BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Monkey Paw Pub & Brewery
California, United States | website

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Muriqui is our first attempt at a double digit San Diego Pale Ale. It is a true kitchen sink beer. We used 9 different hops and the layers of flavor created are wonderful. Citrus driven with mild bitterness, this beer starts off with a hint of body and fruit and finishes dry but not astringent. The beer will evolve throughout the next few batches but we are very happy with this deceptive ale.

From a Monkey Paw tap to 10 oz cylindrical glass (we should expand the suggested glassware for IPA, this is a standard vesicle big, west coast IPAs)

A: Orange-tan in color, a small but persistent head completely covers the glass in lacing.

S: Citrus rind, fresh pine and honey-sweet bread make the bouquet. Plenty of alcohol as well, pretty straight up for the style.

T: Rind-y, vinous notes right up front, and more bitter than expected. Ample malt-backbone produces a honey/toffee sweetness. The bitter hops turn a little salty as alcohols warms. Finishes long and bitter sweet, with plenty of citrus rind notes lingering.

M: Medium-full bodied, appropriate complexion. Was served a little too cold, was hard to parse the flavors at first.

I'm a little underwhelmed with this one...was waiting in line for the Younger and people were raving about this. The bartender that served it said it was better...well, not quite. But putting my expectations aside, this is yet another tasty, imperial West Coast-style IPA. I wouldn't pass it up, but I would wait in line for it either.

Tap at Monkey Paw. Yellow and murky as a shitswamp. Aroma is bread, caramel, alcohol, pine, hint of citrus. Flavor is alcohol, orange, alcohol, pine. Not aggressive in the bitterness department. Midpalate and finish are sweet bread and caramel, finishing with orange and booze. I'd rather this style didn't exist if it is going to be like this.
