Notes/Commercial Description:
Late one stormy night at the brewery the lights went off and things got interesting. Ask a brewer and they'll swear up and down it was El Hopadillo Negro himself. Like his kin, El Hopadillo Negro craves bitterness, but has a bit of a dark streak. Suddenly...noises in the malt room, thuds in the hop cooler. The next morning it was bubbling away. Dark as night and laden with American hops, this brew has the tropical fruit and citrus flavors of an IPA with a rich, malty body. Don't be afraid of the dark...

Another quality offering from our friends at Karbach. Black IPA is a relatively new style here in Houston. I've been reading about it in Beer Magazines and was so very impressed to see it available from Karbach. Local beer is always nice...

This is actually the second bottle I've had. I didn't pour it this time. I just drank it from the bottle. This beer does pour a dark beautiful brown/black with a nice head. It smells beautiful and hoppy. Full of pine and grapefruit.

The taste is the winner here. Everything a great IPA is supposed to be. Full of bright pungent hop flavours. Clean, bright and surprisingly dry. BUT the silent superstar here is the malt. I normally don't like malty beer that much. Especially Euro malt beers. But the malt in this Black IPA is subtle, it flows in the background. Instead of fighting for attention, the malt compliments the hops. Balance???

Overall this is an outstanding brew. Only available in 24oz bottles here in Houston. I am going to start buying one to compliment my sixers and cases...

22 oz bottle of El Hopadillo Negro pours clear dark red-brown rather than black. The modest size beige head is durable and leaves fine lacing.

Aroma: Sweet with less hop aroma than expected.

Flavor: good integration of dark malts and hops for style; a style where these seem to clash more often than mesh.

O: a moestly above average Black IPA.

Real nice looking, big head and lots of lace, black as expected.

A very nice blend of hops and roasty malts, some earthy woods, crisp tangy hops, overall enjoyable and in the range of expectations for Karbach.

Body was medium with pretty good carbonation and a nice crisp hoppy finish. Karbach continues to impress me, so I keep buying their beer.

Appearance: Black glass shows thick ruby edges that extend to the core of the glass. Holds a dark foam cover that laces the glass in thick tide marks.

Smell: A bit grassy, a lot of dark roasted grain that goes a bit coffee, a bit earthy and leafy.

Taste: Hops come through the dark roasted background, again a bit grassy but some west coast citric hop notes as well. The hops aren't really up to an IPA level, and the black base is a bit light, but it makes for an easy drinking example of the style.

Mouthfeel: Goes a bit soapy in the mouth, frothy, a light medium body, lingering oily finish.

Overall: Not the monster portrayed on the label, more of a gentle, misunderstood woodland creature. A fine beer, nothing wrong (save maybe the soapy mouthfeel) and an enjoyable sipper.
