750ml brown glass bottle with hood and wire cap over a cork served into a La Chouffe stem-tulip in me gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I like Odell.

Served straight from the refrigerator. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Not paired with food.

Cork hit the ceiling HARD upon opening. I'd say it's a fair bet this is overcarbonated.

A: Pours a four finger beige colour head - quite thin - of fair cream and decent thickness, and great retention for the high ABV - though the retention does further suggest severe overcarbonation. Body colour is a golden-orange; nontransparent but translucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Orange/citrus fruit esters, fresh pale malts, and floral & citrus hops. A fresh appealing aroma. Buttery. Some troublesome bitterness is present when I look for it by a friend's suggestion. No yeast character is detectable, nor is any alcohol. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Orange fruit esters and alcohol heat. Some decent floral hop character. Imbalanced and even simple. Hints of orange juice in the third act. The aroma promised a better beer. Not real well built. They tried to pack so much flavour into the body of a much smaller profile and it didn't really work. I applaud the experimentation and boldness, but I wouldn't call this an effective beer, even for their declared style. Still, it's not bad. No yeast character.

Mf: Smooth and wet, yet surprisingly dry on the climax - to its benefit. Too thin to support its flavours, but again they tried to cram flavour in where it wouldn't fit. Overcarbonated, though not as much as anticipated given the cork performance and high head retention as abovementioned.

Dr: Drinkable for its high ABV, but I'll still have trouble killing the bottle with me friend. It's like a sipper with the attempted refreshing feel of a pale ale, but the effect is not a good one. A disappointment from Odell, but I'm glad they attempted it. If you want a pale ale packed with more flavour than it ought to have, stick to Russian River's Happy Hops or Three Floyds' Zombie Dust.

1 pt 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle served in a tulip, reviewed live:

A - Pours a hazy light golden orange color with three fingers of soapy white head. Retention is very good, especially for 9% alcohol, and it leaves nice lacing as it recedes.

S - Buttery caramel, honey, sweet pale malts, light floral hops, sweet alcohol and biscuity yeast make up the majority of the nose. Balanced and inviting, if a bit restrained.

T - Crystal malt and caramel make up the body, with the bittering hops coming through on the finish. Light fruity esters throughout. Boozy finish. What's there is built well, but it's a bit too simple. Far from complex. Restrained.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and thick.

D - Not a bad beer by any means, but it suffers from simplicity. Definitely won't satisfy hop heads, though it is balanced fairly well.
