Hoping to try the Phillips IPA which I had heard was great, but didn't see it anywhere so I picked this up.

Poured a nice dark brown color with loads of carbonation and a white head that dissipated quickly. Just a touch of lacing was left behind. Aromas of dark roasted coffee, fresh bread, and candy. The taste was quite flavorful with a nice balance of malt and hops. Expresso and coffee flavors were apparent throughout with a bitter finish. Rather thin for the style; almost like soda rather than a stout. Finished off a bomber without a problem.

A: Black, slight ruby tinge, a little tan head, ZERO retention or lace.

S: Fruity, slight roastyness and tartness, with a little mocha in the nose.

T: Mainly fruity, slight roastyness and tartness. Dry finish. Flavour improves as it breaths (decarbonates).

M: Light body, moderately high carbonation (too much), prickley.

D: Easily approachable, but too bubbly for mass consumption.

Well, as my rating might show, you can color this BA completely unimpressed. I bought this bottle on a trip to Courtenay back in March, and have been holding onto it ever since, waiting for the day when I was ready. Well, today I'm ready, and today I'm ready to pour this down the drain.

Appearance: Managed to get about a half-inch of head out of this beer, with a fairly aggressive pour. It didn't stay around long, dissipating into a lone white ring around the rim, with a couple of lonely, white-rimmed bubbles lollygagging about within. I'm sorely confused. This thing is brown. Brown as in "I can see through this thing" brown. What the hell? Hold it up to the light and the light shines through, and delivers some lovely ruby highlights throughout, but I shouldn't be able to see the damn lightbulb on the other side. When I drink stout, I expect it to be, well, stout in all areas: color, smell, taste, mouthfeel. So far, we're 0-1.

Smell: What smell? I smell almost nothing. I have a nose the size of a '57 Packard, and I smell, wait for it, just a sweet hint of malt. No overpowering malts, no dry roasted barley smell, and certainly no goddam espresso. What kind of coffee stout is this? (0-2)

Taste: Well, it's not awful, it's just not very good. This wouldn't be a bad beer if they called it an Espresso Mild. Hell, if they called it that, this thing would probably get 5's across the board (OK, 4's or 3.5's or some goddam thing). But they didn't. This tastes nothing like a stout, and certainly nothing like coffee. I want there to be a mad rush of malts in the beginning, and then some duelling dryness between the roasted barley and the coffee in the end. The only duelling going on is in my head: "I should pour this out." "WHAT? Don't pour this out, you jackass, you paid good money for this." "But it's not a stout, goddammit. It's a mild." "Don't pour it out, moron. It's beer!" (0-3)

Mouthfeel: Where there's no malt, there's no mouthfeel. Sigh. (0-4)

Drinkability: Not good. There's simply nothing to recommend it at all.

I've had this twice, and both times found it agreeable, but I just can't see it as a stout. It pours nice enough, a deep brown with small off-white head. Smell is coffee/sweet chocolate, but nothing out of the ordinary for stout.

Initial taste is coffee, roasted barley. A little more coffee than your typical stout; like black coffee, a particular bitter after taste. So far nothing terrible, but nothing outstanding.

The problem lies in the mouthfeel. It is thin, almost watery for a stout. Maybe if it was thicker, the taste would be better. It is drinkable, but instead of being too thick, it loses drinkability because it leaves you lacking something that an ideal stout would provide.

I would buy it again, but this isn't something I would get too excited about. A decent brew, and commendation to Matt Phillips for trying something different.

Poured a very dark brown, almost black, but not quite opaque. Small amounts of light creeps through. Head is light tan colour, airy, not much retention. Lacing is ok.

Nose is subtle. Hints of roasted malts, some coffee aroma, but very faint.

Taste and mouthfeel: Not even close to what you'd consider a stout. Watery, and too thin for a stout. It has this soapy feel to it. Taste was very sour initially. Not much of a roasted flavour. Only at the very end do you get slight hints of espresso.

Overall...very disappointing.

A typical Phillips beer, not quite enough flavour and a slightly off finish ruin what could have been a nice stout. The sweetish finish and lack of real coffee notes make this beer pretty forgettable. I wanted to like this pint but by the time I had drained the glass I was ready for something else.

Found this in Prince George on a recent jaunt out (congrats Theresa and Hans!). Came in a 500 ml brown bottle, I like the old-timey style of the label. Pours out pretty darn thin for a stout, very thin off-white head that fades out to a thin ring. A very dark walnut when held to the light, I have to agree with stephenlouis that this looks more like an attractive dunkel than a stout. Roasted malt and mild coffee on the nose, pretty one-dimensional. Mouthfeel is incredibly watery for a stout, no body whatsoever, which affects the experience of the flavour. Tastes watery even, with only the slightest hint of malt or coffee to be experienced. Quite disappointing, both the stout and the espresso seem to be very lacking in this espresso stout.
