up front. There's a sweet, vanilla-like and almost rye-like aroma deeper in. It's big aroma. 4.5

T- Deeply resinous, piney and then faintly citrusy, the hops by no means take the back seat here. At the finish I get a dry dark roast flavor and maybe even a tinge of coffee. 4

There's some hop bite on this, but it still manages a creamy, medium-bodied mouthfeel. The finish has a mild bitterness and dryness that works quite well. 4.25

I probably should go buy a few more 4-packs before I can't find this on shelves any longer and kick myself for it. This is a damn good beer.
