Hardywood Rum Pumpkin combines the nostalgic flavors and aromas of autumn with a soul warming, blackstrap molasses laced finish that can only be achieved through months of maturation in Caribbean dark rum barrels. Pleasantly mellow up front with a crescendo of pumpkin pie spice giving way to subtly sweet, lingering brown sugar and spiced rum notes, this beer might just bring new meaning to Thanksgiving.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. 2022 edition, had 5/17/23.

Pours a mostly clear light orange, with a half inch quickly dissipating head and a little light foamy lacing. Aromas of pumpkin pie spices, pumpkin, rum, brown sugar, some caramel, light malt. Flavors of pumpkin, pumpkin pie spices, brown sugar, some rum and caramel, a little malt. Smooth, a thinner lighter body, appropriately carbonated.

It’s not bad. The spices are good, the pumpkin isn’t overly earthy, the barrels are more timid than they need to be. The thinness is an issue, as is the lack of overall intensity. Worth a try, but probably won’t come back to it.

12oz bottle poured into a goblet

A- pours a clear amber color with a one-finger foamy off-white head that reduces to a ring

S- nutmeg and clove lead that way on the nose, followed by some molasses and brown sugar. A bit of a vegetal note, along with vanilla close it out

T- sweet and malty up front with notes of caramel and brown sugar, followed by some spice notes of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon. The finish gives some rummy sweetness that adds some molasses, lingers of spice and caramel

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly creamy finish

Slightly cloudy golden-orange, white head that dissipates fairly quickly, spots of lace
Green banana, fresh apricot, some clove and other sweet spices, a little bit of rum aroma
Heavy on the spice, both the pumpkin spice and the pepper and clove phenolics, low fruitiness, a bit of winter squash sweet/earthy flavor, and a bit of warming burnt sugar from the rum barrel
Pretty light given the ABV, which it hides well. Could stand to be more effervescent.
Not something I'd drink regularly, but splitting a bottle with the missus while handing out candy was nice.

Retasting 11/23/2023
After two years, still cloudy. Spice has calmed down, and a bit of a lactic character has developed.

Strange beer that ultimately disappointed. This years version is 12.3 abv, mostly hidden. The stubby bottle is strangely hard to open (had to try a few different openers until
I found one that would accommodate the odd angle). When you hear rum and pumpkin you think a sweeter beer with warming and seasonal spices and that burnt sugar/sugar cane rum thing, but this for me is a farmhouse beer, as stated on the label, first and foremost. Lots of phenolics and yeasty notes in both the aroma and tasting; as the beer warms you get more suggestions of pumpkin pie, but this almost approaches Belgian tripel territory. I was looking for a fuller, rounder feel but this is decidedly medium bodied and carbonated. I will consider closely as I work through the four pack but this confounded expectations, and not in the best way, for me.

Great smell and appearance. Packs a punch at 12.3% but doesn't overwhelm the full pumpkin taste. Best o all, from my hometown.
