Notes/Commercial Description:
Not quite a stout but definitely no lightweight, Cutthroat Porter is smooth and robust. Inspired by the classic London porters, we use dark roasted malts to create a deep, rich color and flavor that hint at chocolate and coffee. We named it Cutthroat Porter as our tribute to the Colorado state fish – with its own rich heritage and unmistakable dark coloring. And while we’re big fans of small batches, here’s to the currently threatened Cutthroat population reaching mass quantities.

Appearance: Pours dark brown with almost 2 fingers of tan head. When held up to light there is some nice deep ruby around the edges. The head reduces down to minimal lacing.

Smell: Dark roasted malts, nuttiness, burned molasses and brown sugar are all prevalent. Also some chocolate and coffee in there too.

Taste: Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee blend together well to give this beer a great backbone and some nice bitterness. Some nuttiness and molasses follows, with the slightest amount of hops at the end. Classic, rich porter taste.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied, super smooth and creamy. This beer really had a great mouthfeel and it felt good going down. It doesn't seem too heavy which contributes a lot to the drinkability. Great example of a porter and one I would absolutely try again.

Cellared for 24 months and pours black with a two fingers of ecru head. The aroma is rich with notes of coffee and sweet malt. There is a little astringency on the nose as the fizzy head reduces. The body is thin with and the flavors are A-typical. Great coffee notes and bittersweet chocolate. The flavors are great and the aromas are great teasers; the body is just a little shy of great. This is a good sessionish beer at 4.8%, I just can't get over the thin character.

12oz bottle. Label states 4.8% abv. Pours into my glass a deep dark brown with a tight bubbly light tan cap on top. Aromas begin with roasted, lightly smoky malts. A touch of cocoa and some black coffee are in there along with a little dark fruit and a slight caramel.

First sip brings a roasted dark malt upfront with a touch of burnt smokiness. Cocoa and coffee flavors intermingle with some dark fruits as well. A light citrus hop is there on the finish as well as enough bitterness to cut through the semi sweet malt.

Mouthfeel is smooth and easy drinking with a nice punch of carbonation. Not an extremely robust porter, but a tasty one all the same that goes down easy. Yet another solid brew from Odell. Too bad this isn't available around me, but if it is around you grab some when you're in the mood for a porter!

Close to pitch black, but when held to the light shows through with some brown and garnet highlights. Thick tan head on top, reduced to a thin layer of tight foam. Nice lacing coats the glass.

Dark toasted malts dominate with plenty of dark coffee. A touch of bittersweet chocolate as well. Some fainting sweet malt hints come in as well.

Flavor is good, but lacks something. Chocolate and dark toasted malts again. Nothing is really in the finish though. A bit simple for me.

Mouthfeel is really good though, except for a bit too much carbonation. Makes this porter sharp tasting. Besides that this one has a nice creaminess to it.

Good drinkability, it has a lot of high points to it, but just lacks in the taste department. I'd gladly have a couple in a sitting though.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. It has a frothy light beige head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet chocolate and some burnt coffee.

The flavor is sweet chocolate malts and some burnt roastiness with a touch of fruitiness and a little lactose. It has a lightly bitter coffee finish. It's medium bodied with a good amount of velvety carbonation.

Overall, this is a well balanced porter - maybe a tad on the sweet side. This is a great fall back beer that I find myself drinking often.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle with a bottling date in the bottom left hand corner of the label. Label has a blurb about the beer.

Appearance: Black as night with a wispy lace yet a small cake of foam forms in the middle, good retention as the lace sticks to the glass.

Smell: Roasted aromas, creamed lightly sweet coffee. Toasted and roasted malt mix yet more roasted than toasted.

Taste: Impressively smooth mouth feel with a medium to full body. Rich roasted flavour going borderline astringent. Hops tingle all throughout the mouth with a vague bitterness that gets clouded by more everlasting lingering roasted malt with caramel undertones though still leaves a trail of earthy minty flavour to the finish. Roasted flavours are not over bearing but at a perfect level of balance with hints of light charcoal and over caramelized sugar.

Notes: Profound in character, Odell’s was aiming for the middle ground between Porters and Stouts … good stab at it. A more than decent Porter it is, I’m quite fond of this palatable brew.

On tap at Barley’s. Some floral and citrus hops with roasted malts. Vary dark brown to black. Full, lasting, tan head, with good lace. Light roast flavor. Little bitterness. Fruity. Pretty thin. I think this is supposed to be a robust porter. Somthing is wrong. I may re-rate some day.

12 ouncer allowed to warm up for about 30 minutes, "070209" etched by a computer on the label. Best before dating? Pours dark dark brown, near black with some dark ruby highlight shining through the gloom. Dark tan head, creamy, frothy and then down to a tiny bubble film and leaving splattered strands and fine spots of lace after a bit more then a gentle swirl. The nose is the first highlight for me. Rich notes of dark chocolate are noted in prominence. Full flavor porter, more chocolate noted on the tongue, along with dark malts, and then a moderate drying hop presence late. Smooth on the tongue. Very enjoyable brew. Nice job here by Odell.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Very dark reddish-brown with thin tan head and not very much lacing.

Smell: Mostly molasses and milk chocolate, with light roasted character and some spicy hops. Smells bitter and dry.

Taste: The taste follows the smell, with an emphasis on chocolate and molasses. The roasted malts and bitter hops build throughout and become more apparent at the finish.

Feel: Moderately low carbonation, body is not very full but is extremely smooth and creamy. Actually, the smoothness is unheard of for an under 5% abv beer (my bottle says 4.8%). Dry finish.

Drinkability: Great example of an everyday, sessionable Porter that relies more on a smooth overall balance than going the overly roasted route. While not one of my absolute favorite Porters, this may be the most drinkable one I have ever had. Another winner from Odell.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark blackish brown with a little bit of reddish/orange color at the bottom of the glass. Lots of bubbles and a huge five finger beige head with good retention. Lots of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A pretty big roasty aroma. Dark roasted malts with good hints of chocolate, coffee, burnt caramel, toffee, and some nuts. A little brown sugar, milk, and some light dried dark fruit. Very roasty aroma overall with a little bit of smoke. pretty solid.

Taste: Roasty and dark like the smell indicates. Dark roasted malts with notes of chocolate, coffee beans, nuts, milk, smoke, and burnt caramel and toffee. A little brown sugar and molasses. Very subtle hint of dark fruit. Some earthy hops provide some balancing bitterness in the back end. Very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy. Slick and very smooth.

Overall: A very good take on the American style Porter. Nicely roasty and robust while still going down pretty smooth and easy.

A 12oz bottle with a date of October 2011 - I assume this is the BB date, so it's a bit old. Oh well. Picked up from my local beer specialist. I love the artwork on the label.

Poured into a Delirium chalice. An exceptionally dark brown hue that looks black as night. Produces an impressive head of creamy light brown foam with great retention; this slowly reduces to a surface layer. Leaves behind evidence of bottle conditioning. Aroma of rich roasted malt with a spicy quality. Hints of burnt grain, coffee, cocoa, brown sugar, aromatic hops and yeast.

Tastes of roasted malt with with a dry, malty bitterness. Notes of burnt grain, dark malt, coffee, dry yeast and subtle stewed hops. A lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with fantastic body. Pretty astringent. Aftertaste of bitter roasted malt.

Excellent - a superb porter. The balance and body are fantastic; the roasted malt flavour and bitterness seem perfectly tuned. Lovely beer - grab one if you come across it.
