Hey look, a Kolsch! Not the easier beer style to locate around here but a few import examples are showing up and this is probably the easiest domestic example to find, either alone or in a mixed pack. Pours a striking mustard yellow with a decent amount of white head. Flavor is fresh bakery yeast and vibrant pale malts that almost recall popcorn, along with grassy hop notes. Palate is crisp and refreshing, with pils malt and strong cracker, a touch toasty, sweetgrass, hay, hints of creamy lemon, apple, vanilla, and ginger, with a lingering sweetness (lacks the crisp bitter finish of a good pilsner). Carbonation is a little aggressive but I guess that's part of the point. Some dextrin chew apparent. Surprisingly layered and interesting with a predominance of sweet grains, yet drinkable in quantity.

341ml single bottle, apparently part of the latest Showcase mixed-pack. What is the beer equivalent of a 78 RPM record? This, according to the brewer.

This beer pours a cloudy pale yellowish straw colour, with two fingers of puffy, foamy white head, which leaves some broad swaths of randomly webbed lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, biscuity, and yeasty pastry dough, a bit of citrus cream, and nice leafy, earthy, weedy hops. The taste is more semi-sweet bready, doughy malt, a touch of white wine must, mildly acrid lemon, and soft citrusy, leafy hops.

The bubbles are a bit fresh and peppy, with a slight persistent edge, the body a weak medium weight, and a tad watery in its smoothness. It finishes rather off-dry, the sweetness of the malt still firmly planted in the bakery realm, a bit of yeast loitering about, and some pleasantly subtle fruitiness - tart and bitter - rounding things off.

A pretty enjoyable Kolsch, brightly flavoured, and quite easy to put back. Staring at the snowbanks outside right now, I can't help but imagine a nice warm spring or summer patio as this one quickly slips away.

Yellow like apple juice, with just a skim of bubbles on top. Crisp. Mildly bitter.

Bottle: Poured a pale yellow color Kolsch with a medium size white head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light cereal notes is simple. Taste is also dominated by light cereal notes with a bland aftertaste. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. I could not have known this was a Kolsch had it not been specified on the label, I thought this was more akin a golden ale.

On-tap at Craft Beer Market.
Pale yellow color, shiny white head, decent retention and some thin string lacing.
Not much aroma, light grains.
Light and fresh taste, sweetish malt, as a kolsch should be.
Body is thin, but average for style.
Pretty clean taste.

Bottle, from 2016 Phillips Showcase mixed pack.
Clean and fresh, as expected from the style.
