Notes/Commercial Description:
Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

bomber from the Caboose, Ashland - nice label

a: medium gold with a moderate haze, tight white head, low retention

s: pale malt, clean grape and apple with some citrus and tropical nuance - cooked pineapple, delicate spice, citrusy hops bring a fresh counterpoint, yeast, a touch of bubblegum

m: carbonation a higher moderate, light-medium in body

t: clean pale malts with fruity sugar notes of apple and grape, fresh and bright but with an underlying touch of malt sugar, some citrusy hop notes with a clean moderate bitterness, grassy, nice yeast flavors

o: a solid singel style ale, the malts are a little prominent for my liking and leave kind of a toasty/grainy feel, but a nice drink nonetheless

Poured on tap at Meridian Pint DC. From notes.

Pale golden color, very crystal clear, looks more like a decent lager. Thin white collar presented with a nice fluffy white top.

Nose is indistinguishable. I get nothing. nada. zip. zilch, bupkis, I am reaching here, but really nothing. Anything off putting or offensive or faulty, nope, but nothing that makes me want to think I am enjoying a beer here.

Palate comes out considerably better. Mild floral tones and a nice honey softness on the palate. Some of the classic mild candi like Belgian sugars come out a bit but not much. Moderate carbonation. I am straining to find anything distinct about this even for a simple Belgian Pale, and it's tough.

Overall, this is taste wise an ok example with out any problems, but it's really indistinct and nothing to get excited over, I'd rather have something with a bit more flavor, even if it is just a Belgian Pal Ale.

Appearance: A meringue of a head mushrooms on top of the cloudy amber liquid, leaving a lace curtain behind on the tulip

Smell: Yeast forward aromatics, with pepper and coriander dominant; apple, pear and grape tones, underneath

Taste: The fruit flavors emerge first, with apple, pear and hint of vinous grape; by mid-palate, the pepper and coriander emerge and wind up dominating the finish though the fruit flavors linger underneath

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with high carbonation

Overall: Hardywood just goes from strength to strength in my book, mastering a broad range of styles; another fine brew that I could have mistaken for an Allagash or an Ommegang

look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance: orangey gold with thin white fizzy head, great clarity

Aroma: Belgian yeast, pale malt biscuity ness, slight pear and orange effervescence, hint of peppery phenols

Taste: similar to aroma, nice medium finish of crispy effervescence and fruity tinges, great flavor for a flagship beer

Mouthfeel. Medium body, effervescent but not in same level as most other Belgian style ales

Overall Impression: A great selection for a bitingly tasty drink with ample thirst quenching ability. Displaying typical Belgian pear/orange flavor with Belgian yeast but with more of a sturdy pale malt backbone. Would definitely suggest this beer to others.
