Notes & Commercial Description:

We introduced 90 Shilling, our flagship beer, at our opening party in 1989. For a while, we'd been wondering what would happen if we lightened up the traditional Scottish ale? The result is an irresistibly smooth and delicious medium-bodied amber ale.

Not a huge fan of ambers, not sure why I keep trying them.. 12oz bottle, no date, into hourglass.

Look is a great dark-brown amber, off-white finger of head. Smell is nutty and woody; hazelnut, earthy hop, baked bread. Nice velvety feel gives way to a blast of nutty oak and a sprinkling of numbing bitter hops.

Ended up being surprised by how solid a beer this is. Tasty.

Appearance is a clear, dark amber color and a sizable tan head of 3 fingers. Lacing is excellent and head retention is very good.

Smells are of smoked peat, toasted malts and earthy hop notes. A very unique aroma for sure.

Taste is bready and has a distinct flavor that carries over from the nose. I don't know that this is any kind of peat or smoke influence as the brewer's notes don't mention these, but it is my guess they've either used some smoking technique or tried to mimic the flavors of such. No bitterness is perceived, although the taste does have some bite to it from the smoke.

Mouthfeel is creamy and carbonation seems to be in the low ranges. The aftertaste is malty and smoked, with a light sweetness to it.

Overall the taste seemed unpleasant at first, but I came to appreciate it more as I had more samples. I'd say this was a good beer and I'm betting it would pair well with something smoky like bar-b-que or a cigar.
