2016 Release

Appearance - Pours dark, cola brown with a tinge of ruby when held to light. The head is cocoa powder in color and peaks just over a finger's width. Fair retention, breaking down to a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface. Not much for lacing, save a few small spots left on their lonesome.

Smell - Fudgy aroma with notes of coffee and sweet bourbon character, namely vanilla and a touch of oak.

Taste - Fair flavor profile; kinda dies on the tongue. Milk chocolate upfront, then notes of coffee saturated with creamer. Distant bourbony vanilla, with ghostly traces of oak. The finish is mostly cream and chocolate with light, tingly berry tartness a slight boozy warmth.

Mouthfeel - Goes hand-in-hand with the flavor; near full in body with a mostly flat level of carbonation. Smooth and slightly creamy, but there's no life here. Thins out in the finish.

Overall - I've been pretty spoiled with all the rich, amazing BA Impys produced out here on the West Coast. Between Abyss, Parabola, Drake's BA Drakonic and a slew of others, we've got it good. I was excited to try this, but ultimately disappointed with how average it was. It's not bad, but there's a lot left to be desired here.

Pours a darkish brown with a nice light tannish head. you can smell the coffee and for sure the bourbon. Taste of coffee you get initially, then the bourbon gets you on the finish. I love the coffee that is used for this brew. I may have to get my wife to purchase some on her next business trip to Richmond. Another winner from Hardywood!!

Corked&Caged 750ml- 2013 vintage

Pours very dark brown with a creamy, light tan head. The coffee is surely somewhat faded but still very nice and the bourbon is mellow and smooth. No heat, just a great meld of flavor. Although I haven't had this one fresh, I can still say that time in the bottle has done it well.

I am in love with the coffee that Hardywood uses for their coffee stouts. I prefer the coffee flavor in Hardywood beers over the coffee flavor in KBS, SMS, and BCBCS. This is no exception.

2016 Vintage. Love the coffee roaster Hardywood uses. Always comes off quite beautifully. Cocoa, hints of vanilla, dark berry from the coffee beans, don't get much from the barrel. Body detracts from this beer. Has a creaminess but is very light, with not much heft. Still a wonderful coffee stout.

2016 edition.Pours into a goblet a deep garnet hued dark chocolate with a creamy deep beige head atop.Dark roast coffee over top of mild bourbon/vanilla notes,not in your face by any means wich is a good thing for me.A smooth and sticky feel is spot on for a beer of this style and strength.A mix of mellow bourbon barrel and deep coffee roast makes for an appetizing palate,throw in some bitter chocolate and alcohol dipped dark fruit and you have a top notch beer.To me this beer is underrated and by a good measure....this beer is fantastic!

On tap at the brewery. Looks luscious and enticing, but it goes down from there. Very faint aroma, some cold-brew coffee in the taste, along with roasted malts... but no bourbon. Drinkable, but disappointing.

Fresh bottle from 2016 release

Look is mahogany with creamy tan head. Couple fingers on the pour that settle down to a thick tight-bubbled ring. Eventually disappears, no lacing.

Smell of bourbon booze up front with light notes of coffee and vanilla.

Taste is coffee forward, slightly bitter, dark chocolate flavors come in and then the bourbon finishes it off. Well balanced barrel aged stout, nothing too overwhelming and there's time to pick up and enjoy all of the layers.

Feel is excellent, full body, slightly oily. Not much carbonation.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this. Its my first beer from Hardywood and its really good. Its not Goose Island good, but it offers something different and more subtle.

750ml cork and cage. 2015 vintage. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours dark black body, half finger offwhite head, dies down quickly, thin collar, no lacing. Smells of cocoa and chocolate with a decent dose of coffee, milk chocolate, oak, smoky bourbon. Flavour is similar; smoky bourbon, dark coffee, not very acidic or roasty, but more of a generic coffee flavour profile, dark chocolate, cocoa, oak. Mouthfeel is fuller bodied, appropriate carbonation, a bit of smoky coffee on the finish. It's a solid bourbon coffee stout, certainly with a nice body, but overall not the most complex as I'd expect based on others.

Beautiful thick black color; slight tan head that dissipated quickly. Nose is equal parts coffee and bourbon. Taste is bitter dark roast coffee up front with a definite whiskey kick at the end, add a tad of unsweetened vanilla -- nice flavor linger. Mouth feel smooth with slight carbonation. Unlike some of the HW stouts, the high ABV here is obvious. While I prefer the GBS series,this is a robust, flavorful stout for those who have a taste for coffee in their brew.

Wow, really impressive this year. Pour was from a tap. Didn't see much of a head, just a thin caramel colored ring and a typical stout motor oil black. Smell hits you with a blast of bourbon and coffee. Taste and feel is rich, creamy, and chocolaty up front with a decent amount of bourbon flavor throughout. It's really sweet and has a honey flavor to it. The slight bitterness of the coffee from the base stout has been subdued with it's age in the barrels. Overall some really solid stuff. Downed the first glass in 5 minutes... I'll have another please.

i used to drink two starbucks coffees everyday before work. Now I'm just going to drink two of these before work.....and one at lunch. Hot Damn!

Pouring in a room temp pint glass, deep brown color with a frothy tan head, subsides quickly. Nose the coffee bean jumps out quickly and is very dominate. Mouthfeel is silky smooth with mild carbonation.

Here comes the taste. Its very sweet, with roasted chocolate and bitter coffee bean. The bottle claims blueberry but i don't get any of that. Finish is still sweet, heather honey notes and that coffee finish, If you see one of these in the store...get one of these.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter, the beer is jet black, with a foamy, light tan head. Nose of roast coffee, subtle chocolate, and woody highlights. Flavors are smooth roasted coffee forward, with undertones of chocolate, subtle berry highlights, and vanilla and wood spice. Very smooth and balanced, on a rich, solid, robust body. The aftertaste is heavily roasted coffee, with highlights of chocolate and berry fruits. Smooth, dry finish. Great beer.

I was anxious to try this beer. The description sounded wonderful, but the reviews were a bit low.

A. Dark, dark brown, near black. Poured a 1-finger head that was fine at the bottom and profiled to coarse at the top, decent retention. Very small spot laces left on the glass. Fairly thin.

S. Began with smoke, char, and dark roasted malts. As it opened it changed dramatically. The notes that came through were coffee beans, some vanilla extract, dark chocolate and milk chocolate.

T. After the initial nose, I was expected a char-dominated stout, which I find unappealing, but I found a very well balanced BA stout. There was a little char, but more from a roasted coffee bean. The barrel and bourbon are very noticeable - and very pleasant - as it nears room temp. Major notes of bourbon-soaked oak and dark malts are dominate with coffee in the middle and a little bourbon booze on the end. Minor notes of coffee beans, vanilla, coconut, and hazelnuts round it out.

M. Smooth (the booziness did not create a harsh bite), full body, moderate carbonation, a little sticky as it warms, moderately thin.

O. Was the coffee masked, no. I say the coffee was more balanced and accompanied the other flavor profiles you get from a well-crafted BA stout. Granted there are a ton of world-class BA stouts out there and more keep popping up everyday, but this is still underrated.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter.

A dark, thick looking pour, with no real head and some lacing. Smell gives a pretty good hit of bourbon, followed by roasted malts, chocolate, a little vanilla. Very nice aroma, but I'm not picking up any coffee. Taste also starts off with strong bourbon, but not overly boozy. Taste follows the nose on the roasted malts, chocolate and vanilla.... and a lack of coffee. Smooth, creamy, maybe a touch thin for the style and ABV.

I thought this was really good, but I truly got no coffee out of this. And Sidamo is not exactly bashful. Maybe flying (or the TSA) sucked the coffee out. However, looks like all the reviews I read fared better, so take my review lightly and give it a try. Marking down the taste a quarter....

Very chocolatey with a high end coffee roast. I get a creaminess that blends with the coffee very well before a woodsy, spicy, oakey barrel flavor settles in.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter, 2013 vintage

A- pours pitch black in color with a creamy two-finger khaki colored head that retains nicely after the pour, leaving some lacing behind

S- lots of dark fruit aroma up front with notes of fig, raisin & date. Toasted chocolate malt gives deep aroma of dark chocolate and caramel, the bourbon adds notes of barrel juice, smoked wood, oak barrel & vanilla. Coffee has faded by now, but still adds some earthy and herbal coffee notes

T- dark fruit flavors of fig & raisin up front are quickly complemented by a sharp woodsy bitterness that gives notes of bourbon, oak, vanilla and caramel. Whipping cream sweetness leads to a slightly bourbony finish with lingers of herbal and earthy coffee

M- medium viscous body with moderate low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel and a chewy slightly warming finish

O- this still tastes great even after a couple of years of aging

As expected, pours a deep dark black with outside edges of deep, deep brown. Minimal head, which leaves quickly. Very light lacing. Aroma is upfront with bourbon, then a bit of coffee and a touch of dark chocolate. Taste is a nice balance of chocolate, coffee and bourbon, blending quite well together. The high ABV tends to make the bourbon a little more prominent that I would like. This one is definitely a sipper. As it warms the alcohol lets itself be a little more known and the bourbon aftertaste a little more prominent. Mouthfeel has a touch of alcohol burn, but not too overpowering. Enjoy slowly and if it is a 750ml, share with a friend.......or two.....

Amazing mouthful. Beautiful opaque black color. Sweet coffee, more subdued chocolate, sweet. Large bottle to be shared, definitely a sipping beer. One of my favorites!

Poured a black body with one finger khaki head that died quick with no lace. Aroma of coffee, wood, booze, chocolate and touch of blueberry from the sidamo coffee bean (not nearly as prevelant as regular sidamo stout). Solid build and sturdy, the roasted coffee malts mix with some sweetness and the wood adds a boozy, vanilla, bourbon type feel. Smooth and full bodied, this is a pretty solid sipper.

Poured from a 5 L Growler into a tulip glass and got a lovely very dark chocolate brown with lacing (this is from the middle of growler, so most carbonation is gone). Enjoyable strong flavor that is easy to enjoy. Dangerous easy drinking powerful Stout! Beware!

Review from NBS post, 5/10:

I get a bittersweet chocolate scent from the beer. My girlfriend says "Coffee." I do get a bitter roasted note also, but not as strong as she does. I get a light hint of vanilla and neither of us gets a huge amount of bourbon. The taste does bring more bitter roasted notes than the smell, much more coffee-like. I actually laughed out loud as my GF found the exact opposite (although she did find the chocolate taste to be a dark or unsweetened chocolate taste, bitter in nature). The barrel flavored, both alcohol (also noticed by GF) and wood come out early and all combine to give a lingering taste. Feel is a tad thin early, but smooths out with some warmth to make up for it. The flavors are quite bold.

To be re-reviewed with future bottle.

Smooth, sultry and quite flirtatious with the tastebuds, the otherwise seducing flavors of wonderfully burnt sugar, creamy espresso and bittersweet chocolate coax out the lush in all of us; but woven into a cocoon of bourbon and the taste is nearly overwhelming.

Its ominously black pour intimidates the eye as a caldering simmer of creme rises from its depths. Quickly favoring brandy-type legging over lace or retention, its swirling ink unleashes sweet roast, smoky chocolate and coconut aromatics. Its seared toffee underlay easily supports the roast, oak and booze while offering the heartiness of black-strap molasses and maple.

Its roasty-sweet middle unfolds layer by layer, starting with the delicacy of brownie batter, over-cooked caramel, bittersweet chocolate and something in the fudge realm. As the sweetness slowly releases its grip, its dark roast coffee, light campfire, bittersweet morsels and grilled walnuts take hold and usher in a semi-sweet second half.

With its decadent sweetness resisting much fade, its booze-laden sweetnesses seep deeply into the tastebuds, delivering bourbon warmth, wood spice and smooth char to the senses. Thin fruit of coconut, cherry and vine are highlighted with the oaken caramel and vanilla taste that accompanies the roast in deep aftertaste and afterthought.
