Good beer. Here goes:

A: Extremely dark body, huge brown head. Doesn't leave much lacing, though.

S: Coffee and lactose sugar. Good but rather simple. Pretty creamy, though, which is how I prefer stouts.

T: Pretty complex. Initial tastes of coffee and lactose sugar succeeded by raisins and plums at the back of the palate. Good.

F: Thick and creamy. Good.

O: A good beer. Would prefer it if it didn't have the dark fruit taste, however. (455 characters)

Corked and caged 750ml into a tulip. The brew looks black in color with brown arouns the edges and a khaki head.

The smell is roasty with chocolate and slight citrus earthy noted blending back to more coffee appeal.

The taste is fruity raison, alcohol and coffee blending to more roasted earthen aspects blending with a bit of citrus hops to balance.

This is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. A warming brew that is well done. Just enough coffee to be nuanced and doesnt dominate the base. (499 characters)

On tap at brewery:
Have had this before a couple years back, and don't recall being impressed. Tried BBA version recently and enjoyed, so figure a retry of the base was in order.

Pours dark brown on edge of if not over into black. Head is tan and sat nicely stop my pour. Significant head remained a few sips in, some big bubbles amidst a foamy sea. Nose is rich coffee and chocolate, dark roast, semi-sweet chocolate, but combined leaning a bit towards a sweeter scent.

Taste starts more chocolatey, like hot chocolate, even. Or, on a different sip, a bit like a iced mocha coffee. This has the feel and taste of a milk stout, to me, smooth and silky, but just a tad thin. The lingering taste does sit somewhat oily on the palate, with the extends tastes left behind being a bit more coffee in nature.

I'm not sure what I was thinking before, or if Hardywood stepped up its game I this one, or if being "fresh" from the brewery helps, but this is a good beer. It's a little one-dimensional and not as thick as I've felt, if I had to offer criticisms. It is also on the sweeter side of the stout spectrum, so be aware. Glad I reconsidered this beer. (1,162 characters)

This was an exceptionally well balanced RIS. Surprised it doesn't have higher ratings. Nonetheless, it has everything I look for in a RIS, specifically the thick, sweet mouth feel. The coffee is perfectly brought out in the aftertaste. (235 characters)

Excellent coffee stout- enjoyed while preparing Easter dinner. Smell is fantastic, taste doesn't quite match the nose in intensity. ABV well hidden.. (153 characters)

More coffee than "Imperial Russian" flavor (if there is such a thing... I'm using Old Rasputin as a reference here). This beer reminds me very much of a chicory stout I've had in the past... Can't remember the name. The 9% ish ABV along with a few other beers has me struggling. It's roasty, dry, and quite delicious. The mouthfeel isn't as thick as you'd expect a Russian imperial to be, but it's got more viscosity than a standard coffee stout. I usually find one or two heavy stouts to be enough for the night, but this one has that chicory-esque flavor that makes me thirst for more the way a good IPA does. So there's that. A nice well balanced coffee stout. Slightly sweet and you can pickup the blueberry if you really focus. Starts out thin, but really coats the tongue well and lingers. (166 characters)

A hard pour into the bottom of my glass resulted in a nice tan 5 finger head. Black, with nary a trace of highlight. Almost no lacing.

Aroma, not surprisingly, is of coffee with a hint of dark chocolate and dark fruits in the background.

The taste is rather sweet for a stout. Dark roast coffee and bitter roast malt. Slightly acidic, almost tart. A hint of fruit, but I don't really get any blueberry.

Medium full in body. Light to moderate stickiness. slightly warming, and a bit drying.

Overall, animpressive brew. Well balanced with plenty of coffee and a hint of fruit. Great body. Smooth. The alcohol is well hidden.

Poured a black body with one finger tan head that left a minor lace ring down glass. Aroma is slight blueberry with moderate roasted coffee bean and is not overpowering.
OVerall, the body is smooth, slightly sticky sometimes, has a mild coffee profile that is a dry, roasted feel and the blueberry flavor does come out a little. ABV is well-hidden considering how mild this beer is. I like my coffee/"RI" stouts a little milder than is considered the norm so I liked this beer. Somewhat simplistic but overall an enjoyable beer to sip. (540 characters)

Poured from a 750ml brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. 2015 release. Purchased from Wine Warehouse (Charlottesvile, VA).

A: Pitch black ith chestnut edges with 1 finger of brownie batter head, frothy, but with quick recession and no lacing to speak of.

S: Wonderful balance of sweetish coffee with fig, date, caramel, and light roast character. The coffee and the roast don't compete like in many coffee stouts and RIS -- instead they work together well because a less bitter, sweeter coffee varietal was used. Note to self...

T: Flavor is also a delicious somewhat sweet sided stout - fudge and caramel coated in freshly crushed sweet, berryish coffee beans. There are a few gooier fruit flavors like fig and date, but mostly there is a fair amount of dark chocolate/cocoa that's covered up in the aroma that comes through with a light-medium coffee note that doesn't overpower or annoy -- instead it accents beautifully. Moderately bitter from roast malt notes, coffee, and some presumed hop bitterness.

M: I think the feel suffers from a bit of overcarbonation -- less pep would allow a more lush body, which would work well I think. Ratchet that down about 0.5 volumes, and the body would improve a lot.

O: This is my favorite one of Hardywood's stout, yes better than Gingerbread and Christmas morning. THe balance is there and, I'll admit, spice in beer is not my thing. Coffee on the other hand is another matter.... Delicious beer and glad I bought two! (1,471 characters)

2015 batch is much much better than 2014. Coffee notes are much more balanced and has a stronger nose to it. Mouth feel may be a hint too light... Maybe because of high carbonation. Again, 2015 is much much better than 14. (222 characters)

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into my Selkirk Abbey tulip.

Appearance: almost totally black with just hints of brown around the edges when held up to the light. Head is two fingers of frothy tan foam which dissipate slowly leaving a nice lace on the glass. Quite attractive.

Smell: very bready malt aroma with hints of rye, plus a pretty strong caramel and toffee character. Not a lot of coffee here, so it's not what I was expecting, but it's not bad nonetheless.

Taste: lightly sweet malt with more of that caramel-and-rye character. Coffee is present here, but it is quite subdued -- though it seems to pop up a bit in the aftertaste I would call this an American imperial stout long before I'd call this a RIS, but -- a tasty beer it is anyway.

Mouthfeel: big body with an OK carbonation. Texture is smooth but creaminess is kind of rocky. Not bad.

Overall: this beer is far from perfect, but it is quite tasty and the brewer has used a subtle hand when it comes to the coffee addition -- in a good way. This beer's definitely worth a try. (1,058 characters)

Corked and caged 750mL bottle from ThatCracker (thanks man!). 2014 release. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep, near-black brown with three fingers of fluffy tan froth. The head recedes slowly to a thin cap and healthy halo that laces nicely.

An almost astringent blueberry aroma leads before opening up to reveal bakers cocoa, faint creamed coffee, a little roasted malt and some cooked sugars.

Hmm. Not quite sure what's going on in the taste. That same strange blueberry note that I detected in the nose is also initially prevalent in the flavor. Ultimately the taste follows the nose to a fault- bittersweet bakers cocoa, thin creamed coffee, roasted dark grains, burnt caramel, dark fruit skins and a little booze. Not outright bad but leaves me craving a coffee stout.

Creamy, medium full body with carbonation that comes accross as a bizarre blend of too sharp on the attack yet too dull as it settles on the tongue. Finshes bitter with burnt coffee and dark chocolate.

I'm guessing that Sidamo coffee just isn't my thing. I know that Hardywood Park can make a killer stout but the aroma and flavors here didn't line up with my preferences. Further inspection of the bottle reveals that Ethiopian Sidamo coffee does have "distinctive blueberry undertones" if they are to be believed so I guess I wasn't crazy to detect it. Interesting but ultimately well under standards for both the brewery and the style. (1,421 characters)

A: This poured a nearly opaque dark mahogany with some tan head.
S: It smelled like roasted coffee and rich milk chocolate, with a little citrus.
T: It tasted like bitter coffee with some citrus zest, and a little dark chocolate. It had a clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was somewhat thick with a little carbonation. Nice slick body.
D: This was a decent stout with good coffee character, but not a lot of depth or complexity. The body was decent and the finish was smooth, with well hidden alcohol. So it was fairly easy to drink. Nice to try, but nothing too special. (568 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass from vintage 2014 release.

Out of the bottle pours a real smooth chestnut brown, hitting the glass and filling a deep dark mahogany brown. Very thin creamy light cocoa brown head is formed, which falls to an even thin puck, and matching soft collar of thin bubbles. Pretty nice looking stout.

Bouquet is kind of ordinary. Some soft roasted grains, a faint hint of acid and sourness. Not really getting any coffee or ripping bean action on this at all. Faint hint of fruit going on which might make sense with the Ethiopian angle.

Palate comes with a light fruit quality. Bit of a wet and tonic water carbonated palate a bit, with not much coating. Roasted quality is taken backseat by a soft acidic fruit character and matching sourness detected on the nose in the finish. A bit wet. Some piping warmth heat from the alcohol which works with the coffee nicely, but not too boozy.

Overall not too bad, I often do like the fruity character of some Ethiopian coffees, but I think in this style it comes off hinting at a bit acrid grain sensing, taking my enjoyment out of it just a little bit. Otherwise it's nice. (1,160 characters)

Sampled from a 750ml bottle in a DFH snifter. No date but 2014 release. Started about 60F. Thanks surge1311!

A - Black with no light and a big tan head.

S - Dark chocolate, coffee and brown sugar with hints of vanilla. The coffee was milder than I expected.

T - Cocoa, coffee and brown sugar. Slightly sweet with a somewhat dessert feel to it. the coffee again was more subdued than I expected. Very faint and almost absent roasted notes. Good harmony among the flavors. The alcohol is well hidden.

M - Creamy with a low carbonation.

O - An interesting beer and well worth a try. (584 characters)

Received in a trade, poured into a tulip.

A - Poured a nice almost black hue with a two finger mocha head that fades to leave light side lacing and a thin blanket.

S - Aromas of light dark fruits, sweeter malts, nice coffee beans.

T - Taste is on the sweeter side, sweeter dark fruits, very light on the roast, faint chocolate, nice coffee beans. Really wishing there was more roast here.

M - Mouthfeel is nice for the style, smooth though crispy carbonated. Very easy drinking.

O - Overall this beer was interesting. Loads of sweeter dark fruits. Coffee was nice. (569 characters)

2013 release

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a frothy tan cap that does an adequate job in the lacing department

Smell: Blueberry, with a strong coffee undertone or maybe coffee, with a strong blueberry undertone - take your pick

Taste: Coffee, chocolate and blueberry, all wrapped together, with roasty elements building in the middle; after the swallow, some cinnamon emerges, bringing just a touch of heat; chocolate and blueberry linger in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: An interesting beer, but I think the blueberry elements of Ethiopian coffee beans are a distraction and, in the end, I wish that aspect of the beer was dialed back (or a different coffee bean without a blueberry character was used); I appreciate the effort but as a coffee stout I prefer others (824 characters)

Split with my wife immediately after nailing my Air Force fitness test. Served in a Game of Thrones snifter.

A: Poured dark, not too thick or oil (which was surprising), and with only a hint of a mocha head that lingered for a while.

S: Moderately potent mocha buttercream flair, without any sort of an intense coffee ground quality. Think Starbucks Chocolate Mocha.

T: Signature Russian Imperial Stout profile: Cocoa-cinnamon mix with lots and lots of molasses. The coffee really hits on the finish.

M: Nice bitter slap on the end, not too sweet, and with a slight bit of lacing left on the glass.

O: My first Hardywood beer. It didn't disappoint. (653 characters)

A-dark brown black color with a smallish tan head and minimal lacing

S-roasted malt with a very very light coffee smell

T-dark roasted malt, and light coffee taste with a tinge of alcohol on the end. coffee in the aftertaste but overall i got very little from this beer. disappointing

F-medium body with light to medium carbonation smooth very creamy

O- an ok stout but not at all impressive very disappointed in this beer as there are much better examples of this style on the market.

Bottle purchased in Sep 2013. Served in Hardywood GBS stem glass.
A - very dark brown with tan head, diminishes after a few minutes.
S - berries and stone fruit (cherries) faint but unmistakable. a little surprised I picked this up, then read the label about the Ethiopian sidamo coffee bean and what it brings to aroma and flavor. Masterful!
T - fruit notes and sweetness up front, then coffee bitterness, but rounded out with caramel and mild booziness. A distinctive, delicious Russian imperial stout.
M - balanced- definitely not thin, but not overly thick or chewy. Perfect consistency for a stout, but definitely a sipping beer.
O - this one surprised me. I was expecting a typical coffee stout and the berry notes threw me a pleasant curve. I'm looking to buy more of these. (781 characters)

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a dark brown, opaque, with three fingers of creamy light brown head. Head leaves some sticky lacing as it dissipated to half a finger that stuck around for a bit.

Nose is medium roasted drip coffee, fruity cherry and plum with some astringent dark roasted malt.

Coffee forward on the taste, fruity medium roast, semi sweet chocolate. Not as much astringency in the taste as on the nose from darkly roasted malt. Medium finish with a touch of lingering coffee flavors.

Medium body, mild carbonation. More smooth in taste as the beer warmed up, allowing it to be more enjoyable. (624 characters)

750ml corked and caged bottle (2013 release) poured into an Idle Hands tulip.

A - Pours a near black in the glass with a dense, coffee ice cream colored, almost Guinness draught-like head of three fingers that shows excellent staying power. Foamy and thick, the head takes several minutes to fall to the surface and leaves behind foamy webs of lacing that nearly cover the entire surface of the glass.

S - Slightly astringent, noticeable berry-like fruitiness, slightly metallic, lightly alcoholic, roasted malts, a bit earthy, nice coffee bitterness/roastiness. A little bit odd in a way that I can't quite identify - I think the metallic notes and prominent berry aromas are the cause however.

T - Similar to the aroma...noticeable astringency that seems a bit off - maybe early sign of infection, but not sure. Metallic, berry flavors, burnt/acidic/astringent malts, black coffee. A bit smoky and leathery.

M - Medium body with a finely bubbled medium carbonation. Strong berry flavors and acidic/astringent notes are a bit overpowering and block out some of the roasty nuance.

O - This one isn't really working for me that well. I had high hopes and expectations for this one and really wanted to like this more. Coffee is muddled behind some burnt malt notes and a huge berry character. Acidity and a metallic quality also don't do this any favors. All of these things are fighting against each other and don't allow anything to shine thru. A bit of a disappointment. (1,477 characters)

2013 vintage.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slight coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and subdued earthy coffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the coffee seems to be fairly subdued in both the aroma and flavor. (657 characters)
