On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach. They call this a "Black Lager with cocoa nibs and blood orange." Just a slight malty sweetness. Lots of darkly roasted grains plus a weird vegetable soup taste.

Very dark brown in the pint glass with a thin cap of foam. A funny fruity tang. Quite bitter with lots of citrus peel taste and a hoppy note. Some bitter chocolate flavor, but it really tastes like diluted burnt coffee with an unwelcome fruity edge. Maybe they will lose the recipe for this one. [From notes on May 28, 2013 tasting at the brewpub]

Brewed in collaboration with Almanac in San Jose. This is a beer fermented with lager yeast at ale temperatures, otherwise known as a California Common or Steam beer. What sets this one apart is the addition of dark malts and lots-o-hops (this is San Diego after all!). The beer is pitch black; the roasted malts dominate the aroma and flavor. The description on the Monkey Paw website says there is cocoa and blood orange in the beer but I did not really detect any contribution from these ingredients.
