Notes/Commercial Description:
Like Shaft, Dolemite and Blacula before him, guess who’s getting his own sequel? That’s right, Dr. Funk is strutting his way back to town for another go round. This Bavarian dark lager was a hit with all the ladies and fellas when the Funk was featured in the Showcase, so we've brought back the grand uncle of dunkel in his own seasonal six-pack.

341ml bottle, a single from the current Showcase mixed-pack, from a local purveyor that plays it like that. Is it me, or does 'Dr. Funk' remind one a little too much of a tweaked-out Fozzie Bear?

This beer pours a clear, dark bronzed amber hue, with two fingers of bubbly, foamy pale beige head, which leaves a barely broken wall of rising cliff lace around the glass as it readily recedes.

It smells of toasty biscuit malt, a touch of caramel/toffee sweetness, subtle medium chocolate notes, a more prominent oily nuttiness, wet ash, and a soft, mostly underwhelmed west-coast citrus/pine hoppiness. The taste is bready, biscuity caramel malt, a mild toasty essence pervading all, lulling lukewarm coffee, stony minerals, more gritty mixed nuts, a hint of ash, and more rather innocuous earthy, floral hops.

The carbonation is healthy in its goings on, the body a decent medium weight, and haltingly smooth, the edginess of the biscuit and hops taking a minor toll. It finishes on the dry side, the biscuit and nutty essences still playing trump at this point.

Not a bad dunkel lager, per se, I'm just getting a bit too much confusion in the traditional malt and hop profiles here, like the West Coast just has to have its say here, yet is muffled in doing so. Anyways, worth a try, but something odd just tugs away, out of sight, but not out of mind.

A - Very dark brown, almost completely opaque aside from from a small amount of light passing through the beer at the very bottom of the glass. One finger of thick eggshell head with good retention

S - Caramel, breadiness and a hint of chocolate. Fairly weak overall nose.

T - Sweet caramel, toffee and brown sugar flavors are dominant. Some floral hop notes and the slightest hint of chocolate in the background.

M - Medium body. Slightly creamy. Moderate carbonation.

This beer looks fantastic, but unfortunately doesnt follow through.
The nose has some nice coffee and chocolate notes but there is somthing here that I dont like.
The taste is a bit sweet, with some underlying dark malt flavours.
Maybe I'm not a Dunkel fan? Tastes and feels like a week stout.
Not a bad beer, but I wouldnt run back to the store as soon as I'm out.
Good job on Phillips trying something new again.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 31/5/12

A clear cola with enough clarity to see the stream of bubbles barfing off the bottom of the glass, a finger of tan foam has great retention and cakes the side of the glass with thick continuous lace, perfect!!

S smell pretty lame compared to the look, faint milk chocolate, cold coffee and now that I've picked up on the Phillips house flavor and smell I just cant shake it

T some hops and brown sugar on top of what I smell but still very boring, seriously what is causing their beers to taste the same?

M light medium bodied with lots of bubbles, slightly sticky on the lips with a nutty aftertaste

O pretty basic stuff that kinda tastes like the cream ale I had last night, weird

I seem to like many of Phillips hops centric brews but I can shake the fact that many from their regular line up taste the same with a hoppy cornflake? house flavor. Perhaps its not as noticeable when covered up by hops, I figured it was yeast but its there in ale's and lager's alike. If someone can explain this too me I'd appreciate it, not bad beer but pretty average.

So I bought Phillips' new "showcase" pack and was stoked to find out that the "secret" beer inside is a brand new beer from this great Victoria brewery!

So, to start this beer off, it pours a very pretty deep, dark, molasses brown with definite ruby red tones when held up to light. In my duvel tulip, I got about 2 fingers of off-white head that thins down to a decent film and leaves some lacing.

The major aromas that come through are of roasty, milky chocolate, some northwest hops and some nice spicy chilli notes on the nose too.

On the palate, I get some bready malts up front with chocolate and nuts all kept on the bitter side from the subtle hop presence throughout. The flavour, however, could be a little more pronounced and I do get some slightly unfortunate mineral-water and cooked vegetable flavours coming through mid-sip and on to the linger. Not the cleanest of tastes - just a bit out of balance and somewhat lacking in flavour overall.

The mouthfeel of this brew is medium bodied, with a slightly creamy texture and not a lot of carbonation to speak of. A bit oily on the finish too.

At 5%, this beer is very easy-drinking but, honestly, after a promising nose to this beer, the flavour just tends to put me off enough to not want another right way. I would drink this beer again but I wouldn't go searching for it. I can't help but say that I am quite disappointed with this latest effort from an otherwise outstanding brewery. Too bad.

Not a bad dunkel but not one to stick in the beer memory for long as it offers up some caramel notes to the lager base but stays a basic course with some PNW hops thrown in to the mix. I much prefer the Rural Brewer Brown Ale to this as it has more complexity and a better mouthfeel. Drinkable but not among Phillips best .

Pours a brown/wine red color with a dense two finger off-white head that has decent retention and leaves little lacing.

Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, brown sugar with a faint hint of herbal hops.

Tastes of roasted malts, bready, some minerals and finishes with some bitter coffee. Taste is a bit weak overall in my opinion but shines through more once it warms up.

Medium bodied, a bit creamy with low carbonation that is tingling.
