Notes/Commercial Description:
Hardywood Bourbon DIPA is hopped with a heavy dose of Columbus, Cascade and Summit hops, fermented with an abbey ale yeast that imparts some subtle tropical fruit and peppery notes and conditioned twelve weeks in freshly emptied Virginia bourbon barrels from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA.

On tap
Pours a nice amber color, clear, with no sustaining head (lacked attention, but by time I looked, barely a few bubbles on side). A swirl brings a token amount of bubbles to the top.

The smell is bourbon and wood, almost equal amounts, and a honey-sweetness.

Initial taste is a light raw sugar sweetness right before the bourbon tastes take over. The bourbon lingers, but the bulk of the taste turns woody, including a slow drying sensation. The alcohol dies not burn, the taste of bourbon definitely lacks any feel of it. Despite the lower carbonation, it seems the bourbon provides a bit of bite to add a bit of feel.

I get the bourbon barrel aged part, but missing a bit on the IPA side, perhaps. It's a nice bourbon barrel ale, a bit dry, and maybe I am missing something in the balance (which I try to applaud in most beers, to debateable success), but the beer seems a bit pedestrian. Even writing that seems harsher than intended. I will say that the price relative to other beers seemed unjustified, but if I ignored that, I would grab this again in the right situation.

Poured from the bottle into a globe glass. 2014 release.

Big copper red and orange body, with a nice peach orange hue to it. Head is fluffy and creamy with a vanilla yellow ice cream looking color. This bubbles in consistency some speckled lacing.

Boozy aging, hints of thick oak and caramel. A bit of brown sugar syrup thickness, and odd mix of butter and fruit. Hops not so much, but smells like a barrel aged IPA.

Palate is of course what I expect in this mish mash. Oaked caramel that is buttery. Strange indistinct hop bitterness with a clashing tannic wood. Very numbing tannic palate, almost novocaine dryness. Faint orange light juice comes out a bit, through an interesting but slightly watery palate.

So aside from the fact it comes off like a clashing mess, where is the Belgian character in this? Neither hop driven, nor even very well complimentary barrel forgiving. This just doesn't work.
