look: 4.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 3.5

A: Dark dark brown, with a foamy off white head with great retention. Very big bands of frothy lacing.

S: Dank, wet hops. Pine and a bit of citrus hops. A hint of chocolate and a bit of sweet, dark fruit like malts. More than anything, it reminds me of a damp forest after it rains.

T: Pine and citrus hops up front. A bit of toasted malt and some malt sweetness. Finishes with a bit of sweetness and some citrus hops. Surprisingly not that flavorful for being 9.5%

M: Medium to fuller body. A lot thicker than I thought it would be. Very smooth and velvety mouthfeel.

O: Not my favorite black IPA. Not bad by any means, just wasn't doing much for me. ABV is pretty well hidden though. But I don't think I would drink this again.

A - Pours pitch black with three finger brown sugar colored head.

S - Citrus, pine, orange. Faint chocolate malt.

T - Starts out with a bitter chocolate followed by a wave a piney, citrus hops.

M - Medium with average carbonation.

O - This beer is like riding a roller coaster. First it's malty, then it's hoppy, then it's malty again. I love it. Like a stout and IPA rolled into one. The 9.5 abv is not apparent. This beer is dangerously drinkable. Another great brew from Odell.

Pours a nice deep dark brown, some wispy head that fades to a scattering of clouds on the surface. Smells like roast and citrus in harmony, with a bit of pine. The taste is not a balance, citrus forward with a bitter backbone that enhances the bitters in the roast. Roast flavor is mild, subdued, abd overall this seems to disappear from the palate with a wink. Mouth is right, and this drinks easy, just lacking in the lasting department.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours black, a nice big head that just floats on the beer, nice lacing, the head retention is off the charts

Smell is a little subtle for such a dark beer but roasted malts mostly

Taste - Expected it to be more malt forward but was pleasantly surprised to find out that the hops showed up in force with a nice roasted malt flavor as well.

Mouthfeel was nice, not too carbonated, not too thick.

Overall - a really balanced Black IPA but imo not big enough to boast double in the title. None the less this is a very solid beer and a great example of the style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Darkness snifter.

It produced a very dense, light khaki, 2-finger head. Superb retention from a head that never quite goes away, and some fine lacing. Poured a near black, that only let a bit of light through at the edges.

Everything I've come to expect from a strong Black Ale. Roasted malt competing with piney hops and a solid boozy backbone.

There seem to be malty Black Ales and hoppy Black Ales, and this is of the malty variety. The initial clash of hops and malt is won by the malt The hops lend an overall dryness, that lingers throughout, but roasted and caramel malt is dominant in the middle. A touch of alcohol, but not as much as I was expecting from the 9.5%.

You would think this would be heavier than it actually is. There is modest, but adequate, carbonation, and the dry finish aids in it's drinkability.

Overall this is a well balanced and drinkable, strong, Black Ale. It lacks the complexity and sheer amount of flavor for me to justify it being a "Double", but it is damn smooth for the level of flavor and alcohol. A solid example of the style. Cheers!

12 oz bottle from my four pack. thank you to my friend at quail creek for saving for me!

A- very dark almost black with a slight red hue. good tan head and lacing

S- big wet hops is the first thing i get. then some chocolate and dark fruits like plum come though for me.

T- Dam this is good! super clean hops with nice malt back. fruit comes though as it warms a little.

M- really good, not to thin but not super thick either

O- I love this beer. so happy odell put this into four packs this year. you would never know this beer is 9.5% ABV by drinking it! possibly deadly in the wrong hands (mine included lol)

A big thanks to ArrogantB for this great extra.

Appearance – Pours a dark black into a tulip with half a finger of tan head that dissipates quickly leaving nice lacing.

Smell – Bitter hops, roasted malts, pine, earth, and floral notes.

Taste – Pine, cascade, floral notes, slight citrus, and heavy roasted malts.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

Overall – A decent black ale, though not my first choice. Glad I was able to try it.

A - Basically black in color. No real head to speak of, only slight collar. Does provide some moderate lacing.

S - Sticky, piney hops, with a light floral aspect. Sweet dark malts show up as well.

T/M - Mild roastiness. Resinous pine bite. Almost no sign of being about 10%. Light to medium body with just the right amount of carbonation.

O - Glad I picked some up, but it's gonna be hard to pass up their other offerings for this.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Opaque black color with one finger of diminishing light beige foam head. Light lacing remains.

S: Piney and slightly fruity, the smell is distinctly dark with refined malt that suggests sweetness. Yeast influences seem minimal in the smell, and alcohol is not detected.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with intense piney hop aromatics and mild roasted malt. Acidity is intensely carbonic, causing a rift between the beginning and middle. It sweetens somewhat in the middle where transient honey can be found. This beer finishes moderately bitter and also at its most roasty, drying out to the greatest extent yet. No alcohol is detected.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, intensely acidic on the palate, with brisk carbonation.

D/O: This high-test black IPA from O'Dell's is tolerable but not really noteworthy.Hops are one-note pine delivered at the starting gun, while rampant acidity represents the single greatest detriment. In a field of hoppy offerings from this brewery, it would be difficult to return to this one any time soon--the IPA and (especially) Myrcenary are both so much better.
