Notes/Commercial Description:
Not quite a stout but definitely no lightweight, Cutthroat Porter is smooth and robust. Inspired by the classic London porters, we use dark roasted malts to create a deep, rich color and flavor that hint at chocolate and coffee. We named it Cutthroat Porter as our tribute to the Colorado state fish – with its own rich heritage and unmistakable dark coloring. And while we’re big fans of small batches, here’s to the currently threatened Cutthroat population reaching mass quantities.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a coffee black, with a slight ruby tint when held up to the light. The cream colored head dissipates fairly quickly, but leaves a thin film. Lots of sticky lacing. The beer smells of roasted malts and bitter chocolate. This is a solid tasting porter. It does all of the obvious components well: roasted malts, bitter chocolate, a smokey quality, and there is a slightly sweet addition in there somewhere. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly dry finish.

Overall, this is just a well balanced, solid porter. It looks good, it tastes good, it feels good. Odell do a lot of things well, and their porter is no exception.

12oz bottle poured into New Belgium globe. Pours black with beige head that dissolves to a thin film, not much lacing. Appears a bit oily although not thick.

First smell is espresso grounds, some alcohol comes across and it's only 5%. Bittersweet chocolate, roasted almonds, leather.

Light bodied, medium carbonation but very tasty. Black coffee, raw sugar, slightly metallic. Bitter chocolate on the back end. Peppery bitterness really lingers, slight saltiness. Starts lacing the glass after several sips and increase in temp.

An excellent, very drinkable porter. Personally I'd prefer it a bit thicker but overall this is very good and I wish I had access to Odell in FL. Thanks to ShawnBGP for including it as an extra!

Really like this beer. I just learned what a "session beer" is, and I'm all giddy to review one so soon after learning what they are.

Pours black with copper bubbles and a mocha head, but it looks like a dark mahogany when held up to a light. Lots of strong coffee smells.

The taste is what I'm guessing makes this a good "session beer." It's 5% ABV — not much — but the flavor packs a wallop. Lots of brewed coffee and toasty malt flavors. I tasted traces of hops, but the beer was very well balanced. Clean finish as well. Good mouthfeel, but not as much as I'd want.

What can I say? It's rich, flavorful and easy to drink. I could see myself drinking this with breakfast and not feeling ashamed.

Odell Cutthroat Porter: It’s hard to review a style of beer that you do not drink regularly, as there is no benchmark to compare to. I really enjoyed this Porter, so other brands will be tested. The Cutthroat Porter is black in color with a tan lumpy head that fades but laces the glass well. The aroma is banquet of stuff: roasted malt, toffee, vanilla, coffee, cigarette butts all coming and going. How do they pack so much into one beer? The flavor is very similar, lots of roasted malt, yeast, spices, coffee, and chocolate, all evenly distributed. I was having pizza with the Cutthroat, which did not go well together, and when I hit a hot red pepper, my beer review had to end. I could taste nothing else but fire. Anyway, I had enough time with the Odell Porter to learn that Porters are a wild ride, greatly enjoyable, and the Cutthroat will be tested again and again.

A: Dark brown porter without much light penetration. Produces a one finger khaki head that thins before long but has decent retention and mild lacing. Poured into pint glass.
S: Smoky chocolate and coffee aromas strike the nose.
T: Roasted smoky malt with some bitterweet chocolate and a coffee finish that is dry, a tad bitter and clean.
M: Medium bodied with minimal carbonation.
O: Flavorful and smoky. The latter adds a unique take on the porter. I enjoyed it and will have another.
