The big-barrel aged brother to Crooked Tooth this Pumpkin ale is king of patch. 'Crookeder' brings a delicious vanilla bourbon punch to help to light up that smile! Pairs well with tricks & treats of all kinds.

650ml bottle, nice to finally see this elder sibling of Crooked Tooth make its way east this autumnal season - and why on Jebus' green earth is this not a Pumpkin Ale?

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves a bit of low-lying, sudsy ocean swell lace around the glass as it slowly and evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, doughy caramel malt, vegetal gourd, clove, coriander, and ginger spice, musty vanillan, a softly astringent woodiness, clean Bourbon booze notes, and a small leafy, weedy earthiness. The taste is big on the sweet pumpkin mass right off the bat, with a nutty caramel malt swiftly backing it up, along with some vanilla wafers, ginger snaps, free associated clove and sugary ginger spice, all closed off rather tersely by an otherwise gentle Bourbon whiskey heat.

The bubbles are pretty sedate, barely more than a kid-gloves frothiness to be had, the body a decent medium weight for the actual seasonal style, and generally smooth, as the burgeoning alcohol comes betwixt it and a small, cowering creaminess. It finishes a tad on the sweet side, as the lingering pumpkin flesh, caramel malt, and vanilla-heavy Kentucky whiskey staves assert their provenance.

Wow, this is a whole a lot more approachable than I was led to believe over the past few seasons of 'no, we get a lot of Phillips' stuff here, but not THAT one, I know!' Anyway, the Bourbon barrel treatment is surely more sweet than boozy, but hardly lacking in either quality, rendering the '-er' version exactly as it proclaims: big, brotherly, and adept at tricks and/or treats of all manner.

I’ll drink pumpkin beers in October. I was stoked to find the crookeder on the shelf this year. I like it. It does have a good amount of spice. Smells like pumpkin spice. It’s hard to detect any attributes from the barrel ageing. But there’s a nice bite and it’s full of flavour and character for a BA 7.3 beer. Pumpkin beers get a bad rap, it’s hard to master, and not a well liked style. I think Phillips did a good job with this one. Its not a beer you drink all the time, but enjoyable when the leaves are falling!

First smell and taste that hits your nose and mouth is cinnamon. Not what I was expecting. I was hoping for more pumpkin flavor to come through. I don't mind spices usually but this was WAY too much cinnamon flavour. My husband and usually look forward to Phillips brewing co. And we especially love pumpkin beers, but this was out of control with the spices, it ruined the overall experience.

Appearance - Pours a reddish copper with two fingers of bubbly tan head.

Smell - pumpkin, earthy and leafy hops, bready malts, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla, hint of oakiness, and earthy yeast. The spices are more intense in this version compared to the regular Crooked Tooth.

Taste - Pumpkin followed by the earthy and leafy hops. The bready malts come through next followed by a nice punch from the spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove. The vanilla and oak make a nice presence which make it a very flavourful.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes a tad sticky with the spices and oak elements (vanilla) lingering.

Overall - A enjoyable and well constructed version of the style. At first, I was skeptical of a barrel-aged pumpkin beer, but after tasting it, it is very flavourful and the spices and pumpkin are more pronounced in this one which its younger brother, Crooked Tooth lacked. Worth seeking out for those that are a fan of pumpkin beers.

Struggled to get through one glass!
This is the 2017 batch drank on Halloween and I'm finding it to be a spice bomb in the wrong kind of way for my liking. At first I thought it was the pumpkin spice but could also be the oaking pushing this over the top! My only thoughts are that I would have liked to bottle age this beer until Halloween 2018:(

650ml bomber poured into tulip 23/10/16

A clear golden copper, a single stream of bubbles pump out two fingers of foam that falls in no time leaving no lace

s clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, the usual suspects are there, not much bourbon barrel but some vanilla notes and pumpkin are hard to miss

T a little boozy for 7.3%, more woody notes then the nose, but everything's still there in one form or another

M lighter side of medium, prickly bubbles, slick with a little heat, maybe more bourbon barrel after the fact then anywhere else

O not a whole lot of barrel going on but there's enough to set it apart from all the other pumpkin brews hitting the shelf this time of year

A little boozy considering but other then that it is what it claims. I try to limit myself to one pumpkin beer a year and this one was much as I expected.

Pours a beautiful deep orange with an off white head and nice retention. Smells like pumpkin, pumpkin spice, brown sugar. Very faint hop presence and a touch of barrel character develop as beer warms. Taste dominated by pumpkin complimented with some bready malt notes. Finishes relatively dry with a slight bitterness and a touch of booze and wood with the pumpkin flavor lingering on the tongue. I'd like to try the non barrel version side by side to see what the barrel adds because I'm seeing a ton of influence from the barrel aging process in this beer. It certainly remains a decent pumpkin beer though with a bunch of flavor.

Poured a slightly amber colour with a thin beige head that quickly disappeared leaving only a thin layer on the surface. The nose lead with bourbon notes, wood, pumpkin, vanilla and light caramel malts. The taste revealed a lot of the same with the pumpkin and bourbon up front and everything else mixing it up in the background. I found the carbonation to be very mild and the mouthfeel on the light side of medium.

L: Like the Crooked Tooth, but a little darker. It has a light brown tinge with an orange hue to it.

S: Pumpkin and spices it also had a strong bourbon to it with a slight hint of vanilla.

T: Pumpkin right off the first sip but then you get the bourbon taste to it and a nice sweetness from the vanilla.

F: Nice carbination and easy drinking beer. Defiantly would buy again!

O: Super easy beer to drink with lots of flavour and a beer you get new flavour every sip.

Bought in a bottle from Spirit of Seymour in North Vancouver. The one finger head disappeared quickly. Nice spice flavour. More flavourful than the Crooked Tooth with more of a kick.

looks great. not much carbonation. no head retention.
smells like pie. quests which kind. I've been to too many church dinners to say where I smelt one like this, but it's a fall dinner pie for sure.
dry finish. I'm thirsty, but I like my pies on a fork better.

Tasting notes: Far more robust than its little brother Crooked Tooth (see that review). Whisky and slightly fetid squash on the nose. Buttery toffee, nutmeg/mace, vanilla, clove, whipped cream, cinnamon stick on the palate. Thick and rich. Slightly nutty. One of the better pumpkins ales I've sampled, really does recall the dessert. The spices season but do not dominate. The barrel aging did this a world of good, although typically I have to be in the mood for such flavors.
