Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. No obvious freshness date. Single singel purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Clear golden with soft, foamy 1-finger white head with decent retention and a few spots of lace.

S: Mostly grainy pale pilsner malt, a little bit of pear and golden apples matched with herbal, spicy floral hops. Peppery yeast ester, spicy and lightly citrus.

T: Big bold flavor for what is usually a ho-hum style. Big lemon pepper bite up front balanced with a honeyish pilsner malt sweetness through the mid-palate. The nose does not let on to the fruitiness of this ale, a lot of pear, orange, and tart apple, pineapple, more phenols when cold, decreasing in bitterness as it warms, and leaving a moderately bitter, herbal-floral finish.

M: Finishes nice and dry with light body and high carbonation, on point for all parts of the feel on this beer.

O: This beer really surprised me -- I had not liked their pale ale or cream ale too much, but this was one fine beer. Reminds me of a saison a lot, a little less estery though. A very interesting yeast character with a solid, spot-on pilsner maltiness dominating but accented with moderately peppery phenolics without overdoing it and nailing the feel. Great work on this one and I will be looking to buy more in the future.
