Classic Pairings in History: Stevie Wonder & Paul McCartney Super Dave Osborne & Mr. Fuji Cheddar cheese & pickles Bob & Doug McKenzie Mork & Mindy Bonnie & Clyde Chocolate & Beer!!! We'd say that Longboat is a classic chocolate porter, but lets face it, who's ever heard of a chocolate porter? It is, however, a rich dark ale, with a distinctive chocolate finish. Comes in a 650mL bottle, cause 341mL just isn't enough!

Poured from the bottle into a tulip pint glass.
Deep and classic opaque walnut brown, not a hue or speck of light gets through. Head forms shampoo and soapy tan with shampoo like bubbles at about four fingers tall. Settles to a thick fluffy top but falls quite noticeably. Manages to leave a puck while consuming.
Chocolate malt powdery nose. Dry grainy senses, and soft roasting qualities. A little milky character follows also. Lots of dry cocoa also.
Palate comes with a very wet body even for a porter. Strange tingling front tip tongue sensations almost metal and very tinny, with some weird carbonation. Light wet bodied malt coating in the palate and very fleeting. Milky chocolate disappears quickly while noticeable, on first sips. Some noticeable cola like sweetness though which seems to match a saccharine like quality.
There are some classic porter elements here but they are too weak and not really carrying well. The cocoa addition comes off more as a medicinally sweet addition than adding anything really interesting to the beers profile.

22 oz split two ways - pours dark brown to almost black with faintly beige 1/2 finger head. Aroma definitely chocolate - more milk/sweet. Flavour follows - roasty sweet chocolate. The mouthfeel falls down here with a bit of thin bubbliness. Not a bad beer - aroma and taste great but body falls off....

Pours dark brown, light mocha head, lotsa lacing.
Smells of hazelnut and chocolate, some fruit aromas, banana I feel like.
Hops first, then a burst of fruit with an aftertaste of bitter chocolate.
Thick mouthfeel, medium carbination.
Overall I love Phillips. Though not my prefered style of beer (slight banana flavour) it is still obviously very well done. Try every Phillips brew you can get your hands on, they are amongst my very favorite breweries.

A- Pours a black/brown color that resembles darkened cola/coffee...it is opaque! The head is caramel in color but doesn't have much of a froth as I would expect, but rather a wispy film that swirls around the top of the liquid in uniform fashion. Carbonation is of course too hard to tell as to what is happening and the lacing looks to be impressive, with plenty of small sticky patches holding on to the side of the glass. Overall an above average looking porter!
S- There is most definitely medium sweet chocolate and/or cocoa powder detected on the nose, with grainy burnt malts blended into the mix as well. There are also hints of vanilla, toasty biscuit, caramel and muted notes of almond nuttiness....almond butter to be exact. The finish is dry and slightly bitter, but nothing out of the ordinary....clean perhaps.
T- The overall flavors are mild in character, but do resemble the primary stated taste....chocolate! There are more subtle notes of cream, roasted malt, coffee, toffee sweetness and clean, yet burnt barley malts. The finish is mild and smooth.....an interesting chocolate porter to say the least!
M/O- Velvety on the palate really, and the body is medium/full. The alcohol is well hidden and I find this to be a well balanced, mild and highly drinkable porter! A good job by Phillips and I recommend!
