Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA
Dark black with a moderately sized brown head that eventually leaves spots and spiderwebs of lace down the glass. A pretty beer.
The aroma is not overly complex, with rich, roasted malts playing the dominant role, along with a bit of chocolate and nut character.
The flavor is more simple than the aroma, with roasted malt and a moderate level of bitterness really the only discernible elements. Tasty, but simple.
Medium bodied with ample carbonation.
An above average, though simple, stout.

On tap at Monkey Paw.
A: Deep brown with a tinge of red near the edges when held to the light of the doorway. The head is an inch of dense brown foam and lacing is scattered.
S: Prominent coffee presence accompanies roasted malt, earth, and a decided nutty quality. I detect a whisper of dark fruit. Chocolate is rich and pervasive. Smells great.
T: Earthy and nutty coffee notes with a dash of chocolate. There's a moderate bitterness with a light grapefruit presence. Roasted grains are pronounced. The beer finishes with coffee, roast, and chocolate, with a final bitter earthy hop flourish that lingers on the palate.
M: Upper medium to lower full in body. The mouthfeel is sticky and dry.
Overall: A very good American Stout. At just under 6% this packs a lot of flavor.

On-tap at Beachwood I,
A: Pours black with a nice creamy almost nitro looking tan head, great lace, good retention.
S: Light roast, fairly mild bouquet, some chocolate.
T: Good roasted malt flavour, baker's chocolate and a slight caramelised burnt sugar play. Nice balance with some spicy hop flavours.
M: Medium-bodied but feels richer than that would imply. Creamy, with a biting rich carbonation that never goes overboard. Long aftertaste.
O: I'd liken this to Obsidian Stout's baby brother, it's quite similar to that beer, just not as big. My first from the new Monkey Paw Brewing in San Diego and I'm impressed.
