Poured a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pitch black with a very thin tan head. It looks like a liquid dark chocolate bar.

S: Rich milk chocolate with a hint of smokiness and sweet vanilla. Roasted malts are slightly apparent. So appetizing!

T: Sweet milk chocolate flavor through and through. A little sour milk flavor and booziness at the end. It's like I'm drinking a dessert.

M: Slightly heavy body but still super-smooth and creamy.

This is by far my favorite milk stout. A complete pleasure to drink and I can't taste the ABV at all. All hail Odell!

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a dense black (no light comes through with backlighting) with the faintest of dark tan heads that is gone in a nanosecond.
S: Very pleasant amalgam of dark roast coffee, chocolate, and cream. Charred caramel malt in the background.
T: Extremely smooth coffee and cream. Chocolate and caramel malts. Yummy. The higher ABV lends some heft and depth to the darker taste notes.
M: Extraordinarily smooth...hands down the smoothest beer I've ever tasted. Lightly creamy feel. ABV is well hidden, but lurking.
D: This one surprised me (in a good way) on several levels...the ABV is 8.5% (much higher than your typical milk stout)...and it was also amazingly smooth. Not too complex, but what it does it does very well. An outstanding brew...seek it out!

A-Dark brown/black....minimal head

S-Milk chocolate....whopper candy...coffee heavily laden with cream..

T-Nice lactose impressions....whoppers candy again...milk chocolate....just a slight sour note on the finish...very slight..

M-Drinks more like a 5% stout than an 8.5% stout....body is medium with a slightly syruppy impression...the higher ABV is indistinguishable.

O-Nice beer. I bought a single of this and thought it read "chocolate mint stout"...time for reading glasses I guess. Nicely done beer. Could drink a couple or three of these in a sitting...

Reminiscent of Guinness in terms of appearance. As dark brown as you can go without being black. Does not let light through. Smell that roasted malt and milk chocolate. It's dessert time! Like carbonated, alcoholic chocolate milk sans milk. Viscous mouthfeel. Somewhat of an alcoholic aftertaste.

Original Review 3-23-13
Picked up a four pack from Total Wine back in early February for $10. Best by 5-8-13.

I generally don't ramble but in this case i need to qualify this review. I do really love non sour brews from Odell. All that i have had has been good to excellent. Now with Lugene i was looking forward to a nice chocolate stout. I understand that our palates are all different but when cracking this beer what i did not expect was the amount of sourness in this brew. In a quick check of latest reviews i see one other BA detected the same sourness.

Beer poured black with a nice tan head. 4.0

Nose is sour milk, and hints of chocolate. 2.0

Taste is sour milk, some roasted malts, sweet chocolate. 3.0

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth. 3.5

Overall drinkability for me is below average as i did not sign up for a sour milk beer. 2.75

Re-review 6-29-13
Picked up a growler at Bevmo for $11.99 after having a sample this past Thursday. Shared with a friend last night.

Initial sample was delicious. According to the Odell sales rep he indicated they did experience lacto bacteria in the bottled version of the brew but that it is a non issue out of the keg. Was glad to here i could give this another shot.

Pour created a nice tan head.

Nose was sweet with a hint of roastiness.

Taste was bittersweet chocolate and roasted malts.

Mouthfeel was on the thinner side for the abv and not particularly smooth.

Overall this was a tasty brew. Paired well with the chocolate cupcakes we had for dessert. a nice way to finish the night!

Great beer with a wonderful finish. I could drink this all day long if it wasn't for the ABV. Great story behind the name as well. One of the best chocolate stouts i have had in a long time. I've had in bottle, nitro, and draft, as well as a few firkins. I keep going back.
