Poured from 12oz bottle into Unibroue tulip. Best by date of 5/10/12

Appearance: Pours a very, very dark brown, almost pitch black color, with two fingers of off-white/tan head, that seems to be staying around for awhile, as well as leaving some very nice lacing.

Smell: Tons of dark chocolate, and coffee/espresso notes coming in hard here. A slight hop floral smell, as well as a bit of alcohol spice.

Taste: Upfront you get a nice bit of hop bitterness, and spice. As it moves towards the back of the mouth, you get a lot of the chocolate, and coffee notes. Finishes up with some more bitterness from the hops, as well as some slight alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel: Thick and creamy, almost RIS like.

Overall: Fantastic brew in the Black IPA category, which happens to be one of my favorite styles. And this one ranks right up there with the best of this style.

Had on tap at Bitter Creek in Boise. Dark coffee in color with a small mocha head that did not lace the glass much. Low in carbination, but a nice hop burst and with eyes closed it is easy to imagine the beer as an amber color. With eyes open you can taste a little coffee bitterness. The alcohol is well hidden, and the hops are relatively mild- I really enjoyed this- as did my wife who is not much for hoppy beer.

Tasty and well-made like everything Odell does, should appeal plenty to fans of this somewhat divisive style. Does a great job of balancing roasted notes with vivid pine and citrusy grapefruit hops; good bitterness that doesn’t overwhelm the other flavors; very low sweetness and alcohol presence. Looks the part, with a nearly black body and a fluffy tan head, strong retention and lace. The nose matches with the taste; roasted malt and piney hops emerge clearly.

Body is medium, not too thin, carbonation just a touch below medium, with nice life on the tongue and a smooth, slightly creamy feel. Lingering aftertaste is bitter but not over long or aggressive; the roastiness, grapefruit peel, and pine resins dissipate slowly, giving you something to remember as they fade. The alcohol, while packing a punch, isn’t noticed in the taste much, if at all.

Poured an almost complete black, with 2 fingered head that slowly recedes into a few caps.

Aroma is citrus and pine hops with chocolate covered coffee beans.

Taste is more of the same - balanced citrus and pine hops, with chocolate and coffee stout flavors. Very good balance between IPA qualities and stout qualities. Nailed it.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Could use some more thinkness, but thin body does not reflect alcohol, which is refreshing. Given ABV I would expect a lot more alcohol character with the thin body...but not present.

Very good "double" BIPA. Plenty of hop character and plenty of stout character. Neither one overwhelming.

12 ounce bottle carefully poured into my Schlafly tulip.

A - Pours a very dark, opaque, black/brown with a nice, frothy, off-white 1 1/2 finger head. Dissipated slowly and left a 1/4" cap throughout. Nice lacing on the way down. Beautifully dark red hue when held up to light.

S - Very complex blend of American hops and malt backbone. You get the piney, fruity, citrusy aromas of a DIPA, but also the beautiful toasted and chocolately aromas from the dark malts. A wonderfully smelling brew.

T & M - Same as the taste - complex, smooth, nicely hopped but not bitter. Malt backbone is very apparent and shines through loud and clear. 9.5% alcohol is well hidden, even as it warms.

Overall - I haven't been disappointed with O'Dell yet, and this is yet another notch in their belt. Along with Myrcenary, they brew 2 of my all-time favorite beers. Highly recommended.

Sampled on 3-18-12
Best before 3-27-12

Appearance: a very dark brown color, completely opaque with a tan head that bubbles away quickly, leaving behind a dense ring of tan lacing.

Smell: deep, dark malt up front yields to a light citrus hop aroma. Light and subtle, but also deep and complex. Very good.

Taste: a complete combination of smoky malt and fruity hops. Both ends are well represented, without dominating the flavor. The finish is lightly sweet with the perfect amount of bitterness. The alcohol is completely imperceptible. Outstanding.

Mouthfeel: perfect thickness for the malty flavors and thinner on the finish to let the hops show through.

Overall: Maybe the best example of a black IPA I've ever had. Not the most intense beers ever made, just extremely well crafted.

Poured into a Nonic pint glass two weeks before the best by date.

A - Pours dark chocolate brown - nearly black, opaque with two finger khaki head. As the head recedes it leaves creamy lacing along the sides and thins to a creamy thick 1/4 inch head with in minutes.

S - Pleasant floral hop aroma dominates. Roasted malt goodness is detectable, but the american hop profile is the star.

T - A wonderful balance of american hop (floral/citrus) and chocolate and caramel malts. A Few drinks in the 9.5% alcohol begins to peak out, but not in an entirely unpleasant way - more warming sensation with the roasted malts.

M - Comfortably in the medium body range with creamy texture and a slight bite of hops, well balanced mouthfeel with a lingering creamy coating on the tongue.

O - One of the better beers I've had recently and certainly a top contender for the Odell brews. I bought this because I've always been happy with the Odell stuff and this certainly has not let me down. This is the first I've tried Double Black IPA and I hope all other examples are equally delicious in this style.

Pours dark black with a two finger light tan head with good retention and sheets of lacing. The aroma has the strong scent of grapefruit, with some pineapple and pine. This smells like it is going to be very good.

The taste is just like the aroma. Grapefruit, pineapple, and pine. What a wonderful combination. Sweet, bitter, and hoppy. Just the way I like a DIPA to be, except this is a black IPA, or ABA, which tastes just like a fantastic example of an Imperial IPA. It's amazing what the good people at Odell are capable of.

Medium bodied with perfect carbonation. The alcohol is well disguised. I never would have guessed this has an abv of 9.5%. If you haven't tried this beer yet, please go purchase some. You won't be sorry that you did.

12oz, bottle courtesy of SalukiAlum, thanks Steve.

Dark brown with garnet flashes in the highlight. Mocha tan head with good retention and beautiful lacing on the glass. Perfect.

Light roast and coffee but dominated with grapefruit and bright pine hops. Very bright in contrast to the dark malts. Could be more floral but very nice.

Roasted coffee with a good blend of chocolate and caramel sweetness, equally balanced as powerful citrus hops come rolling in. Grapefruit, pine and pineapple, with a bit of acidity and bitterness on the end. Alcohol well hidden.

Adequate carbonation with surprisingly light body for the color. Does well for the drinkability. A bit acidic in some places but wouldn't change anything.

A well done beer that shows quality and depth. Well balanced and highlights a very bright hop profile while featuring Colorado grown products. Glad this is now available in 12oz.

Pours a tan head. Color is a deep brown.

Aroma: a little chocolate roast and caramel. Hop resiny. Grapefruit citrus and floral hops.

Taste: Citrus and hop resin juiciness. A little roast and coffee. Caramel. Chocolate. The maltiness is minimal. Grapefruit and pineapple. Surprisingly hoppy.

Mouthfeel: Sticky, yet roasty. Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Ends sticky.

Overall, this is actually a solid black ipa. Very hoppy. The malt and roast is minimal so it doesn't take away from the hops. I like it.

While I really couldn't imagine saying a negative word about Odell, this beer does not compare to Sublimely Self Righteous. There, that is as negative as I can get. What a lovely, deliciously hoppy brew! Another wonderful job by our friends up in Fort Collins!
