Notes/Commercial Description:
Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

A - Pours a brilliant golden hue with a one-finger white head that dissipates rather quickly. Barely any lacing. Somewhat cloudy consistency but the color is truly something to behold. 4.5

S - Smells of apricot, pear, bergamot and plum along with malt and a bit of hops. Overall, even though it's a bit faint it smells delicious. 4.0

T - The taste is hard to describe but is wonderful. It's a mixture of sweet maltiness and bitter hops at the back of the tongue. Begins with a characteristic Belgian Pale Ale flavor (slightly sweet with a bitter aftertaste) yielding hints of lemon, citrus, and pear. Then hoppy finish is great and leaves you craving another sip immediately after. 4.5.

M - Feels pretty good overall. Smooth consistency and slightly tingly, only mild amount of carbonation but it's just the right amount for this type of beer. 4.0.

Overall, I'm very, VERY impressed with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery so far. Their Singel is a great beer and their Farmhouse Pumpkin is a wonderful example of what a pumpkin ale should strive to be. I'd give the Singel a 4.5 out of 5 overall, and I hope that people give Hardywood a try in the near future!

From 03/29/14 notes. On tap at Fireworks in Arlington, VA.

a - Pours a pale yellow color with one inch of slightly off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of spices, mint, bananas, cloves, yeast, bready malts, light pepper, and light floral notes. Nice nose, little too much pepper.

t - Tastes of sweet bananas, fruity malts, apples, spices, cloves, light pepper, floral notes, mint. Taste is better than the nose, sweeter and more fruits.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty good Belgian. Nice bananas and spices throughout, and easy to drink. Worth checking out.

On draft at Whole Foods in Alexandria, VA.

The beer is clear and golden with a small white head. the aroma brings Belgian yeast, light spice, a hint of alcohol. Simple and easy drinking. Not too sweet. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. A nice American representation of an abbey single. A few small tweaks and they could be onto something.

A: pours translucent yellow, sort of like an American lager, unfiltered
S: to me, this was the most appealing part of the beer and hinted at promise. Yeasty to sour, reminds me of sourdough bread a bit. Also seems very Belgian almost tending towards a sour
T/M: starts just a bit on the tart side, but fades too quickly into tasting like an imported pilsner. As such, it's an okay beer. I must admit I have not had many singles, so it might be on par with the style. However I liked the smell a lot, and the taste didn't meet my anticipation.
O: I wish this tasted a bit more like the nose, which was quite interesting. It turns out to me to be a decent replacement for an imported lager.

Pours a clear yellow. The noticeable yeast on this is pretty high and there is also quite a strong bit of lemon going on as well. This comes across as something that isn't typical for the style. But it does have a smooth feel on it and it's easy to drink. Not too bad really
