The big-barrel aged brother to Crooked Tooth this Pumpkin ale is king of patch. 'Crookeder' brings a delicious vanilla bourbon punch to help to light up that smile! Pairs well with tricks & treats of all kinds.

Bought in a bottle from Spirit of Seymour in North Vancouver. The one finger head disappeared quickly. Nice spice flavour. More flavourful than the Crooked Tooth with more of a kick.

650ml bottle, nice to finally see this elder sibling of Crooked Tooth make its way east this autumnal season - and why on Jebus' green earth is this not a Pumpkin Ale?

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves a bit of low-lying, sudsy ocean swell lace around the glass as it slowly and evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, doughy caramel malt, vegetal gourd, clove, coriander, and ginger spice, musty vanillan, a softly astringent woodiness, clean Bourbon booze notes, and a small leafy, weedy earthiness. The taste is big on the sweet pumpkin mass right off the bat, with a nutty caramel malt swiftly backing it up, along with some vanilla wafers, ginger snaps, free associated clove and sugary ginger spice, all closed off rather tersely by an otherwise gentle Bourbon whiskey heat.

The bubbles are pretty sedate, barely more than a kid-gloves frothiness to be had, the body a decent medium weight for the actual seasonal style, and generally smooth, as the burgeoning alcohol comes betwixt it and a small, cowering creaminess. It finishes a tad on the sweet side, as the lingering pumpkin flesh, caramel malt, and vanilla-heavy Kentucky whiskey staves assert their provenance.

Wow, this is a whole a lot more approachable than I was led to believe over the past few seasons of 'no, we get a lot of Phillips' stuff here, but not THAT one, I know!' Anyway, the Bourbon barrel treatment is surely more sweet than boozy, but hardly lacking in either quality, rendering the '-er' version exactly as it proclaims: big, brotherly, and adept at tricks and/or treats of all manner.

The bourbon barrels used in this beer really give it punch. It seems the beer has it's pumpkin-ness turned up quite a bit higher than the regular Crooked Tooth and all the baking spices and pumpkin pie qualities actually come through better on this beer. There is also all that bourbon flavour in the background, which adds loads of vanilla and some sweetness to the beer as well a good punch. The alcohol is noticeable too. Slightly out of balance and a little too sweet for my taste. It is definitely more complex than the Crooked Tooth, but I don't think I could drink more than 1. I found it a little cloying.

Phillip's Brewing 'Crooked'er Tooth' @ 7.3% , a barrel aged Pumpkin Ale , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $6
A-pour is a clear orange/amber from the bottle to glass with a small off-white head that is leaving a streaky lace along the pint/stein
S-smell's boozey , hint's of spice's , mostly clove
T-2013 big booze , wow , needs to mellowed
T-2014 version way smoother , fruitier , tastier
MF-medium carbonation , big full bodied , this beer feels bigger than the ABV
Ov-big boozey Imperial Pumpkin Ale , needs some time in the cellar to mellow a bit ,
2014 version much better and for cellaring , surprisingly good winter beer with some age on it

L: Like the Crooked Tooth, but a little darker. It has a light brown tinge with an orange hue to it.

S: Pumpkin and spices it also had a strong bourbon to it with a slight hint of vanilla.

T: Pumpkin right off the first sip but then you get the bourbon taste to it and a nice sweetness from the vanilla.

F: Nice carbination and easy drinking beer. Defiantly would buy again!

O: Super easy beer to drink with lots of flavour and a beer you get new flavour every sip.

looks great. not much carbonation. no head retention.
smells like pie. quests which kind. I've been to too many church dinners to say where I smelt one like this, but it's a fall dinner pie for sure.
dry finish. I'm thirsty, but I like my pies on a fork better.

There is so much to pick up in this beer that it takes a few minutes to make sense of everything. Big spice notes, pumpkin flavour, hops, malt and the added vanilla oak notes of the barrel aging. This is one big pumpkin beer that is totally drinkable but complex so you want to sip it. The finish is long and the flavour mix is well thought out.

A: Deep amber liquid with a 1/4" white head.

S: Cinnamon, all-spice, pumpkin, caramel.

T: Cinnamon, all-spice, pumpkin, caramel, vanilla, bourbon.

M: Some drying from the alcohol, medium to thick viscosity, and a medium level of carbonation.

O: Very tasty, one of the better pumpkin ales I have had.

Tasting notes: Far more robust than its little brother Crooked Tooth (see that review). Whisky and slightly fetid squash on the nose. Buttery toffee, nutmeg/mace, vanilla, clove, whipped cream, cinnamon stick on the palate. Thick and rich. Slightly nutty. One of the better pumpkins ales I've sampled, really does recall the dessert. The spices season but do not dominate. The barrel aging did this a world of good, although typically I have to be in the mood for such flavors.
