Notes/Commercial Description:
We introduced 90 Shilling, our flagship beer, at our opening party in 1989. For a while, we'd been wondering what would happen if we lightened up the traditional Scottish ale? The result is an irresistibly smooth and delicious medium-bodied amber ale.

poured a dark amber color with a very small head. Picking up some caramel and dark fruits. Can pick up the sweetness in the smell immediatly. Taste of dark fruits with good carbonation. Medium bodied which fits this beer well. Worth having a glass and maybe 1 or 2 in the fridge.

Quality, well-rounded beer. Between dark amber and mahogany. Tight light khaki head. Deep nutty maltiness. Bready with thick caramel, but dry enough to keep it quaffable. Even bitterness. Light and smooth hop flavor - earthy, grassy, blackberries. Bit of fruit from the yeast too. Where better to try a brewery's flagship than the brewery itself?

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a NB globe glass.

A - Pours a brownish, translucent amber. Tawny, light tan finger width head. Very nice sudsy lacing on the glass. Carbonation appears moderate; even a little light. Very nice looking beer.

S - The nose is not overly strong. Toasty malt aromas as well as some sweeter caramel notes. Not getting much in the way of hop character here.

T - The taste is similar to the aroma for the most part. Bready and toasty, with just a touch of hop bitterness through the middle, but nothing crazy though. Finish is smooth and a little bit sweet.

M - Medium bodied. The carbonation is just right, and lends a nice crispness that gives this brew an added bit of levity.

O - Overall, a very nice beer. Can't believe that it took me this long to get to it, but I think I will be coming back for a full sixer sooner rather than later.

Sweet Merciless Malty Goodness...

Appearance -
A solid browned amber with a pillowy head.

Smell -
Roasted/Toasted Malts with various different levels there is a bit of brown sugar and dried fruit bit.

Taste -
Deep and multiple malt layers that is full and rounded, dark malt flavor. The lack of hops drives the beer towards a brown ale territory. It lacks the typical bitterness that I associate Scotch Ales

Mouthfeel - Oaty Smooth

Overall - I like this beer. Its one of the deeper Scotch Ale I have enjoyed. It is definitely work seeking out.

poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a perfectly transparent deep copper with a steady stream of bubbles rising to the creamy, tan, two-finger head. Head stays intact all the way down the glass, leaves behind a nice wall comprised of individual rings of lacing. Textbook.

S - A dose of slightly smokey peat and sweet malt notes upon opening the bottle and pouring in the glass that quickly dissipates.

T - Malty upfront. The body is almost completely driven by sweet malt with just a hint of caramel and peat, with just a small, slightly stale earthy hop bitterness to balance things out. Increase hop presence as the beer passes over the back of the tongue leads to a lightly toasted grain, caramel and peat finish.

M - Smack in the middle of medium bodied with enough carbonation to keep it lively and interesting.

Although 90 Shiling is Odell's flagship brew, it is actually my least favorite of their offerings that I have tried so far (although it looks damn sexy). By no means is it a bad brew, it just comes up short in the aroma profile and has a decent, but unmemorable flavor. In fact, if it didn't cost $8.50 a six, this would be an ideal causal beer. At this point in the argument, I still prefer Belhaven if I am going to shell out for a Scottish ale.

Pours a nice red, with a hint or orange. Forms about an inch of a tan colored head.

Smells very malty, and with the yeast, reminds me a bit of the smell of fresh baked bread.

Starts out very malty, with a sweetness that is just right, not overdone. There is a bit of a hop bite there, which adds a bit of spice to it. Has a bit of pepper overlaying the malt. Nice mix of flavors here.

The feel is very nice and full, better than I expected.

This is a very flavorful beer which goes down easy. I picked up this bottle while on vacation, and glad I gave it a try. Very nice beer.
