Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

As gentle as a log to the bow, this headstrong auburn ale is full of rich malt flavours and deep caramel aromas. Mildly carbonated, Deadhead should be served at cellar temperature (8 C). No grapes have been harmed in the creation of this beer.

2009 Edition.

Mahogany ruby colour with a reasonably tame off-white head.

Very sweet, almost overly sweet malt scent. Grapes, brown sugar and raisins but not much else.

Very overwhelming malt and brown sugar taste. Hints of raisins, fruit and even oatmeal. Very faint suggestions of wine.

Smooth mouthfeel, but not quite as drinkable as some of the barleywines I've had, even higher ABV ones. Regardless, a great brew from Phillips.

2009 vintage, 10% abv

650mL bottle poured into a chalice, served at cellar temperature. Dark brown color with a thin tan head. The aroma is fairly weak with a little bit of malt and spices. The taste is better with malt, nutmeg and other spices, and wood flavors. Nicely balanced with a bit of bitterness. Some alcohol is noticable. The body is a bit too thin for a barleywine, with mild carbonation. This would be better with a fuller body, but overall this is still a pretty good barleywine from Phillips.
