On-tap at the brewery, psyched to try this one. This is what makes Odell one of my favorite breweries - quality, consistent, classic American craft styles, and then the adventurous side that cultures a local wild yeast and brews a barrel aged beer with it. Here we go...pours a garnet amber hue with a thin dose of white bubbles. Mostly big and malty with the barrel notes poking through...caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, wood, earthy hop flavor. Here comes the yeast...musty basement, moldy wood, ripe tropical fruit (all subtle flavors, mind you). Really interesting and remarkable considering the unpredictable nature of culturing your own yeast, but it doesn't quite come together as a fully realized product. Kudos on the experimentation and keep pushing the edge.

i love wild ales, and this one is pretty good. i guess some of the bottles were no good as the guy pouring at the brewery dumped a few out before he deemed one suitable to serve. it pours dark amber to indian brown with a short creamy tan head thats amazingly thick and sticks around the whole time. smell is pretty out there, dark fruits, funky yeast, and a complex malt body. flavor is carried by the yeast, which is peppery at first and then mellow and fruity, with a touch of brett like sourness to it. other flavors are tart cherries and oak. there is a lot gong on in this brew. feel isnt bad, perhaps a little thick and heavy in the body, a bomber would be a lot of this. good alcohol kick as well, and good carbonation. overall its not my favorite odell brew, but its a damn fine wild ale.

Arrives from the tap with a lightly amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark amber color that shows a mostly clear, nice amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a definite Brettanomyces signature to it, with lots of cured plastic and medicinal phenolics to it. In fact this dominates the aroma of the beer, if you pay attention though there is some brown bread malt character to this beer as well as some dried hay like grain notes and perhaps a touch of wholesome caramelized grain character. After some time some over-ripe cheese notes and a touch of muskiness starts to be noticeable in the nose as well. A touch of tartness accentuates a general fruitiness that suggest of plums and perhaps ripe figs.
Somewhat full bodied, the beer isn’t overly heavy, but definitely sticks to the palate with a viscous quality to it; this ends up being a definite sipping beer. The beer tastes somewhat tart, malty (in a toasted malt / biscuit malt / crystal malt like way), funky and somewhat fruity. Specific flavors of curing plastics, ample white pepper, spicy oak, a fresh-cut-plank woodiness, a fair amount of brown bread character, definite English biscuit character, lightly tart plums, a touch of sour date notes. A touch of buttery oak character mixes with some musky, sort of dried sweat and cheesiness in the finish. The tart plum notes at times have a rich, almost concentrated plum character to it, this can seem layered by a caramelized / brown sugar / sort of complex grain-fruitiness (if that last makes sense).
This beer is markedly more complex that the New Belgium Kick and Clutch that I have had recently, but this beer is evidence that complexity isn’t always the best thing to strive for; it doesn’t achieve the integrated whole that a really great beer needs to, but having said that, this is certainly not a bad beer. It has a bit too much phenolic character, this can be a bit distracting at time, though if you are used to these flavors this beer can be fairly enjoyable. This is definitely a beer I would have to be in the mood for. I am not quite sure that I am there right now. As the beer warms up it smells more tart than it actually is in the flavor; this beer really could use a more substantial sourness as a strong lactic component would help to integrate the rampant funkiness and mute the ample malt character. In the end I would describe this as a substantially Brett influenced, malty, strong Amber ale; and, it really is actually pretty decent.

750ml bottle. Pours a reddish amber with no carbonation. :(
The aroma is earthy brett and fruits with some wood and tea-like spices.
The flavor is sweet fruits and funky brett with a little tart sourness and someastringent tea spicing. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with no carbonation.
Overall, bottles are known to be hit or miss in terms of carbonation - unfortunately this one was a miss. This is amazing when it's good. Draft version is great. Odell did a voluntary recall of bottles, but I kept my 2 becuase I liked the beer.
