Notes/Commercial Description:
Not quite a stout but definitely no lightweight, Cutthroat Porter is smooth and robust. Inspired by the classic London porters, we use dark roasted malts to create a deep, rich color and flavor that hint at chocolate and coffee. We named it Cutthroat Porter as our tribute to the Colorado state fish – with its own rich heritage and unmistakable dark coloring. And while we’re big fans of small batches, here’s to the currently threatened Cutthroat population reaching mass quantities.

Odell, Odell. Let's see if you put too many hops in this beer as well.

Appearance (4) : This beer pours a foamy beige head about three fingers tall. The body is chocolate brown/roast coffee black in appearance, sitting at about 90% opacity. The foam head leaves rings of lace as it descends into a 2 finger stationary.

Aroma (3.75) : Some roast chocolate coffee bean, a little gunpowder, actually a lot of gunpowder...and some charred wood notes in there too. Bouquet is weak, it takes a lot to snort this one into my brain's signal pathway.

Taste (3.25) : A little malt but as usual these guys f**k it up by putting too many hops in their vat. Hop bomb with roasted bean.

Yeah...let's try to be constructive. Beyond the grassy wall of hop there's some light roasted coffee flavors and light licks of roasted malt on the finish. The hop dryness comes back with authority and lays itself on your tongue after the swallow. Belches come up tasting like a Pale Ale. Not cool, guys.

Mouthfeel (3.75) : About average for a porter, it's within spec. Light-to-medium bodied, mildly creamy, with a touch of zing for carbonation. Buzzing underneath the tongue.

Overall (3.42) : I've gone from being really optimistic with whatever Odell has to offer, to pretty much hating them. No, I gave them a fair shake. Just read my reviews. I've tried half a dozen, if not more, of their beers, and only one (Comes and Gose) have I really honestly enjoyed. All of their beers are hoppy beyond the style, and ruin it for me. My philosophy is that hops are great for balance, except in pale ales where they SHOULD override the malt. Odell just applies that pale ale method to every beer they brew. So a porter? Imagine a porter with pale hops. A stout? Imagine a stout with pale hops. Just imagine any beer, and add a dump truck of hops to it. It's really frustrating unless you are a hop head.

For me? A sucky porter.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a ruby highlighted, brown to black coloring, with a foamy, fluffy, clingy, tan head. Nose of bitter coffee forward, with a cream and cocoa highlight, and hints of roasted notes. Flavors of bitter roast coffee, chocolate highlights, roasted notes, and hints of char. Dry, smooth bodied, with a roasted and bittersweet aftertaste. Dry, smooth finish. Extremely easy to drink.
