Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Vintage 2014. Solid pop off the cork, but the cork is bubbling... this has me a little concerned.
A real nice creamy forming head, very light coffee and cocoa brown colored, with a creamy character to it. Settles very slowly on to a simple dark walnut black body, quite opaque and dark. Some leopard prints of lacing on the glass as well as some minor legs too. Quite nice looking.
Real nice bouquet and aromas. Good smelling raspberry fruit, bursting and nearly juicy. Hints of faint char but nicely balanced. Not overly sweet, and quite fresh sense smelling too. Smells literally like black forest cake in a glass with some nice chocolate which doesn't seem distinct enough between milk or dark. Delicious.
Palate though comes quite fizzy. Really takes the taste down quite a notch. Aftertaste is really lingering and not good, huge amounts of gaseous carbon dioxide and mineral soda water. Luckily with time and warmth it calms down. Mid palate has some nice fruit raspberry juice to it. Some charring noticeable roast, which makes for some nice aromatics with the tight carbonation. Missing lots of chocolate and malt roast depths though here, and has a watery cream character to it.
Still the beer manages to deliver. It hinted to me maybe being compromised but doesn't appear to be. Really missing some creamy mouthfeel and texture to bring it all together, but it's fruit angle is very fun and enjoyable.
