A big thanks to ArrogantB for this great extra.

Appearance – Pours a dark black into a tulip with half a finger of tan head that dissipates quickly leaving nice lacing.

Smell – Bitter hops, roasted malts, pine, earth, and floral notes.

Taste – Pine, cascade, floral notes, slight citrus, and heavy roasted malts.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

Overall – A decent black ale, though not my first choice. Glad I was able to try it.

A - Basically black in color. No real head to speak of, only slight collar. Does provide some moderate lacing.

S - Sticky, piney hops, with a light floral aspect. Sweet dark malts show up as well.

T/M - Mild roastiness. Resinous pine bite. Almost no sign of being about 10%. Light to medium body with just the right amount of carbonation.

O - Glad I picked some up, but it's gonna be hard to pass up their other offerings for this.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Opaque black color with one finger of diminishing light beige foam head. Light lacing remains.

S: Piney and slightly fruity, the smell is distinctly dark with refined malt that suggests sweetness. Yeast influences seem minimal in the smell, and alcohol is not detected.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with intense piney hop aromatics and mild roasted malt. Acidity is intensely carbonic, causing a rift between the beginning and middle. It sweetens somewhat in the middle where transient honey can be found. This beer finishes moderately bitter and also at its most roasty, drying out to the greatest extent yet. No alcohol is detected.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, intensely acidic on the palate, with brisk carbonation.

D/O: This high-test black IPA from O'Dell's is tolerable but not really noteworthy.Hops are one-note pine delivered at the starting gun, while rampant acidity represents the single greatest detriment. In a field of hoppy offerings from this brewery, it would be difficult to return to this one any time soon--the IPA and (especially) Myrcenary are both so much better.

Pours very dark brown, almost black with a massive rocky tan head that leaves sheets of lacing.

Aroma is roasted dark grain, chocolate, and musty hop.

Taste is a little lighter than expected. Roasted dark grain up front. Chocolate and dark fruit make an appearance. Finishes with a slight bitterness and lingering chocolate sweetness.

Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied. A thicker feel would be appreciated.

Overall a little too much on the sweet side for a black IPA. Plenty of chocolate sweetness.

Poured a nice deep black with ruby highlights and a thick and creamy head.

The smell is surprisingly sweet and malty with just a light bit tropical hops and a bit of lightly smokey roasted barley.

The flavor is more malt dominated than I would expect for this style. Sweet malts and light roasty malts dominate with just a light herbal hop prescence. Some nice chocolate flavors come through as well.

The mouthfeel is light and resiny.

Strange Black IPA, drinks more like a slightly hoppy big porter.

nice dark coloration which glows a deep brown on the edges when held to light...light toffee one finger head - smell is lightly roasty and nutty, but you have to work your sniffer pretty hard to discern anything - flavors of sweetness, bitterness, hops, and roasted malt are well balanced - mouthfeel is a bit light and lacks some of that enamel ripping hoppiness that I like, but not too light - overall, a solid brew...this is a tought style to nail, but when done right, can be a beautiful thing. an excellent offering from Odell!

12oz picked up today at the COOP .... Poured into my new CBS snifter.. 1" dark tan head atop deep dark brown brew... verging on black... nice sheets of lacing.

Nose is very nice... big citrus and a little pine.. some lite chocolate and a touch of sweetness.

Good bitterness up front.. resinous hops and a little sweet dark malt... the malts are more roasty black than chocolaty.. a little sweetness with warmth that helps bloom the flavors....

Body is a solid medium with good carbonation.

Glad we got this one in and am even happier I was able to try it fresh.

Chocolatey brown in color with a thin tan head that looks creamy and clings to the glass nicely.

Big juicy citrus hop scent on the nose along with a touch of milk chocolate sweetness.

Whoa, big flavor here. Lots of tropical fruit and citrus from the hops up front. Not to be outdone, the malt adds sweetness and plenty of chocolate. A nice little flow of fruits to blend with chocolatey goodness. A touch of bitterness on the palate in the aftertaste.

Very smooth. Not sticky at all. The carbonation is creamy and soft. Great feel.

This could very well be my favorite beer for the style. Tons of flavor from hops to malt. A nice balance of both in fact. Great beer.

12oz bottle from a four-pack that cost $10.49. Black color, mocha head, looks good. Smell is hoppy citrus but I was disappointed after hearing this compared to Pliny (lies). Flavor is decently hoppy but again not on the level of Stone 15th. The roast flavor really conflicted with the citrus, like oranges dunked in bitter coffee. I would have preferred chocolate covered oranges but oh we'll. Still, this is a decent beer and a much better value than when it was in 750's.

Deep brown body. Almost black with a very brown hue. Thin lacy mocha head.

Nice mix of hop and malt to the aroma. Good resiny floral hop. Malty cocoa sweetness comes through in waves.

Sweet dark chocolate malt hits the same time as a bit of pine. Followed by a tinge of grapefruit and a hit of resiny hop. There's a bit of burnt roasty malt flavor and a little molasses before a nice finishing bitterness sets in.

Chewy smooth body. Nice carbonaton with the alcohol very well hidden behind very solid flavors. No complaints with this one for me. Odell keeps em' coming.

appearance - black with murky auburn brown edges. nice semi tan head with great retention and lacing. super sticky on the sides, just beautiful.

smell - wow, fresh hops (smells like dank ass weed). then i have to dig to get some dark malts, walnut shell and caramel.

taste - quite mild when cold, i like it, roasted malts, fruity hops. simple but nice.

mouthfeel - bitterness sticks around a bit which is funny cause it didnt seem bitter upfront. sugary and bitter, eh. good body and great carbonation...this is also really fresh.

2011 vintage

A-Pours a jet black with some slight scarlet edges
that supports two fingers of dense,light-tan foam. The head showed good retention and deposited sticky ribbons of lacing on the glass.

S-Really pungent, fruity hop nose.Concentrated tropical fruit, tangerine, apricot, milk chocolate covered pineapple, sweet and perfumey floral hops similar to jasmine and mild coffee.

T-Punchy with great fruity hop bitterness and a supporting but nonaggressive chocolate/coffee character.Sweetened grapefruit,musky,tropical fruit(pineapple,mango),bright citrus,mild roast,sweetened coffee,slight pine and some fresh hop qualities(raw,leafy).

M-Medium bodied with a slick feel and bitter finish.Hop forward example of the style but the roastiness was there just understated.Kind of reminded me of a roasty Myrcenary(which is a good thing).A touch thin would be my only knock.

O-A seriously worthwhile ABA/Black DIPA.I will definitely be purchasing more.

12 oz into a pint

A - Thick and hazy - lots of body to this beer. Brown with a few amber highlights. Not really all that black except in the thickest parts. Head formation is thick and creamy, mocha in color.

S - Mega hoppy smell, lots of citrus and piney, a little bit zingy. No malts, this is DIPA first and black second. Really spicy overall.

T - Lots of citrus flavors from the mega hop backbone. Mid-stream develops alot of graininess, hoppiness and even a really solid bitterness. Finishes with just a little bit of maltiness, the black roast coming through.

M - Full bodied, thick and even a little bit creamy. Alcohol warmth is well hidden.

O/D - A good BIPA. I think its a bit of a IPA that just happens to be black colored, but I certainly see the aim of trying to bring in more roast balance. Well worth a shot.

Thick head with heavy lacing. As black as you might assume from the name.

Smells of fresh grassy and citrusy hops with roasted malts holding them all together.

Flavor is foreshadowed by aroma. Dark malts try to provide a sturdy structure for the flavoring and bittering hops that punch through the entire time. Some brown sugar sweetness begins showing itself as the brew warms up. For a 9.5 ABV, the alcohol is well disguised by the hop-forward tongue.

The feel of the beer is a bit peculiar, but it works pretty damn well. It has a creamy body but doesn't seem nearly as thick as I would have guessed. Still, the creamy body covers the bitter hops to near perfect, only improving as it warms up.

I like this beer alot. I wouldn't want more than one a night, but it's tasty. I was completely shocked to see this was 9.5 % alcohol. This style of beer still kind of eludes me, but it's growing on me - many thanks to this brew.
