Brewed in the style of the farmhouse ales of Belgium's southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin utilizes a blend of rye, wheat and barley in the grain bill, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar clove and whole allspice harmonize with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root.
A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike and from the Village Garden. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

From a bottle into a draught glass. Pour had floofy head of beige with a relatively hazy pale golden amber body. Scent comes across as saison up front (good!) with notes of pumpkin and spice rounding out the back ... an interesting set of smells for a saison. Taste is exceptional, blending just a bit of bite from the saison with a delightfully smooth pumpkin that finishes with notes of spices added in (clove and ginger are most evident). Feel is smooth (can says soft and that feels right) with a lingering aftertaste that is just a touch bitter but rounded out by the pumpkin and spice notes. Overall a fascinating saison and a great fall beer that differs from the usual pumpkin lager or ales.

This is more of a Belgian than a pumpkin ale. Got to respect it for what it is, and it’s a Belgian with a hint of cinnamon overtones. Typical Belgian bubblegummy flavor. Almost no head and slightly sour smell. . Not what I was expecting but still an enjoyable beer.

Pours a clear amber color, minimal head. Has a really nice pumpkin pie spice aroma, I bet the clove and cinnamon the most. Has a good pumpkin flavor, I get the clove and cinnamon along with allspice and pumpkin purée. Really nice brown sugar flavor. Good carbonation, fairly medium bodied, seems to have an amber ale base. Overall a very tasty pumpkin beer.

Not terrible but I was pretty disappointed with this one from Hardywood. I've had pumpkin beers that I've enjoyed before but this one wasn't it. I can't quite put my finger on it but it just didn't taste right at all.

Pours without much head at all. Smells of hops and pumpkin. Very clear orange color. Tastes of pumpkin up front with hops after. Too hoppy for me, not something I would buy again.

Red-brown color with a thin beige head. Aromas of grass, yeast, and spice. Notes of cinnamon and other spices appear, but a bit delayed. Funky Belgian quality throughout. Alcoholic, slightly sweet note on the finish. Moderate level of carbonation. Interesting marriage of the Belgian style with the ubiquitous pumpkin ale.

Look: Orange Bronze, Not too dark.
Smell: Light Spices, Notes of Pumpkin and ginger.
Taste: Light notes of pumpkin and spice. Not too sweet. You can taste the alcohol, but it's not overwhelming.
Feel: Surprisingly light for a strong beer.
