Notes/Commercial Description:
Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a one finger white head that fades quickly to a thin ring with light lacing.

Aroma of light malt , Belgian yeast, hints of clove and pepper.

Taste of light bready malt, Belgian yeast, clove and herbal hops.

Mouth Feel is medium body, moderate carbonation, crisp slightly dry with a lingering bitter ending.

Overall this is a nice BPA, a good beer for Hardywwod, however, I would put this one in the middle of the pack of their fleet of beer.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #63 (Apr 2012):

LOOK: Clear golden yellow, thin wispy white lace

SMELL: Yeast, green banana skin, white pepper, gummy, orchard must

TASTE: Semi-crisp, red apple, mixed fruit-cup juice, herbal hop; medicinal, pithy, chalky, gummy, slightly astringent, peppercorn, cracker-like dry malt, salty, yeasty, oily hop, dry finish

Simple yet intricate, with yeast nuances ... perhaps too much so? That would be our only gripe with this beer. The yeast dominates. In fact, it's a yeast bomb. Some taming would push this beer into the exceptional range. Regardless, a good stab at an Abbey-style Blonde Ale.

Appearance: orangey gold with thin white fizzy head, great clarity

Aroma: Belgian yeast, pale malt biscuity ness, slight pear and orange effervescence, hint of peppery phenols

Taste: similar to aroma, nice medium finish of crispy effervescence and fruity tinges, great flavor for a flagship beer

Mouthfeel. Medium body, effervescent but not in same level as most other Belgian style ales

Overall Impression: A great selection for a bitingly tasty drink with ample thirst quenching ability. Displaying typical Belgian pear/orange flavor with Belgian yeast but with more of a sturdy pale malt backbone. Would definitely suggest this beer to others.

Poured a light gold color and was somewhat hazy, one finger of white head didn't stick around too long.
It has that typical Belgian smell that I love with some banana and apple.
Taste followed the smell with the banana and some apple but also had a mild spice to it, very nice.
The mouthfeel was thin with a good deal of carbonation.
Overall I was very impressed and look toward to more from hardywood park.

A finger of fluffy white head which laces nicely and retains a little island of foam (partially due to the nucleation pattern in my Kishimoto Duvel tulip). Pale straw body.

Nose is an almost metallic dose of coriander (and maybe hops); the yeast gets left behind. As it sits, traces of funk.

Body has as much coriander as the nose, but it works. Not as metallic as I feared, except a bit on the aftertaste. A fair amount of spice, yeastiness is definitely second fiddle here, though it makes an appearance around the middle of the taste. The beginning has a bit of malt, I think, but it's gone pretty quick.

Mouthfeel is a bit prickly/coarse.

I agree with the BA categorization of this as a BPA; somehow 'Singel' isn't consistent with what I imagine in terms of taste, nor alcohol content. It's not a 'B-IPA' though; if it were, I'm not sure I could forgive it, but pardon my digression, that's a dogmatic debate. Any hop character is in the finish. A good first effort for a new brewery; I'm curious to see how this recipe develops, and to try other brews by Hardywood.
