Coffee stouts have always held a special place in our hearts as one of the three original Phillips brews, and this year’s Imperial version–brewed in collaboration with our friends at 2% Jazz Coffee Co.–is an 8% 650mL double shot!

Pouring a deep black earth colour, rich roasted coffee flavours and hints of dark chocolate guide your palate through a java-laden journey. Methodically crafted with only the best local espresso, this one-eyed jackal is no wildcard.

A: Black, impenetrable to light, a finger and a half or so of head the colour of cafe au lait.

S: Dark roasted malts, burnt sugar.

T: I can definitely believe it’s made with espresso. More than anything else, that’s what I taste. Now, I like my coffee dark with plenty of milk, and I think I like my beer without coffee. Personal preference aside, this beer is certainly what it claims to be.

F: Maybe a little thin for a stout? It leaves a weird film in my mouth, kind of like when you drink the last of coffee brewed with a French press - a bit gritty.

O: Glad I tried it, probably wouldn’t get it again.

A - near impenetrable black, thumb of dark tan head held at half a finger
S - medium coffee and nutty aromas, a bit of mustiness and leather
T - dark roast coffee and old leather maltiness dominate, touch of cola and a lingering mustiness
M - fairly heavy with a smooth start, mildly chalky, full finish
O - not outstanding but definitely well done, easy drinking with a nice mix of rich flavours

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate black with a finger width of mocha head.

Smell - Roasted espresso bean, chocolate, brewed coffee, cocoa.

Taste - Roasted coffee and barley malts with a cocoa finish. Slight acidity.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light-medium carbonation.

Overall - A respectable coffee stout from Phillips. The right flavours are there, but it seems like something is missing - perhaps a more complex blend of other flavours (dark chocolate for example). Still tasty though.

From a 650 ml brown bottle. Pours out a slick looking opaque jet black hue, totally impermeable to light. Tall loose chunky mocha head that settles to a thick creamy cap.

Intense yet smooth rounded espresso on the nose, certainly most prominent, with some sweeter dark malt lurking in the background.

Roasty, earthy espresso up front in the flavour, while a bit of milky sweetness pops up in the middle, reverting back to a dry espresso character on the finish accompanied by some mild earthy hops, with a hint of grassiness too.

Mouthfeel is the lighter side of medium bodied, texture starts out slick and a bit watery but builds to a thicker creaminess towards the finish, with moderate carbonation.

Really smooth and enjoyable coffee stout, I'm not a coffee drinker myself but can still appreciate how well Phillip's blending of the espresso with this style really works. The skill is presented with the subtlety and finesse found within the flavour, and by not simply going for an overpowering roasty coffee bomb. Great coffee stout.
